G'day Ireland, I arrived in Ireland on Sunday June 8. Arriving in Cork Airport at 10am after a 4 hour 'connection' in London heathrow, I was amazed at the difference. Cork Airport is a very small Airport with a terminal building that should be at a large airport.....hence you get through in minutes, no crowds, no hassle. Makes Heathrow look like a zoo. I met my mate John who has been in Ireland for 3 years and he drove me to Crosshaven where he lives right now. We went directly to a pub in the middle of the village called cronins . We mwt up with some Welsh people, some Grermans and of course some very entertaining locals. John seemed to know them all. Nice to see a genuine Irish pub, nothing like the ones that ... read more

I was dreaming of it for years and then planning it for another two years...Originally i had hoped to travel europe the summer after my leaving cert was complete but those plans fell through and then it was delayed until the following summer... With one year of college down it was time to finally get out there and start seeing the world...for years I have drove friends and family insane with all my talk of travelling and getting away from Ireland to see what else was out there and now finally I have the chance to do exactly that... So myself and my ever so good friend James are heading to Brussels on May 29th from Dublin airport and making our way through europe towards Turkey! Here I plan on staying for the remainder of the ... read more

www.theredquest.com “Sweet bloody Jesus! And Christ almighty!” came the voice of man behind us. These were the first words Angela and I heard upon our arrival at Cork International Airport. What caused the man to utter these words we did not know, but it cheered us nonetheless. We had arrived in Ireland and it sounded good. Cork was founded in the sixth century by the wonderfully named Saint Finbarr. He founded a monastery, around which settlements soon grew. As time passed, the Vikings came and destroyed parts of the city, but it was soon rebuilt. However by the seventeenth century Cork finally hit the big time. It became the butter capital of the World, providing butter to ships plying the busy transatlantic routes. Then came famine followed by British interference, which drove the city into decline. ... read more

Last night, our waitress suggested visiting these two towns which are just outside Cork. Kinsale is a fishing port. While Cobh is a fishing port too, it is more famous for being the final point of departure for the fateful voyages of the Titanic and Lusitania. We drove back into City Cork and spend the afternoon shopping for short sleeve shirts for me (all I packed was sweaters and it has been in the 70s). We found a Captain America’s Pub (John’s favorite comic book character) and shared a pizza for dinner. ... read more

Pugin in Ireland

Here are a few pictures of another church designed by Pugin, Ss. Peter and Paul in Cork. The Blessed Sacrament was exposed for adoration, so I was somewhat limited in what pictures I could take. I had intended to hear the traditional Latin Mass here at 10 a.m., but my €2 alarm clock failed to wake me in time. Oh well, at least I got a good, solid nine or ten hours of sleep. I inadvertently deleted the pictures I took there this morning (I'm not used to moving files on Windows Vista), so I went back this afternoon for a few shots. I also picked up some political literature in the back of the church about the "abolition of the Irish Nation for the EU Dictatorship." The other pamphlet was titled "A Godless Empire." I ... read more

We made it to Cork in one piece! As it turns out, I had to drive from Dublin to Cork (3+ hours), which wasn't exactly what I had bargained for, but all is well! The actual competition is tomorrow night; our twelve minutes on stage will be what we've been preparing for all semester. Our performances yesterday and today went very well. Here are a few pictures. Also, check out Ashley and Chris's blogs at http://socontinental.blogspot.com/ and http://www.chrisjosof.com/Light/Blog/Entries/2008/4/30_Much_needed_rest.html Patrick... read more

I'm in Cork now, flew over from Cardiff eight days ago, which means I'm on day 5 of 7 here. So far I have learnt and forgotten some Gaelic (aka Irish). The government people in Ireland are trying to reintroduce it as a widely spoken language (as if that's going to work) so they've put the Irish translations onto road signs etc, and in some places everything's in Irish (which is very confusing when you're looking for the toilets but walk straight into the staff office!). Anyway, I can't think of anything else to write, except Iva, if you're reading this, thanks for being great! (by the way Iva is the person who's spare room I'm renting for the week that I'm here). Hello from Ireland. We have been touring around the Emerald Island for the last couple of weeks, knocking a bit of rust off our van Bert (due to the very bumpy roads). We dropped in on some more of Sandra's relations Hugh, Peter and Clodagh for some welcome home cooking before sailing out of Holyhead, north Wales. We landed staight into rush hour traffic in Dublin, and immediately got very lost and rather frustrated with the traffic queues (especially as we had arrived without a map). Thank god for Jonny White, our cellphone and his map, who in 20 minutes had talked us to his front doorstep :) Jonny took very good care of us over the following couple of days, giving us the run of his apartment, entertaining us in the evening, and letting us ... read more

I've put up pictures on my picture site. I've set up folders for them, so peek through the folders to the left. dropshots.com/imaginarygill Go look! PS... the site went funny on me and scooted everything to the left. So, some of my captions or the pictures might be missing letters because I ws blind typing. There's also a caption of a scenery pic saying "Cows!"... that's not supposed to be there lol But the site won't let me edit it right now, so it's going to have to stay that way for now.... read more
