Geo: 52.2594, -7.10697So today I went for a walk to explore Waterford on foot. It was pretty easy because there isn't much to see on a Sunday. It would appear Ireland is one of those quaint places that honours the old tradition, Sunday is a rest day. The first place I came across was Waterford Crystal. The company was first started in 1783. The owners set up camp in Waterford because Ireland had no tax on luxury items at the time. A tax was introduced in the 1850's and the owners shut up shop. It was re-opened by a couple of Czechs in the 1950's. Now I have seen the factory I understand why the crystal is so expensive. The production process is really hands on. To be a master-cuter at Waterford a person must apprentice ... read more

It came so quickly, my last day with my family in Ireland. We started our day at 8am when we got in the car and headed down N24 to Waterford. About halfway there, we took a slight detour to Cashel. We visited the Rock of Cashel, also known as St. Patrick’s Rock. The reason it got its name is because the Castle was built on a huge rock by the town of Cashel. There is a story that the devil was flying all around Ireland and took a bite out of a mountain a few miles from Cashel and dropped it where it lies today. On the tour of the Rock, I learned about all the buildings that are there: The Round Tower, the Cathedral, the Chapel, the Bishop’s living quarters, and the house of the ... read more

After a long week of University work and Corey working hard at his new job we decided it would be nice to head out of Cork for Saturday the 15th October. We hopped on the bus at 8.30 in the morning to Waterford after a quick stop at a coffee shop for some breakfast and some caffeine to wake us up. Once we arrived in Waterford (after the 2.5 hour bus trip) we ran through the rain to Waterford Crystal! We arrived just in time for the 11 o'clock tour. It was quiet exciting to see behind in the factory how they made these amazing crystal objects! The tour guide showed us each of the steps they used from heating the crystal glass to blowing the crystal to cutting and the crazy designs to how they ... read more

After another day full of train travel, this time adding another train connection at the train station across town from Dublin station. Riding right along the water gives you a striking first impression. Waterford is one beautiful city. Beautiful historic warehouses, that have since been turned into shops, line the water and are only blocks away from the pedestrian shopping center. One of those beautiful buildings was our hotel. Granville Hotel used to be the mansion of a wealthy Irish merchant family whose son later designed the modern Irish flag. We arrived, late in the evening, only to find out that where had been a mistake in our reservation. They thought that there was only 2 of us when we actually numbered 3. To correct their mistake we were given one of the penthouse suite that ... read more

KILLARNEY TO WATERFORD Today we headed across the bottom of Ireland from Killarney to Waterford (famous for its crystal) Our first visit was to Blarney Castle, from there we stopped off at Waterford Crystal for a factory tour and ended our night being entertained at a tiny Irish Pub in the small coastal town of Dunmore East. BLARNEY CASTLE We had the option of kissing the blarney stone and we thought why not! So we climbed up through Blarney Castle (another narrow spiral staircase), we had to be careful with our footing as the steps are authentic to when the castle was in its prime. – not smooth, very narrow and very steep. We climbed to the top of the castle (along with thousands of others – there was a constant stream from bottom to top ... read more

Finally at a B&B with good internet AND hot showers! I have posted some pictures from the past few days! Anyway, today was not a good day. As my loving boyfriend would say, "morale is low, press on." Driving around Ireland is stressful, to say the least. First, there is being comfortable with driving on the wrong side of the road. The driving part isn't the problem - the turning part is. It's challenging to make narrow left hand turns, and wide right hand turns. Throw in the fact that we spent 90% of the day lost, and the necessity of finding gas stations to ask for directions....not a good day. However, there were a few highlights - Powerscourt Gardens in Eniskerry (uploaded some pictures) - Waterford...home of Waterford Crystal I am sad that we missed ... read more

Day 35: Killarney Yesterday at Muckross let us in for a fair bit of walking, so today was more just a long drive around part of the Beara Peninsula (the little one in the corner), another series of spectacular views punctuated by village strolls. Today’s view highlight was Healy Pass, which surprises you by providing an absolute stunner then another one a few hundred metres on, just when you think you’re past it. Glengariff is an attractive and relatively untouristy village with a cemetery almost in the middle of town. A mid-afternoon return gave us time to catch up on communications, including this diary, and research a really good place to eat for our last night in Killarney. The restaurant we chose was closed when we turned up, but the haberdashery assistant there* told us of ... read more

Geo: 52.2568, -7.1292Blarney to WaterfordJust after passing through the second largest city in Ireland, Cork, Dylan collected the Limericks that people had written. He chose 4 people to be judges. They were to score the Limericks based on the amount of clapping and laughing the rest of did when he read the Limericks. The author of each Limerick wound not be announced. Some of the ones that he read were bad and not even in the pattern of a Limerick. One or two weren't bad, but after mine was read, it got a good response from the rest of the tourists. After the tabulations, I ended up in 1st place by 2 points. As a prize, I get a free drink at dinner. The following is my winning:There once was a girl from the US of ... read more

Geo: 52.2568, -7.1292We headed for our hotel where the driver had already unloaded our luggage. We got our room keycards and headed upstairs. The hotel, Dooley's Hotel, is located in the quayside area of Waterford. It has been owned by the same family since 1947. The place is quaint and the four poster bed and canopy is charming. There is no AC, and the reception desk said that their were no fans available. However, as I was unpacking, I heard one of the maids down the hallway talking in her little office. When she got off the phone, I asked if I could have a fan. She got me one!!! I have one window that opens, but no screen, so I hope there will not be a lot of bugs in my room tonight. Dinner was ... read more

Geo: 52.2568, -7.1292Waterford, County Waterford, Republic of IrelandWe arrived at the Waterford Crystal Factory at 3:15 p.m. The original factory opened in 1783 and closed in 1851, but reopened in 1947. Then the factory of 3,000+ workers and showroom closed 18 months ago when the company moved to somewhere in the Continental Europe due to cheaper business prices. This new place that we were visiting just opened a month ago. The city hopes to keep the tourists coming to Waterford, so had worked out with the Waterford Crystal Factory to set up this new place. It was a wonderful hour excursion! It had a large showroom where you could purchase the items on display. Even though they had some nice things, I had gotten what I wanted back in Blarney at a shop's Waterford Crystal Department. ... read more
