Jo and I took a trip to Iceland for 4 days/3nights at the start of February 2008. I have been before, the previous March, and found the place unlike anywhere I have been before, so decided Jo had to see it as well. OIn the way out we were delayed by 5 hours at Glasgow airport due to appalling weather conditions facing the preceding flight which was leaving from Reykjavik to collect us. That boded well. While we should have arrived at 1pm and had the large part of the Thursday ahead of us, we finally got into the hotel at about 7pm and just had time to change and get out for dinner and a couple of drinks. That said, the sceneryt was incredible on that first day. It has snowed heavily for a couple ... read more

Fantastic weekend in the South West area of Iceland. Normal two wheel drive car £90 from Budget car hire. Stayed in centre of Rykjavik in Hotel fron. Cheap, clean and a good breakfast. Went round the Waterfalls, Blue Lagoon and the Geysers all in one day. It's easy to navigate the area and you can find cheap places to eat and drink. We made our own sarnies from the food available at breakfast time in the hotel including drinks! Take the coast road via Grindavik for the best views of the North Atlantic. The locals are great. Not much to do in Rykjavik apart from wondering around the flea market so get out to the National Park area towards Pingvalla to see the two continental plate ridges. Well worth visiting the area. Hope this helps - ... read more

Before I begin you may have noticed in the last blog I had named some of the photos 'Iceland' -they were in fact Geneva not Iceland I must have had Iceland on the brain! Here you will find out why... On the 9th Nicola and I left for Iceland along with 8 others, we didn't arrive in Reykjavik (the capital pronounced reck-a-vick) until midnight and by the time we got to bed after getting the shuttle to our Hotel named Cabin Hotel it was around 3am. (it wasn't cabins, just named that... weird.) We got up around 8am for a Buffet Breakfast in the Hotel and then headed off to get a bus to The Blue Lagoon -Thermal Pools. We missed the bus by 5 minutes but it was as if it was meant to be.. ... read more

After missing the Northern Lights in Alaska, I traveled to Iceland, December 4-9, 2007, hoping to see them. Iceland is a Scandinavian country lying between Norway and Greenland. It is an island nation the size of Kentucky with a peninsula extending from its northwestern corner that looks like a crab with pinchers. Iceland was a Danish colony until 1944. It became independent when the Nazis occupied Denmark. Iceland's flag has the Scandinavian cross, a red cross outlined in white against a blue field. Greenland was granted self-rule by Denmark in 1979. People like to say that "Iceland is green, and Greenland is covered with ice." Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream. It was not nearly as cold in Reykjavik as it was in Boston. I flew U.S. Airways to Boston and took Icelandair. I landed ... read more

We went to Iceland for XMAS with Daves family who are also over here (Daves cousin Mike and is wife Caz and Jen Irlam). This was the most amazing holiday ever for the unbelievable scenery.. It was also very cold it reached a high of -8 degrees on our first day there with a wind chill factor of something rediculous. We hired a car and drove around the surrounding areas of the capital Reykavik. So here are all the photos which really dont do it justice. Hope everyone had a great XMAS too!!!!... read more

Yes, it's that time of year again. The shortest day of the year is behind me (4 hours of "sunlight" thankyouverymuch) and before me I can feel better days. Days of working my ass off (I have a job now. Innit great?), planning, scrimping and complaining about the costof everything. And after all that, in a mere 180 days - travelling! Since last summer's little...excursion...didn't quite go as planned, I'll have to rectify that next summer. I will, however, leave my schedule more flexible than last time. So far all I have planned is Roskilde (as usual), Copenhagen and Amsterdam. I'll probably go alone, surf couches and try to write. I'll travel even lighter than last time, only a small backpack (and I mean small - about 40x30x20 cm) containing one change of clothes, basic toiletries ... read more

November 30 to December 2nd --- Reykjavik Iceland A bit of a delay in preparing this blog; once we reach Iceland I took a break in updating the blog, probably because we were close to home and once home Wow was there ever a lot of things that demanded immediate attention. Anyway back to Iceland; the first thing that registered was how far north Iceland is. The sun rose between 10 an 10:30 a.m. and did a low arc on the horizon to set around 3 p.m. One of the things that registered with me and I could never get a straight answer from our guide was that each morning we were up and about by 9 am, but when you looked at traffic it was very light or if you looked lights in apartment windows ... read more

(Well, this is my SECOND attempt to send the COMPLETE blog entry on the Blue Lagoon.......am having technical difficulties this morning!) Good morning, everyone! Well, my body clock is totally confused..........went to bed at 7:30 last night; up and at 'em at 4:30 this morning! It will take a few days to get oriented again. Tons of snow fell in London, Ontario yesterday. Guess I"ll be out shovelling later this morning..........the ride home from the airport on Sunday night was a "white knuckle" affair. I was the only person in the airport shuttle and was glad that I wasn't doing the driving! It's the same type of weather that welcomed us back last year. Big news today..........it's Carroll's birthday!!!!! Happy Birthday to you, my friend! Thinking of you, and missing you already! It was so much ... read more
