Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Day 1: Long Way to Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Our taxi driver arrived on time at the house to pick Judy and me up. After verifying the destination was Dulles airport, he shot out of the neighborhood at warp six. He was a strange fellow as most cab drivers are these days. He seemed oblivious to the incessant chime reminding him to use his seatbelt. At first it was a little annoying but after a while, we wondered how long he could drive before finally breaking down and buckling up. It only took about 4 miles and tranquility ensued in our crown vic. Judy was backseat driving just as she [View Full Entry]

Hello, 9/26 - Morning of 9/26 we took a bus back up north to Athens. We were a little sad to leave our great setup in the beautiful town of Kardimylia. We arrived in Athens and found the city bus we needed pretty quickly. After taking a metro train to our intended area, we discovered the hostel no longer exists and no others were in that area. Back on the metro to the Acropolis area, we were sure to find places there. First place full, second as well, except for a little closet on the roof - i kid, but it [View Full Entry]

Even though only about 24 hours has passed since my last entry, it feels like we have packed an entire week's worth of activities into that time! Just before I left my room last night for the welcome reception, my dad texted me to say that there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Darn. We could have had the dinner outside after all, but we agreed that we felt pressured by the hotel to avoid the slim possibility of bad weather by having it inside. We realized that although for most people a little chill in the air and some small [View Full Entry]

The welcome reception and dinner inside - quite a nice room, but not as nice as the Acropolis view!

Lunch at Dionysos

Paros is a beautiful small fishing island. It has quaint cobbled streets that can be explored in a just a few hours. On arrival we were greeted by a lovel host at Pension Demitrios. We stayed in a lovely Pension (which is like a cross between a hostel, B&B and a small hotel...... After another guided tour of the island it was out to Dinner where Jen ate Tims choice of the fresh fish of the day which was served whole with eyeballs and all ahhhh! A quick word about Timmy boy... He is our guide-friend on this tour and he [View Full Entry]

Dining Out in Athens Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Yesterday afternoon, we met with our Greek host, ostensibly for only a few minutes in the lobby, but it was a meeting that turned into lunch at a small cafe-type place just across from the hotel in Constitution Square. I hadn't brought my sunglasses with me and it was a very bright and sunny day, reflecting so brilliantly off of the marble steps that I almost couldn't keep my eyes open. We sat at a tiny table and decided to have a bite to eat at this Eonikon Cafe, packed with Greeks and tourists so tightly that you felt as though [View Full Entry]

Jet lag does funny things to you. Wait, scratch that. Sleep deprivation does funny things to you. After a week where I only got one night of decent sleep, it was time to battle the dreaded jet lag. Actually, I shouldn't say dreaded. As long as I have the luxury of an extra day to sleep, I don't mind jet lag. It resets my sleep cycles, helps me to return to a normal sleeping schedule when I return home, and jerks me away from my night-owl habits because I'm too tired to keep awake. But it does funny things too. You'll [View Full Entry]

Kardamyli Europe » Greece » Pelopennese » Kalamata
Hello, 9/22 - 9/26 Ryan: One night in Tropea, Claire and I had a few drinks and decided that Greece sounded good. So that's it, our first train was at 6:50am the next morning and we arrived in Brindisi (on the West coast of Italy, port jump off point) at 6pm. We took four trains and one 15-hour ferry to Patras, Greece (about 28 hours total travel). We made it to the port and booked the ferry with 1/2 an hour to spare. We booked a room and Claire demolished more of Ken Follet's sequel to Pillars of the Earth. The [View Full Entry]

Whatever next? After Anne and Joe left, we started comedy of errors - or was it a tragedy. First there was the visit to the doctor when Kate’s eye swelled up. After 15 minutes she had some cream, tablets and a 150 euro bill. After a little disagreement, Kate calmly said “what I am going to do is say thank you, give you 50 euros and leave now”. And she did - she was spectacular! Then after a couple of nice days we planned our passage east across the Aegean, but by then the weather was against us so we had [View Full Entry]

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111 By far our highlight so far... An early start saw us set sail on the blue star ferries... destination one Mykonos. Arriving in the port a sea of white greeted us upon its shore with all the houses picture perfect. Staying at Paradise Beach Camping ground it was straight to the beach for some well deserved sun baking and swimming. First thing noted.... naked penis flapping in the wind... second thing noted nudie rudies running everywhere... third... they were all old.... hehe.... A few happy snaps later it was time to get ready f [View Full Entry]
