Up and away at 8.30 am ….. made our way to Adair a quaint tiny town known for its houses of thatched roofs, a half hour stop for toilets and photos of the cottages and some lovely woollen stores stocking Aran knitwear around 10 am …. Back on the bus and through lots of productive looking farmland with lots of stone fences and herds of only about 60 to 80 cows !!!… reached Limerick around 11am and stopped to get pictures of King Johns Castle the site dates back to 922 when the Vikings lived on the Island, the castle itself was built on the orders of King John of England in 1200….. Arrived at the Cliffs of Moher around 12.30pm and walked up to the lookout headed back down just after 1pm to get a ... read more

July 19 This day started out a little different. Since our first event was right here in town we had a later breakfast and departure time. We got to sleep in just a little longer! We went on a jaunting, horse drawn carriage ride through the Killarney National Park. It is the only means to get through the forest unless you walk, rent a bike, or ride a horse. The Ross Castle and the Lakes of Killarney are the reward at the end of the ride. Our driver Micky, and his son Patrick, were quite entertaining. Micky told stories, jokes, and even sang to us. It was a great ride! Once our ride was over, it was back on the bus headed toward the quaint town of Adare. It was to be a short trip but ... read more

Another quietish day today. We left Kinvarra and backtracked by about 40 minutes, driving north to Galway City. We wandered around a bit, finding a couple of cutsey little streets to explore, and I splashed out on an Aran knitted dress. It’s being posted to my home, so I’m hoping it’ll be waiting for me next week. As we both needed a comfort break, we went into Finnegan’s, a building pertaining to be the oldest medieval restaurant in the city. It was rather spoilt inside by the 3 television screens and loud modern music. Still, we were both more comfortable when we left. Susan looked it up on Trip Advisor, and one comment suggests it’s the worst restaurant in Ireland; it certainly isn’t the best! Susan spotted some street art of musicians and singers from the ... read more

Ierland was tenslotte neutraal gedurende WO2.

Our morning excursion was to the extraordinary Cliffs of Moher, (view map) a natural step-like exposure of escarpments overlooking the sea. In bright sunshine, the grass was emerald green, and the skies were sapphire blue, and the sea was a slosh of turquoise waves. Along with hundreds of other tourists, I carefully climbed up the worn path to the top prominence. The views at each step were much the same, but each one was fresh in the changing light. The similarities to cliffs along the coast of Newfoundland were striking – same turf, same friable edge, same crashing Atlantic Ocean. Back in the historic part of Limerick, we had a bit of time for lunch. A fair number of us went to Dolan’s, a pub where some of our group had ... read more

Irish rain at last introduced itself – overnight and this morning after breakfast. My plan for a quick departure from the hotel worked well, and I had a last breakfast at Ann’s Bakery. Two blocks in the light rain to get to the airport bus stop, and the bus came a few minutes later. I thought we were driving through a more working area of Dublin, when suddenly I recognized the central bus station from my random walk yesterday. From there we travelled at a fast pace directly to the airport, arriving in twenty minutes, half the time scheduled. Which meant I arrived before the slightly delayed arrival of the plane with all the Westwinds travellers. After considerable time, I finally saw the other members who had travelled on their own and joined them. After more ... read more

Everything normal today; argued like crazy as we negotiated our way out of Galway city morning peak hour traffic before we settled down into sedate country driving before arriving at the very small village of Kiltormer, to visit an ex colleague's primary school, which she last attended in 1999, but is still held in high esteem by the staff who are still present. Wonderful, welcoming teachers. Jane and I were welcomed with open arms and invited to speak to the whole school of 33 students ranging from year 1 to 6. Questions came flying from the youngsters, particularly about Australia's animals. I taught them Glenn Capelli's, "I Have a Magic Brain", which they videoed and now will make it their own. A truly joyous and wonderful 'recovery' to the day! The drive took us through some ... read more

we leave the farmhouse and head to the castle! we drive north, heading to the Shannon airport through the town of Limerick for a walking tour & tea and ending at a 15 Century castle for the King's Feast at Bunratty Castle with rich chamber furnishing & artwork, along with our full-costumed talented singing wait-staff. We had front-row seats at the King's table/benches, with no eating utensils (but our very own daggers). First meal, soup (slurped from the bowl), next course/appetisers Short-ribs that tenderly fell off the bone, and then the main course amazing roasted chicken with roasted vegetables. Wow. Dessert was for shared only with your true love! the Wines flowed easily from pitchers. The servers/musicians were amazing, singing all of our Irish favorites (Danny Boy) and so many more. our chariots to the castle ... read more

Off to Limerick, again with a couple of our fellow guests at the Castle, this time two women whose husbands were off golfing. Mike wanted to see the Frank McCourt Museum (http://www.frankmccourtmuseum.com/) and a bit of Limerick so we set out. We put "Limerick Visitor's Center" into the GPS and were taken/directed to just that--the Visitor's Center. For Limerick University. We went into the Student Union type building, met some lovely students, found out some basic information about the University (at least enough for Susan to deduct the whole trip as 'business-related', haha!) and directions to the Visitor's Center downtown. Re-directed the GPS and tried again. Found the garage at the Quay, just as the helpful student had said. The garage was a bit of an adventure as it climbed very tightly up and up. Walked ... read more

We arrived in Shanagolden around 8:30pm on Good Friday, after a long trip from Dublin. We had stopped in the Barrack Obama Plaza for a coffee and to give Grace a bottle. James, Anna (Dave's uncle and aunt) and Gordon settled us in, then we made a new batch of bottles before sitting down to sandwiches and a drink or two. The next day, we slept until 11 and at that stage we decided to just wait for lunch. After lunch we drove to Ashford, where Donal and Veronica live. They have two dogs; a boxer called Hugo and a small terrier called Chester. We had tea and cake, and Grace got acquainted with Hugo (Chester wasn't allowed near her as he's a bit bitey. Kathy, Dave's cousin, and her boyfriend, Nev, joined us after a ... read more
