Dear Blog Readers, I knew three things about Iceland before visiting: 1. It's bloody expensive 2. It has an unpronounceable volcano that exploded in 2010 meaning we 'annoyingly' had to extend our stay in the south of France by two weeks on holiday 3. Their football team puts ours to shame So I suppose it was time to find out more about this place. The flights were cheap (£200 for both of us) but forgot about getting a checked bag included...there gone £50. Number 1 above already coming to fruition. We landed in Keflavik just before midnight and found our hire car place (Green Motion) and soon settled into our Ford Fiesta which would become our second home for the next few days. Just outside the capital city, Reykjavik, sat our hotel (Kieunes) which we managed ... read more

Sunday morning we were up even earlier than usual & left in the dark to drive the scenic route to the airport which avoids Reykjavík. Although Vicky spent a while fixing her broken suitcase with duct tape (very expensive Icelandic duct tape!). We first headed south towards Þorlákshöfn then west along the coast to Grindavík then north past the famous Blue Lagoon towards Keflavík & the airport. We dropped off the car without any issues (the mouse thankfully having vacated after the first night) & as the shuttlebus didn’t seem forthcoming Vicky got a trolley for her broken case & we walked over to departures and checked in. As our flight was over an hour before Chavaunne’s we said goodbye before security. Sadly I couldn’t find any Ris Buff in duty free so had to but ... read more

Again up & out in the pre-dawn light to drive the Golden Circle… Or rather the Golden triangle as we missing out the Reykjavík half of the route. We decided to go around it anticlockwise in the hope that as most tour groups go clockwise we might miss at least some of the rush. We started by visiting Keriđ – a stunning red & sienna crater complete with green lagoon. Although we did accidentally drive past it but the gateway we turned in had Icelandic horses that came to say hello which was nice. There were a few other tourists around even this early but it was a beautiful, even though the sun was too low to shine down onto the lagoon. Oh we also stopped at view point to admire the sunrise over the river ... read more

Vicky stopped over at ours on Friday night so we could get up at 3:30am for Mark to drive us to Luton airport to check in at 5am. I got rather excited at seeing our Totternhoe Nature Reserve from the plane during take-off! A good tail wind meant we arrived at Keflavik International Airportjust after 8:30am. We met up with Chavaunne whose flight from America got in even earlier (she even saw the northern lights from her plane!). We picked up the hire car (Dacia Duster 4WD) & I got voted as first driver due to (a) having driven on the right before & (b) not being jetlagged! This meant I had to get us out of the airport then into the centre of Reykjavik & park in the car park by Hallgrímskirkja (the tallest church ... read more

We got up early, planning to leave the hotel by 8. We made it out at ten after, which I think is pretty good! We drove out of Reykjavik towards Thingvellir national park with wonderful sunny weather. Now, one thing to remember about Thingvellir national park (and some other attractions in Iceland) is that the entrance is free. Great. Parking, however, is not! Thingvellir national park is very interesting. First, it's where two tectonic plates meet (namely the European and American), leaving a large rift between them with lots of cracks and fissures. So there's loads of geological activity going on there. Cliffs, narrow gulleys, long, narrow lakes and more. We walked around a bit, Gilat, the kids and I took a longer walk to Silfra lake, where you can go scuba diving in the frigid ... read more

So, off we go to Iceland! Three generations of the Schatz family; Abi & Phillippa (AKA Granny & Grandpa), Ben & Gilat, and Tamar and Ethan. We got through the Ben Gurion airport smoothly and onto our gloriously purple WOW Airline to Keflavik. The plane was barely half full, so we could stretch out. Here's hoping it'll be like that on the return trip! The flight was uneventful, if long, and we were all excited to land in Iceland. We went through extremely rigorous security, much more than in Ben Gurion before the flight. Reason unknown. Eventually, after a surprizingly long hike, we got out of the airport. Our shuttle driver was waiting for us and took us to the Lagoon car rental office. Our Kia Sorento was all prepared and waiting for us. We packed ... read more

This entry needs a little background……in 2012 we were fortunate enough to spend more than two weeks in Iceland. Iceland is an amazing country that offers lava fields, glaciers, waterfalls, hot springs, tundra and all sorts of geological wonders. We think of it with fond, fond memories and dreamed of going back. It is a truly an incredibly unique spot in the world and frankly….there is no other place quite like it. When sitting with friends who ask what is our favorite country we visited, Iceland is one of the countries at the top of our list. Family and friends often ask why we don’t return to some of these wonderful locations that we have experienced and told them about…. our standard answer has been…… there is a big world out there and we want to ... read more

The first day is always the most hectic day. Rush, rush, rush just to have hurried only to wait. I love traveling for travel's sake, but all the security protocols and corporate protocols with airlines makes it rather miserable, but I toughed it out. Made it to Iceland where I have a 2.5 hour layover which is unforutnaly not enough to venture out and see anything so in the airport I sit have a Gull (an Icelandic beer because what more appropriate). So from here on to Copenhagen, Denmark. I'll be nice to get to my destination, but the space between in my favorite. Ciao for now... read more

Our quick but beautiful layover in Iceland. We rented a car and travelled to Reykjavik where we found the most delicious croissant and espresso to be found anywhere at Braud and co. So delicious! We then drove through lava fields and moss covered craggy rocks and steaming geysers to find the lost lagoon. Hot springs in a farm field with cool rain. Please go here if you ever get a chance. So beautiful. Beautiful country and people. 48+ hours awake is tough, tough, tough, but so worth it.... read more

This all started as one of us was sitting in school last year and said casually, "This kind of thing would never happen in Finland." It was a small comment, but it had a life of its own. Fast-forward 6 months and here we are: Sam, Jennifer, Kat and Lyn - 4 American girls - off on an adventure well beyond Finland. We start with Iceland on July 16th and then continue to Helisnki, Tallin, Stockholm, Bergen, Voss, Flam and Oslo. We'll keep you informed with photos and chatter as we travel lightly and laugh constantly. We will be quite the team. Keep an eye out!... read more
