Organic Farming with Lyndsey, Paul and Josh
Published: August 20th 2010Europe » Ireland » County Wexford » GoreyOn the way to our next farm we made a stop at Blarney, well known for Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone, which when kissed, gives the kisser the gift of eloquence. The story goes that when Queen Elizabeth I was requesting an oath of loyalty to occupy the lands she sent Sir George Carew to have talks with Lord Blarney. When he arrived in Blarney he was entertained, sweet talked but never given a commitment to the Queen. When he reported this to Queen Elizabeth all she could do was explode with frustration with “This is all blarney...what he says he never means!”. Hence the word “blarney”. The next farm we were working on belonged to Lyndsey, Paul and their son Josh (who was turning 5 soon and got on quite very well with Phoebe). ... read more
After breakfast, Evy and I headed over to the clubhouse to use the internet. We managed to set up a car rental in Scotland and contact a hostel in Inverness about staying there. As well, I got in touch with my Scottish friend David Noble (now living in Canada) about ideas for places to go. Back at home, we are trying to get Benjamin finished up with his school work (Joshua finished up last week) and so we don't have plans to go anywhere today. We have had to make the decision to stay here in Rosslare Harbour and leave for Dublin on Saturday and spend two nights in the hotel where we first stayed, exploring a bit of Dublin before flying out Monday morning. After lunch, we watched some of the Royal Ascott Races on ... read more
Visiting New Ross and the Dunbrody
Published: July 1st 2009Europe » Ireland » County Wexford » New RossWe got a later start today, having had a comfortable sleep in our this great place. After breakfast, Evy and I head up to the club house where we are able to get a internet access as they have wifi throughout the clubhouse. Unfortunately no one has responded to our inquiries for accommodation later in the week. When we get back, we have some lunch before getting in the car and heading off to the town of New Ross. The great grandfather of JFK came from New Ross, and there are signs indicating the connection as we got closer. The road took us along to the harbour and we quickly found the Dunbrody Famine Ship and parked across the street. The Dunbrody Famine Ship is a recreation of the type of ship that would have taken ... read more
Finding a place and a trip to the Irish Heritage Park
Published: July 1st 2009Europe » Ireland » County WexfordThe breakfast, which is included in our room, turns out to be quite substantial and we get to try new things like “Black Pudding”. After breakfast, we call the phone number given us by our landlord. His sister tell us that in fact, the place is not available tonight, but that her sister has a place in the same complex that might be available. As her sister is at work, she says she will call her. We check out of the hotel and head over to the local mall to buy a few things. Later, when I call her back, she tells us that her sister doesn't have her cell phone with her and we will have to phone her later in the day. Just in case she is not able to rent to us, she ... read more
With the wifi in our room still not working, I went down to the hotel business centre to use the computer this morning. One person with a unit to rent near Wexford had contacted me. The unit would be available and the price was good so I emailed back to say we would take it and to please send further details. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and afterwards, checked our email again. I hadn't heard back from the property owner yet, so I copied down the contact details and we packed and took the shuttle bus back to the airport. At the airport, we quickly found our car rental company. Despite booking the car online and getting a final price, it turns out the insurance is not included in the online quote. Not only ... read more
After our late night the evening before, we slept in a little to prepare for our day. We grabbed some free breakfast at the hotel and headed for the car. I think we circled the city 5 or 6 times trying to find the right way out of town to take the back roads . We headed for a small ferry a little outside of Waterford . The quick ferry ride was only about 20 minutes and before we knew it we were crossing country roads in County Wexford. We headed for Arklow which was recommended as a good place to stop over before continuing on the Wicklow mountains. Tara called in the favor again and we ended up booked into the Woodbridge hotel which is said to be the oldest hotel in Ireland. Once we ... read more
DAYS 29-31 Friday I spoke to my Uncle Alan who asked if I wanted to go to Wexford with them for the weekend which I did. Amy (my little cousin) didn't know I was coming so you should have heard the shrieks at the school gate when we picked her up. That night we played on the near by play equipment and realised that maybe I was a little too big to be playing on it! After a lovely dinner cooked by Uncle Alan it was movie time in Amy’s room we watched Cadet Kellie. This was done in semi darkness as the power had diminished leaving us with very dim lighting and only the little TV we were using working. After the movie was finished all the power went out and we were left with ... read more

Pembrokeshire National Park to Fish Guard Ferry, Wales to Rosslare, to Lady's Island, Ireland
Published: July 11th 2008Europe » Ireland » County WexfordPembrokeshire National Park to Fish Guard Ferry, Wales to Rosslare, to Lady's Island, Ireland The drive from St. David's to Fish Guard was not a long one, just tricky with the narrow country roads. What a wonderful surprise at the dock. We arrived early and the Stena Line Ferry Company was preparing decorations for the Fourth of July. They had flags and banners and even wore cowboy hats! We were the only Americans sitting in the ferry waiting line, and they were thrilled someone appreciated their efforts. With lots of time to kill, we took a walk up the Coastal Path to the town of Fish Guard. There is actually another town behind the hill... Lower Fish Guard. We wandered into the town and had a snack and started back down the hill to the dock ... read more
