September 22 & 23,2013 Miracle of miracle in this day and age: All of our forms of transport left and arrived more or less on time (and some were even early), and all connections were made. HOWEVER, it was a grueling 33 hours of being awake and negotiating the details of travel. For this reason we were delighted to find our B&B and its owners beyond amazing! But more on that later... We've decided to utilize a long standing Biagi/Ogden family tradition to structure this blog. Each of us will report a good thing and a bad thing for each day according to our perspective. And of course, we'll illustrate the posts with some selected photos. (Disclaimer: this plan assumes the spotty Internet access is available.) Sharon: BAD THING-- The sleepless for 33 hours ordeal. Breakfast of egg and toast and wonderful coffee on our balcony, watching our neighbor, nice lady, sweeping the alley below us. She waves but I don’t think we are communicating because she talks quickly to us but never says Bonjourno. We started the day with shopping at the hardware store. I needed some plate glass for a contact printer, clothes line, funnel, etc. On the way, we met a woman at the vegetable market who gave us some zucchini with flowers which we were admiring! At the store Martha found some great German paintbrushes, and I got most of my list. We bought our supplies, $11, and headed to the castle. I forgot the glass and had to return to the hardware store. I went a different way home and went by the mozzarella cheese factory ... read more

Geo: 40.357, 18.172East to Alberobella the center for viewing Tulli Houses which are conical and made of stone. We saw several historic ones in the countryside. The center of the town of Alberobella has a tourist site with many of the houses located on their original sites in the old town. Most are now tourist stores selling the usual stuff. The homes are interesting in their construction and it seems to be a design theme because we saw several newer homes in the countryside which were of typical construction but had Tulli 'tops". We then headed down the coast along the Adriatic coast towards Lecce. Along the way we stopped at a small beach where we had leftover pizza from last night and I tried the water but it is not very warm yet. Lecce is ... read more

Underground “Trappeti” Olive oil is a fundamental element of Lecce’s material culture and is symbolically represented by the undergroung oil mills or “trappeti” that abound in the area. There are several reasons for their being subterranean - firstly ,the far lower labour costs, since digging an oil mill underground was far cheaper than building it abouve ground. Furthermore, it was by far the mostconvenient solutionfor rapid processing and storage , since the olives were unloaded directly into the cells below throught openings in the vault of the trappeto. There were other reasons too. Since olive oil solidifies at a temperature of 6° C, it must be extracted and left to settle in a warm environment at an even temperature varying between 18 and 20 degreess. The trappeti ,heated not only by large lamps that burned day and ... read more

Salento - the magic of the sun Fragrances and flavours from a landscapes have been preserved intact for centuries Lecce, capital of Salento region and a supreme example of the Baroque style predominant in this area, has maintained its historical and cultural identity more than any other city in Puglia. Lecce dominates a vast and in some parts slightly undulating plain- a frontier land placed at the furthermost eastern tip of the peninsula and encircled by two sea , the Adriatic and the Ionian . The low , jagged coastline ,interrupted now and then by pine forests, suddenly gives way to immense expanse of red soil and bleak stony ground dotted with vines and olives trees- age old natural sentinels in counterpoint to the straight lines of the farm roads advancing across the plain ad far ... read more

SALENTO it's great to enjoy beautiful natural scenaries....all so quiet and relaxing. It's so enthrallig how nothing feels like home. Moving away from this place really uprooted me from my own earth. But even if London has always been my dream city, I couldn' t help but coming Home. The mild climate, our beautiful sandy beaches, our natural beauties. that's why I decided to write down a bit about this amazing land. There are many things to be seen. I live in a small town named Otranto or as it was called by the Greek Hydruntum. It has a huge castle on the sea, a beautiful cathedral with the biggest jigsaw in Europe and an amazing sea. There are 3 beautiful lake, the most interesting is "Red lake" with its red earth and green water. There ... read more

Now down on the heel of the boot in Italy. We have been in a region called Apuglia which is famous for these great conical shaped houses. The town of Alberabello is WH listed and has streets of them. We managed to find a trulli to stay in on the outskirts and it was great. The owners were very kind and took Roger and myself on a small tour of his property. We had to communicate in French which was a times challenging but we managed. It turned out the owner was an opthamologist whose family had owned the property for years. He now enjoyed running a small vineyard; selling the meat which had been raised on the farm via his basement cool rooom as well as having a chap come in and make cheese in ... read more
