Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

The two things I cannot leave Galway, after living here for 6 months, without doing are visiting the Aran Islands, and seeing the Cliffs of Moher. Since it’s not getting any closer to summer weather, Ally and I decided to just do it. We caught the last ferry to Inishmore, the biggest of the 3 Aran Islands at population of 700, on Thursday evening and checked into the Kilronan Hostel, a stone’s throw from the pier. Dave, our kooky host from Cork, checked us in and because he booked us into a room with a male whose name led Dave to [View Full Entry]

I love starting my trips through Ireland in Galway. It's the perfect quaint little Irish town one often thinks of when they have only seen pictures of Ireland. The nice big Eyre Square in the middle of town makes a great place to chill on warm sunny days and people watch. Another one of the great things Galway has going for it, is it's night life. Since there is a college in Galway, this younger population brings with it a lively creative culture, but on a small town scale. This can be seen as you wonder the streets, day or night, [View Full Entry]

We left for Galway around 5pm on Friday on the Irish bus service Bus Eirann. I was very excited for this trip because it would be our first time out of Carlow. Plus we had a group of eight girls so we were excited to have a little girls weekend getaway! The bus first took us to Athlone where we caught a second one to Galway. The trip was gorgeous! We passed so many rolling hills and beautiful old farmhouses and a few ruins of churches and castle. And of course we passed many adorable Irish sheep! We got to Galway [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the brevity yesterday, but internet time is scarce until our service is hooked up. And although we’ve made several desperate and futile attempts, we have been unable to “share” the internet with our neighbors. So where did I leave off . . . ah yes. As we were leaving Dingle, there was one more little bonus it had to offer. There is a tiny little town as you leave the main city of Dingle called Spiddle. If you blink, you’d pass it by. We happened not to blink, and found ourselves on this quaint little beach. As Brian was [View Full Entry]

So this entry will have no photos and no fun stories (if you've already stopped reading I understand). Brian and I made it to Galway, I recovered from my cold, and we have an apartment. Since we don't have internet set up and it costs a fortune in the cafes the brevity will continue for a bit of time. I fell settled, at home, and happy to be on this adventure. I set up the collage in our apartment and it keeps me motivated to continue on my journey. I also just finished reading "The Last Lecture" which if you haven't [View Full Entry]

Midway Through Galway

I leave for New York in two days time and I still can’t believe I’ll be back in the US and in New York, no less. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and being in NY as a tourist, but at the same time already feel like I’ll be missing out here in Galway and can’t wait to get back. I’m torn like that. I feel like my time left here is so limited and fleeting. Since my last entry, nearly a month ago, my wee sister has joined the Galway community and I’ve been carded at nearly every bar ever [View Full Entry]
