After loading our gear into the cab, we headed to start of our hike at Marlay Park in south Dublin. Kathy told me last night that I could only have 33 lbs in my pack. I didn't tell her it weighed 46 lbs at the airport. They took it anyway....I'm glad I didn't have to carry the damn thing. After a cup of coffee and loading our pack into the transfer van, we were off. Did I mention that the forcast call for rain. Our first day was scheduled for 14 miles. We were on the trail at 9:36...exactly. About noonish it started raining and it rained and rained and rained. Apparently Lexington gets about 46 inches of rain as does Ireland. The difference is in Ireland, it rains all the time. We hiked in some ... read more

Friday we were relegated to the local area around Sandymount due to the rail and bus strikes. This was not necessarily a bad thing because we were able to walk the surrounding area including Irishtown and a portion along the coast of the Irish Sea. Found several promising areas to live consisting of small brike row houses that were very cute. We did find that the Irish dogs are much better mannered than most Americans. Kathy and I tried to entice them over for a pet but they would have none of it. There was a football game (rugby) scheduled in Aviva Stadium on Saturday so our hotel was setting up for the festivities. Lots of people checking in and asking about the strike. The local rugby team, the Wasps, had banners on every corner. I ... read more

Landed in Dublin on Wednesday morning after a sleepness night on the plane. But that did not deter our enthusiam upon reaching Ireland. After getting through customs, we obtain our 3 day bus pass and began wearing out the Dublin busses. The bus company threatened to take our pass away if we didn't take it easy. Now that we have figured out the bus and train routes, we have been in downtown Dublin many times. Yesteday (Wednesday) Kathy and I walked along the canal and some streets around the Aviva Stadium just to get out and about after our flight. It didn't take us long before we realized that we had to be extremely careful crossing the streets because the drivers are on the left side. Being use to the US, we naturally looked to the ... read more

This weekend we took a trip to Dublin as an API group. That is, at 10am on Saturday al of us piled onto the bus with Finn, Kevin, and the three munchkins and headed to Dublin for the night. Now, before this trip I was feeling weary. It was a rough week for me in terms of my anxiety, a bit of homesickness, and just everything. But this trip changed that. I got the pleasure of sitting in front of Roisin and Aisling for the long three hour bus ride. They are five and six years old respectively and have more energy than anyone I have ever seen before. I laughed with them, I played games with them, and I wrote stories with them. Time spent with these two little girls made me completely forget about ... read more

Not really, it is famous Templebar in downtown Dublin. In fact, the area is called Temple Bar, an area on the south bank of the Liffey River in central Dublin, Ireland. It is promoted as Dublin's cultural center, with a nightlife enjoyed by tourists like me. The most popular places are the Temple Bar Pub itself, along with The Palace Bar, Oliver St. John Gogarty's, and The Auld Dubliner. Originally, the area was St. Andrews Parish. Legend has it that Temple Bar Street got its name from Sir William Temple of Trinity College. His home and garden were located there in the 17th century. However, the name may also be derived from the famous district in London of the same name. Maybe they played the copy cat game instead of honoring poor Sir William. The first ... read more

Our journey from Prague back to my hometown turned out to be quite an eventful one. First of all our train from Prague to Ostrava was late so I was sure we were going to miss the next one – the one that was supposed to take us all the way to the northern Poland, to Malbork... As always I should’ve just stayed calm and not stress out at all as even though we arrived at the platform well after our scheduled time, it turned out that Malbork train was late as well, so we made it in the end. Pheeeew... I wasn’t too impressed when it turned out that it was the regular 8-seater cabin train though as you never know who you will be stuck with in that cabin during your journey. Fortunately we ... read more

Day 14 The last day and the sun is shining, but dew on the ground and a nip in the air demanding full gloves for first hour. A steady climb for 1 1/2 hrs up to Laragh where a brew and sausage rolls is called for at the fuel station cum store. There I used for the first time a new Nescafe coffee machine which asks you if you want more than one shot, takes the cup up into the machine and does a bit of spinning and grinding before presenting you with the perfect specimen. It was a good job I refuelled here because there was nowhere else all the way to Dublin. As it was with he prevailing wind to the rear for most of the time I was in the city outskirts by 1pm ... read more

No one expects to find Dracula at the gym, or at least, not until they've been to Dublin and then it may seem quite normal. For at Clontarf there is a Dracula Experience at Westwood Gym, a rather unusual place to rock up at (being a rather large health and fitness centre), and then be escorted past all the fitness posters, equipment and various treatment rooms to the Dracula Hall of Fame, then ultimately to his castle. Naturally it was dark, loud and extremely disorientating, populated by the undead waiting to scare the bejesus out of every silly tourist without fail. Talking of undead, I was beginning to feel this way by the time we'd reached the castle as throughout the day, I'd walked over 30,000 steps... My first 1,500 steps had been between midnight and ... read more

Two days in Dublin We started with the Red bus tour. Always a good way to get your bearings and an overview of what’s to do and see. Great personal and humours commentary by our guide. Two days! Who decided two days? What to do? Now feeling a great case of FOMO…If in doubt head to the shops. Just as overwhelming there, although I manged to make a couple purchases. Back to O’Connell street for the 3 o’clock “1916” tour. This year is the 100yr anniversary of the Easter uprising of 1916. Excellent young guide who was so enthusiastic about the history of Dublin and the 1916 uprising, he was able to show us by walking us around the different locations and points of reference of what actually happened, when and where that Easter, and how ... read more

No pictures yet. Spent yesterday recovering from the flight and today trying to catch up with all we did not do yesterday. Went the Guinness Brewery and Deb got to pour her own pint. While Dublin is rather compact there can be a LOT of walking. Tomorrow will be the museum tours and then on Thursday to the motorbikes. The streets here are rather small. A duelly would not make it! I have seen 2 busses close enough reach out and touch your hands across and have a bicycle rider go between then at speed. Not only that they drive on the wrong side of the road. The good thing is that the driving we will be doing will be in lesser populated areas. Our hotel is right in the middle of the Temple Bar district ... read more
