So here I am, jetting off to yet another sunny country. Don't you just hate me? It's a hard life being a language student, but someone's got to do it! I'm staying with a family in the south of Italy. In return for free accomodation and meals I help them around the house and garden for 5 hours a day. Not bad eh? The family are lovely, really friendly and great sense of humour. The food is divine, well it's Italy, what do you expect? The house is amazing, the kind of home people dream of moving abroad to. It's massive and has an outdoor swimming pool and trampoline. The weather is fantastic, in the 30s. I've only been here two days and already my body's back to Paraguayan hot and cold levels, as it was ... read more

We left Lorica today earlier than expected but we just need to adjust to changes in our intinerary. Lorica is high in the mountains and very green but also secluded. Like I said no Internet access. I wanted to mention the food at the hotel. Lorica is known for their mushrooms. They have an annual mushroom festival. Our spaghetti is just a tomatoe sause and we've added mushrooms for a change. They are wonderful. We've driven up and down the mountain several times and now realize it is no big deal to drive in the country. Our intentions were to have a picnic by the lake today but it was thundering and raining so that ruined the plans. In spite of this weather...we still didnt need a jacket and had the ac on in the car. ... read more

The cars we ve rented are miniature. Today we fit into a car similar to a Madza 3 but it was a Fiat. Four adults with two pieces of luggage each. No pick up and go in this car. It was the only rental available. Depending on how we rent the car, the cost vary. We rented a car for 75 euros for 24 hours and only allowed us the distance of 200 kilometers. 75 euros equates to approx. 115 American dollars. Gas is only 1.50 per litre. I think it is 4.5 litres makes a gallon or something like that. The gas stations have full service so we never have to get out of the car to get gas. Late one night we stopped at McDonalds. I got a Filet o Fish, fries and a ... read more

May 17 , 2008 Amantea, Italy We drove down from Sorrento to southern Italy and spent one night in a small beach town called Amantea on the south west coast. This is a very nice part of the country and is getting better known for the beaches and great weather. We had a nice hotel on the beach a little ways from the main town and enjoyed the peace and quiet and a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This would not be a hard place to come back to for a week or so. The drive is easy on very good roads ( a bit of construction but well managed ). You would not believe the number ( and length ) of the tunnels built through the mountains. It really is amazing and it really straightens ... read more

San Giorgio seemed more like a home after taking a vacation from it and returning. We had puppies that needed nurturing. We fed them milk and found shelter for them at night. When we first got them I put both of them in the pocket of a hood I wore, but they grew quickly. Francesco appeared one day with a man who took one of the pups home with him. Morgan cried at the way the pup that was left over searched for her sister. They were so small but at least they had had each other to keep warm. To our relief the man returned the pup the next day complaining that it whined at night and peed. Duh. The pups started out as a burden but they were soon our babies. We became defensive ... read more

Morgan and i took six hours of trains to Rome the day before Dad and Eddie were to arrive. We arrived in the afternoon and walked to our hostel(10.90/night) hotel Lodi. it was a 20 minute walk from Termini Station. We should have taken a bus but it was a nice day. The owner, Fabrizio, greeted us and showed us around. He also made us coffee and gave us grapefruit from the hotel's garden. We spent the afternoon and evening in the garden of hotel lodi talking to our Israeli roommate Rhan. He lives in paris with his fiancée writing books. We had a late dinner with Rhan in the middle of Rome. After visiting a few bars and getting lost we headed back to the hotel on foot. A few hours later I awoke and ... read more

I begin writing this account more than three months after our arrival. Sorry to those trying to keep up on what we are doing, but internet access is difficult to come by in our current situation. Because i am behind i will break our time up here into three parts: Part I - Arrival here to my father's visit Part II - My father's visit Part III - Our remaining time here in Calabria Giuseppe Riggio opened his home for us during the holidays. Noone else wanted to have wwoofers. We called him at the train stop before we reached Briatico and he told us that the previous farmer in Noto had told him that we were not coming until the next day, but our arrival in an hour would work out ok and that he ... read more

After a short 20 minute ferry ride, I was back on the Italian mainland in the boot tip. I rode through the Aspromonte National Park with its dark forest roads that reminded me a bit of Northern California. I later found out that this is where the Mafia goes to dispose of their dirty business. The road signs in this part of Italy are terrible and with me being a card carrying Luddite without a GPS, I was left to fend for myself. Eventually, I found my way and made it across the central mountain range to the southern side of the “toe”. In Bovalino, I find a decent hotel to stay for the night. ... read more

The anticipation started weeks ago, encouraged by planning meetings at our local pub. Now we (Joe, Andrew and Gerry) were in Aquapessa, Calabria, Southern Italy for a long weekend. Fantastic value at £99 each for 4 days (including return flight, 3 star hotel, and hire car). Gerry remarked that when he first flew to Italy 23 years ago the flight cost £150! Who would have believed it would have gone down so much? The flight went very well until we started to make our descent through the clouds into Lamezia. With a sudden wrench the plane jolted and Andrew nearly jumped out of his seat! Several more lurches from side to side had us all sweating and reciting our individual mantras/prayers/confessions. Our collective pleadings secured us a safe landing and we proceeded to our little Fiat ... read more
