Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Knossos Palace
Knossos Palace
This is what the facade of the Palace is thought to have looked like, colour and all.
Location: Aghios Nikolaos and Knossos Weather: Sunny, 27 °C Last tender trip into town for the cruise, it is nice to arrive in port by a boat rather than just walking down a gang way - adds some excitement to the process. Aghios Nikolaos is a pretty port town, the shops circle the port and boy did I do some shopping! All throughout the cruise I have looked at the jewellery in the various ports visited - I have wanted to buy something but have not seen the right something. Well in Aghios Nikolaos I saw two items that I loved [View Full Entry]

Can you find the crater and the moussaka?
Three weeks roaming through the Greek islands and the Peloponnese is one cool way to end a trip through Europe. Greece is: * warm balmy nights and hot dry days * incredibly blue water * blue skies and no summer rains * outstanding sunsets * windmills and windy days * hot spanikopita (spinach pie) and cappuccino for breakfast * yummy home cooked Greek food always eaten al fresco * going to the restaurant kitchens to select your food * checking ferry schedules * catching ferries and watching ferries come and go * octopus drying [View Full Entry]

Location: Cruising in General Weather: Sunny, 27-34°C Cruising is the best way to travel! All the different locations without having to pack my bags and move onto a new location every night. The facilities on the ship are fantastic, the food is exceptional without being too much in terms of amount. I have noticed that the trend is to have more than one entree/dinner/dessert but I am very good at having just one! Trish you would be very happy to hear that I am working my way through the cocktail menu but I have realised that in order to have every [View Full Entry]

Skiathos - Skopelos - Alonnisos - Peristeri - Skantzoura We had just a few days to potter about before our sailing guests - Anne and Joe - arrived. So, having just fixed the electric motor on the anchor windlass, all was ready for them to join us. We set off from Skiathos to Loutraki on Skopelos in strong winds and with both sails reefed. This was when the stitching along the back edge and the bottom edge of the foresail decided to disintegrate. Nine summers of UV and it had had enough. Displaying our flapping bits of sail fabric we arrived [View Full Entry]

The Night Before Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
So we are done packing and just finishing up some last minute duties -- mainly transferring songs onto my IPOD to beat boredom on the long bus and ferry rides. I'll try to update this blog to the best I can, even though there is somebody telling me that it is a waste of time. [View Full Entry]

Athens and the Parthenon Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Hi Everyone! I have spent a week here in Athens. Before I got here, and even after I got here I heard from many fellow travelers that Athens was a miserable place to be for any length of time. I have to say that once an opinion has taken root in my head it is hard to shake it off, even if wasn't my own opinion. It is so easy to see negativity everywhere. The cars are loud, the people are intrusive, the streets are dirty, and lets not even talk about the heat. But I think my reaction to a [View Full Entry]

Arrival In Athens, Greece! Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
After leaving Los Angeles at 11:20 p.m. and arriving in New York at 8 in the morning, I waited at JFK until 5 p.m. where I departed for Athens. Flying all night on Olympic Airlines, I safely arrived in Greece at 10:30 a.m. My baggage arrived all in once piece, and I paid 35 euro for a taxi to my apartment in Athens. I live in the area known as Pangrati, and my apartment is about 2 blocks away from the CYA learning center. My apartment is great, I enjoy the gentlemen that I live with and right now we are [View Full Entry]

Cats at Paleokastritsa Monastery
Cats are everywhere in Greece, they appear to belong to no one yet everyone cares for them.
Location: Corfu Weather: Sunny, 33 °C Corfu is definitely somewhere I want to return to - this island is part of the Odyssey! The Paleokastrtsa Monastery was well worth the visit as it had some of the best icons I have seen - I have made a point of going into the Orthadox Churches while wandering around on my own as Mum said the icons in the churches are fantastic and she has not been wrong. I even brought a copy of the Mary icon as I thought it was so beautiful. Corfu has and had a very large English population [View Full Entry]

This temple was given as a gift to Olympia.
Location: Katakolon and Olympia Weather: Sunny, 34 °C I have a true appreciation of how students feel about listening and work when it is hot! Today I travelled to Olympia - site of the original Olympic games but while the guide was explaining things all I was trying to do was find some shade. It was a bit like the episode of the Simpsons told from the dog’s perspective, every time the humans spoke the dog heard random sounds - I was listening but not listening. The Museum at Olympia was good, the air conditioning made it so. Some of the [View Full Entry]
