So guess what the weather was like in cork today??..... if you guessed rain you are a BIG winner. But again it wasn't hard rain so it wasn't terrible, but since I'm sick it made it a little less pleasurable than normal. I had two classes today, should have had three but one got canceled, thank GOD because I was sniveling and sneezing the whole 3 hours I did have class and 2 more would have been even more miserable!! (Why does being sick always make you want your mother?? I miss and love you moma!!) After class my roommate and I went to find good fish and chips. I didn't want the doughnut kind again so we went to this place called the traditional irish pub. It was A LOT better, it actually tasted real! ... read more

I am officially now allowed to reside in Ireland. It even says so on a cool stamp on my passport!! Well technically two since one says till March and now the new one says till september. I got my fingerprints and picture taken (which made me realize my hair is getting frecking long! its like a half inch past my collar bone- yikes it hasnt been this long since high school) and everything and even have an official card that I have to travel with :) Ya I'm cool (haha not really) I took some pics for you guys so you could see the other side of the city. I think I even got a pic of city hall :) And despite my total tourist vibe, I got asked for directions (and new where to send ... read more

Lamu - A Small Piece of Paradise Hello again. So to try and bring you all up to date a little. Just before Christmas, and so that we didn’t come home to our families exhausted from our time in Kibera, we headed for the coast and some relaxation. But our journey east was a tale of two entirely different modes of transport: 1. The train line to Mombasa dates from colonial times, and we doubt it has changed much since then. The timetable says the journey takes 15 hours, but in truth I think it rarely manages that. Ours stopped numerous times, went backwards for a few miles at one point and managed the journey in a little over 20 hours. But who is in a rush? First class tickets include a two bed cabin, ... read more

Today was just a hoot. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. First off it has been raining all day and yesterday too. Not the nasty downpour but the light happy rain that just makes me want to sing. Needless to say even though I was soaked most of the day, I was in pure bekah heaven!! Anyway, I'm going to start at the end of my day and go to the beginning because I don't want to forget what happened. The coolest thing ever happened: In my class today my teacher actually used the phrase "in due course." YEAH! For all of you lovers of randomly old british things (cough, moose) it just tickled me to death and I wanted to share. I kind of giggled and wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget ... read more

It was a typical monday. Nothing much happened, I was so tired from the weekend that I stayed in bed till half eleven. Once I finally got up I had to go to a tutorial for one of my classes, I learned that tests are pretty much what the normal art history test is back home. So Adan prepared me well. When I came back my roommate and I went to the english market, which is a pretty interesting place with little venues and sellers of different things. But it is really overwhelming and I didn't get anything. We then headed off to our irish culture class, where he talked about irish literature which was quite boring and not what I had hoped for after last week. But some of the topics coming up are more ... read more

This is the last message for a few days... remember don't call my mom and tell her something is wrong with me. She will be freaked out enough I'm sure. I will return on Sunday and leave a message about my weekend. So on that note I will tell you what I realized today: this city is SO beautiful. It is under a near constant cover of fog, which rather than making the city seem unapproachable it just seems charming. There is a mist that just sits in the air and makes it smell like rain in every breath. I have never lived in a place where it stayed this cold or this wet for more than a few days, and all the green and mist is just the most magical thing I have ever seen. ... read more

So today definitely can't compare to yesterday. Today was just a blah day, sorry to disappoint. I had class from 10-1 then 3-4 so I was in class most of the day. Nothing too exciting. I did find out that I got into the "Modern Irish" class today. So that is really exciting! (And within 5 min of that ended up behind my teacher in line that I had two of the three classes with today, and kind of felt a little bit like a stalker.) Anyway, I get to learn a bit of the language while I'm here!!!!!!!!!!!! And can impress you all with my random knowledge when I return. Other than that I had renaissance class this morning and learned about the church Oranmichele in Florence, which was pretty cool. History lesson: it was ... read more

AMAZING AMAZING DAY!!!! (I feel very positive on this thing, I guess I need to start being the negative-nancy all of you love?... maybe tomorrow??) 4 big-amazing things happened today which in no particular order will follow. First off, I got to do my laundry today for the first time here. Let me just say that was an experience! And just for the record, it takes two hours to JUST wash clothes here. The drier, we were told, takes two times and still leaves the clothes wet. Which was proved when my roommate tried to dry her's yesterday. So I just washed and oh man my clothes smell good!! they are still wet but are all over the living room drying as we speak. YAY clean clothes!! I have a few clothes I manged not to ... read more

So after consulting with my roommate, who also has a blog on this site, I have FINALLY figured out how to put photos on this blog. My camera cord arrived today, and I uploaded all my Christmas and New Years photos, as well as my Ardmore photos. It was great seeing all those familiar faces as I put the Christmas/New Years album up on Facebook. But for all you loyal readers, here are a few photos from Ardmore!... read more

Weather recap: sunday it was snowing; yesterday it was sunny and kind of cold; today it was raining. God has definitely been in play for a few days and will probably continue to be mischievous (or maybe its the faeries?). So ya raining today so I donned my polka dotted rain boots and london fog rain jacket and hopped around in the rain to my morning class. Id like to say I stayed dry but I think any time you have to walk about 15 min, you are bound to get a little wet, I definitely got a little wet, but am dry now. This morning like a miraculous spring our water started pouring out of the turned on faucets. It was a little scary cause I was actually just waking up and it was brown ... read more
