Ok, so the internet has been down for a couple days. Here’s the plan. Maybe once a week I will log on and tell you what is going on. I feel awfully guilty borrowing someone else’s computer, even though I suppose I shouldn’t, but I’m going to take some time to get you all up to speed. So all of these farm animals I have never worked with before. I milk cows, feed pigs, feed chickens, and get eggs from the chicken coop. That’s the everyday barn stuff (even though I already probably told you that). Three times a week we sell the eggs, milk, and meat at different markets. So this past Saturday we went to Cork for a market. I was able to walk around the city with Anne and Anna (the other volunteers). ... read more

Ok I’ve arrived at the farm! I really can’t talk long because I am borrowing someone else’s computer. I will definitely have to figure out how I can communicate with people. As of yet, my cell phone does not make calls out and I have only 2 bars of service here. People can call me though, so if someone needs to talk to me they can definitely try! I will write a longer, more detailed post later (at some point), but right now I am working with farm animals. Milking cows, feeding pigs, going into chicken coops to pull out eggs… all stuff I have never done before and stuff that freaks me out! I am definitely confronting fears. This morning I let piglets out by accident and we had to Chase them around. Dogs tried ... read more

Sunday and Monday, June 28-29 - Pirates of Kinsale Next on the Rick Steves itinerary was the town of Kinsale, just below Cork in southern Ireland. One of the reasons I was excited to visit County Cork was because I had another Irish ancestor connection here. After my great grandfather (the one from Sligo) immigrated to the United States, he met and married Elizabeth Collins who was from Cork. So after this trip I could say that I had visited the home towns of both my great grandparents.. Sausalito, Not. Kinsale was a more upscale town than other places we had visited. The Rick Steves book said it was like Sausalito (the little town on the other side of the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco), but it reminded me more of Bar Harbor, Maine with ... read more

Yes, I kissed the Blarney Stone. I can hear you all now, various comments about coals to Newcastle, wondering if it exploded on contact, gales of laughter. Bring on the sarc. Had to be done. And it ain't easy. The trek up the winding stone stair is near-vertical and extremely narrow - room only for a rope strung along the wall to help with the going. This one poor lady from Taiwan early had a meltdown what with the combined tight space and height. Her pals had to get her calmed down and then figure out a way to get her to take the stairs back to the bottom. There was much wailing. Up on the ramparts the view was terrific. Blarney Castle is pretty well preserved and a real feat of architecture and the grounds ... read more

Thursday 11th June Limerick to Cork via The Ring of Kerry The Tour Directors cold is improving but for the cough and I am still waiting my turn but are eating oranges and any type of vitamin C I can get my hands on to keep it at bay.Perhaps more Guiness will be a good idea. A long day is planned for today as we will take in the Rink of Kerry which is reported to be the best and most scenic touring road in Ireland. As we had travelled the River Shannon road yesterday we took an inland road, the N21,to Tralee and then onto Killorglin to start the road that circles probably the most mountainous area of Ireland. As we expected the road was busy and at the start the buses were particulary noticeable although ... read more

Woke up in time to have a bowl of Corn Flakes from the counter for 85p and had to leave frantically not knowing where this bus station was. Went the wrong way a few times and it said to be there at 1015 and it was already 1012. Ended up finding the station in the middle of nowhere. Bus didnt leave and there was only one other couple waiting for it so I was in good shape. Driver showed up and said anyone for the Ring of Kerry its that bus and walks across the street to get a coffee or something. Didnt even check tickets or nothing I shouldnt have paid for the damn thing. Turned out to be quite the character Irishman bus driver. He told us that the man who bought the Killarney ... read more
