Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Its 5:25AM here in Ireland. Brian has been watching the election coverage on the laptop since midnight our time while my mom sent texts with every update as each state’s decision was made. Two weeks ago, my mom and my sister came to join Brian and myself in Ireland after their first stops in New York and Florence and Chrissy’s continuation of her trip to Cape Town and Lasutu, Africa. The Tale of the Lost Ring

Forever altered

I am recovering from the most amazing night ever. I love Galway. We went to the Quay pub last night to see live music, hoping to mix with locals and to drink lovely fresh Guinness. The music was unreal. 4 guys who just kept playing one amazing trad hit after another. I asked them if they could play "Star of the County Down", but not all of them knew it. So technically the Oyster Festival was September 25th-28th but life has been a little busy as you can well imagine. So, every year people from around the world flock to Galway to witness the International Oyster Festival, which is centered around the Oyster Opening Competition and Pearl Competition. Eyre Square Flags

I love starting my trips through Ireland in Galway. It's the perfect quaint little Irish town one often thinks of when they have only seen pictures of Ireland. We left for Galway around 5pm on Friday on the Irish bus service Bus Eirann. I was very excited for this trip because it would be our first time out of Carlow. Plus we had a group of eight girls so we were excited to have a little girls weekend getaway! The bus first took us to Athlone where we caught a second one to Galway. The trip was gorgeous!
