And now for something completely different...having done most of our traveling in warmer climes, we decided to take a detour and head to a more northern destination this time: Iceland! Seems to be the popular locale right now, and after visiting I can certainly understand why...the plan was to be here for ten days (a couple in Reykjavik, 7 days driving/camping around the Ring Road and a final day at Blue Lagoon) followed by three more in Amsterdam...wicked! Arrived in Reykjavik at the tender hour of 6 am, and after the somewhat obligatory stop at the duty free in the airport (best prices in the country for wine/spirits apparently) we arrived at our hotel an hour later...due to the exorbitant costs of hotel rooms (and frankly everything else) we opted to not book the night we ... read more

Een ... read more

Somewhere over Greenland... 9:45pm Seattle Time, 4:45am Reykjavik Time, 6:45am Haigerloch Time Time is a funny thing. It is relative, akin to distance. While measurable, constant and finite, it is, nevertheless, relative within the realm of human consciousness. Three hundred sixty-five days, one year, yet seemingly the blink of an eye. Perception is reality after all. One year ago we were making first contact with our German partners via email, not even to the point of speaking face to face via Skype. The idea of flying half way around the world to stay in their home was something less than reality, not yet tangible. As I peer out of the window on our Iceland Air flight, gazing in awe at the twilight alpenglow shining majestically on the glaciers of Greenland and the masses of drifting icebergs ... read more

Well it's that time of year again ? Since we got married we always vowed to take it in turns to plan our anniversary holiday ? This, of course it used to be Top Secret but 7yrs on and we get too excited for that. ? This year...it was my hubby's Andrew's turn......and shock horror he chose Iceland. For anyone who knows Andrew, for him to choose a place without a railway was a real shock ? . Think we were all 'trained' from last years adventures which unfortunately turned out to be quite hard work due to my fibromyalgia ? . So adapt we must and Iceland was ideal....one base for the week. We flew out of Manchester, a new airport for us which is always a plus for hubby. Security was slow going so ... read more

After packing a bit we decided to go Geocaching. We found a lovely hike within three minutes of the house - Stadarborg. It is a partially built stone structure with a fascinating history. On the hike you followed the cairns from one spot to the next. The moss along the rocks was so squishy and soft. At that geocache we left our geocoin and picked up one from the Czech Republic to leave in a VA geocache. After that we finished packing and went off to look at the Blue Lagoon and top off the gas tank. Today is very cloudy, foggy, and misty/rain. But again we can't complain as we had ten days of sunny warmer weather. At the airport our flight was delayed. The airport had fussball tables and other things set around. So ... read more

This morning brought snoozing until late (9am). Once we got going we drove to the Bridge Between Continents. At this point you are witnessing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge pulling apart. Thus you can walk across the bridge and you move from The Eurasian Continental Plate to the North American Continental Plate. The average separation is 2cm a year or 6 meters in 100 years. This process means the Atlantic Ocean is growing and Iceland is on the growth path. This rift of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extends from the point in Reykjanes Peninsula to Thingvellir to Lake Myvatn. We also spent some time 'holding' up the bridge. #reykjanes Then we continued along searching for the planets (the geothermal plant in the area has a sun and then the planets are stretched in correct distance and size from that ... read more

Today started slow as we kept trying to see the midnight sun and the moon last night. At 12:45am you could barely see the sunset as the fog had moved in on all sides except the Northwest. We tried again at 2am for sunrise. At that point Judith didn't even get Emma up as the moon and sun were no longer visible through the fog everywhere. Thus we left in fog... That just got denser as we drove the Ring Road towards Reyjavik. However as soon as we were through the moors the fog lifted and was gone. As we continued along we approached a farmstead called Hraunsnef that had maps (postcards) of local features that were mapped with descriptions and drawings showing the living areas for elves, dwarves, hidden people, and others. In the shop ... read more

We arrived in Iceland at 11:40pm and made it to the guest house with everyone in bed by 1:30am. Best way to describe the night is like 8pm in Salem during the summer with clouds all night. Eye mask and melatonin made the night well. Our guest house was built by the current owners' grandfather who was a fisherman in Gardur. Up and at 'em at 8:30am (4:30am east coast time). After a delicious bit of chocolate cake, tea, coffee, crackers and toast with jam or Nusica, we headed for the next stopping place - Kirkjubaejarklausfur. We took the southern route to Grindavik. Beautiful serene landscapes mostly devoid of trees. Volcanic rock and old lava flows spilled down the mountains to the north of our drive and the Atlantic crashed into cliffs to our south. We ... read more

Gratefully, the wind had changed overnight and the room was not as hot and stuffy as previously. The thing with sleeping in a dorms you never know who you are going to wake up with! It reminds me of a few occasions from my drunken youth. It being Sunday morning, I had the kitchen to myself as the rest of the guests must have been out later than I was. I spent a good half hour writing up yesterday’s blog but mistakenly hit the wrong button and lost everything. When will I ever learn to hit the SAVE button more frequently instead. I know the second draft is not the same as the first, with some details forgotten and new ones added. Better save what I have just written, just in case… There. Done. After a ... read more

After a too short sleep, I got up and looked out the panoramic window to see another dreary drizzly day. I am too used to getting up with the sun so when it is always light, it is hard to sleep for long. A great day to find an indoor activity. I had a light breakfast of yogurt and granola and a pain au chocolate. The yogurt was thick and creamy and the bread freshly baked. Still hard to stomach for $11. I guess this is a sign of what to expect as far as pricing. The exact opposite to travelling in Asia where getting there is the expensive part. I had a half price coupon for the Maritime museum so off I went. It was only a ten minute walk away. I missed it as ... read more
