In Iceland there is a joke: What do you do if you get lost in a forest in Iceland? Answer: Stand-up. What they lack in trees they make up for in spectacular 360° vistas. This is a country about the size of the US state of Kentucky with about 300,000 people. It could be the prototype for a Utopian society. Everyone works, health care is free, state universities are free, and no one will ever go hungry as they are surrounded by fish. It was probably one of the first democracies as they formed a parliment and established laws in the year 930. They had a strong code of punishments which tended to keep licentious behavior under control. For example, if an unmarried woman was found to be pregnant she was thrown in the 'drowning pool'. ... read more

Swedish Midsummer tradition suggests that anyone in the search of romance and true love performs a certain ritual on the Midsummer night. The ritual consists in jumping over seven fences/walls, pick seven different kinds of flowers, then put the flowers under the pillow, and then sleep on it. Do that, and you will dream about the person you will marry. The Nordic countries share a lot of culture and history, and it turns out that this tradition is also known in Iceland. Randomly meeting a group of young girls after a night out on Midsummer, me and my travel companion half-heartedly pick up on the tradition. We jump two walls, but don’t bother to pick any flowers. The next night - admittedly after a few glasses of wine - we decide that there is no reason ... read more

Midsummer. The longest day of the year. Not widely celebrated, except for in the Nordic countries. What turned out to be a great way to celebrate it was in northern Iceland. Starting with a bath in the hot springs near Myvatn, followed by a short sauna session. Thereafter a trip to one of the mightiest waterfalls on the island - Detifoss. A not so well known dirt road with a landscape that might as well have been the moon (and indeed, the astronauts did actually train for their missions to the moon here) leads up to this impressive waterfall. The roar from the amount of water falling over the edge is deafening, but at the same time extremely peaceful. Midnight is closing in. Icelandic tradition bids that we are supposed to sit in the middle of ... read more

I think it's time for one, don't you? 1: I will have a good time. 2: I will live sparingly (not that I have a choice). 3: I will not grumble about item #2. 4: I will not waste my time on "touristy" things. 5: I will attempt to converse with the natives (I feel like a colonial explorer now...great). 6: I will learn at least one interesting fact about each place I visit. 7: I will not panic if something goes wrong. 8: I will try local delicacies and embrace local custom without prejudice. 9: I will not accumulate unneccessary baggage. Oh, bugger this. ... read more

Iceland. Who goes to Iceland? Well, that's pretty much the reason we went. Our entire trip that we planned had revolved around the 'tourist hotspots,' and Logan and I decided we wanted go somewhere a little off the beaten path. The first thing I noticed about Iceland when flying over was how flat it was. If the sea level rised a few feet, Iceland would be plunged into the Ocean. I couldn't help but hope that Al Gore's Invonvenient Truth didn't become an inconvenient reality for Iceland. "Iceland" doesn't quite fit its name. The place was actually quite green; the natural beauty, quite astonishing. I can definitely say the same thing for the women on the island as well. Logan and I really couldn't believe how many beautiful women there are in Iceland. Walking down ... read more

We made it! Sarah and I arrived in Reykjavik arond 2am EST ....7am in Iceland. We were totally dazed and confused, running on adrenaline. What we didn't realize is that the International airport is about 45 minutes from the city of Reykjavik and that the area in between is completely uninhabited. Miles and miles of volcanic rock with the only vegetation being mosses and lupine. It was beautiful, unlike anything we have ever seen before. The guesthouse where we stayed for the night was really cute, about a 15 minute walk from the town center. Once we dropped off our bags and found some coffee, we decided the best way to handle our jetlag would be to soak in the blue lagoon. The blue lagoon is a geothermally heated pool about 40 minutes outside of ... read more
