Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

That darn haze! It's a little hard to make them out, but they're there.
We arrived in Galway on Wednesday and it's been great so far. Maybe my favourite Irish city yet. We spent yesterday walking around the city and seeing a few sights. Galway is quite small for a major city, but it's got great atmosphere. We're staying right in the heart of town and everything is within easy walking distance. The Galway Arts Festival has been on for the past two weeks and ends tomorrow. It's really a good time to be here. There are street performers all along the major streets, and yesterday we went to a photography exhibition at NUIG (National [View Full Entry]

Cliffs of Moher

Hello from Galway, Ireland!! I've been here for two nights already and decided to stay for another, just because it's so great here! Yesterday I took a bus tour to the Cliffs of Moher, which was Gorgeous!!! I still haven't figured out how to put my pictures up but as soon as I figure it out, they will be up! I got to learn a lot about the history of Ireland and actually found the tour really interesting. It's still gray and gloomy here, but everyone is so nice and I'm enjoying myself so much that the weather doesn't really even [View Full Entry]

Inhale deeply Breeze blowing through my skin. Let it out. A moment to reflect within. A stranger's smile A road unknown. A moment where I feel alone. Welcoming handshakes, exchange of names. Two separate worlds - for a moment the same. Some will stay others will part. A moment where a friendship starts. A stranger's kiss Two hands as one A moment ended with the morning sun A glance at new landscapes A new patch of sky Each, a moment - diminished with time Some lasting memories some quickly fade No promise of tomorrow. A moment just for today. Memories unexpected [View Full Entry]

Galway Ireland

I just arrived in Galway, Ireland. It was a very long 4 hour bus ride to get here, but the scenery was beautiful and I like this town already. It's what you would picture a small Irish town to be like. There was live music in the square and a lot of people just hanging out on the grass listening. Definately my kind of scene. After I checked into my hostel, I headed down and hung out for a bit, it was nice to relax and the weather is gorgeous today! Still a little cool but at least there is sun!! [View Full Entry]

Yes!
Yes!
We found the Cliffs of Moher.
We arrived on the Emerland Isle on Sunday night. After a few flight delays we were wondering if we were going to get here, but we did. No overnights in the airport like last year! We took a bus to Galway on Monday and belive we have landed at one of the most festive places in Ireland! If it wasnt obvious by our huge GREEN plane with a countdown to St. Pat's day, then it was here in Galway. That was very evident to us last night as we were sitting in an Irish pub listening to an awesome Irish band [View Full Entry]

After months of talking about it, I am finally living in Galway! Things couldn't have worked out better in terms of my arrival here. I had an email from a friend who lives in Dublin to say that she was going to be house sitting in Galway the week that I arrived. So I spent a few days with her being introduced to different people and was given the grand tour of the city. I managed to find an apartment really quickly too. I couldn't ask for a better location as it's above a nightclub, right in the middle of the [View Full Entry]

July 12, 2008 Galway, Ireland The internet "dongle" is working! What you might ask is a "dongle"? It is a broadband connection that we purchased in England and sometimes it works and sometimes...NO. When it works.... we try to get emails and blogs going. The Internet Cafe system gets old... quick. So for a while this morning we are trying to catch up on news. Getting into Galway, once you know the roads, is easy, so off we go. It is Saturday and a farmers market is bustling. This is Ireland, so it is raining again, and we decide to go [View Full Entry]

Girls Night Out
Girls Night Out
One of the first nights in Galway listening to traditional Irish music
Hey everyone! I just had my first week of classes and so far so good, I am learning a great deal about the troubles of Ireland’s long past. Last Friday we went out to Connemara and County Mayo, and saw a great deal of sheep/cows and the only fjord in Ireland. It was absolutely breath-taking, the mountains and hills everywhere, and of course tons and tons of green! I still can’t believe how quickly the weather changes here, there really is no point of a weather channel, I swear. One second it is raining, the next it is sunny, then another [View Full Entry]
