Potansiyele bak be abi.. Çok geçmeden do... read more

Europe » Greece » West Greece » Katakolo May 4th 2014

Today’s port is Katakolon in western Greece. This is the port for access to the site of Ancient Olympia and we had booked a transfer with Katakolon Express. These guys came well recommended online and were about a fifth of the price being charged by Holland America. The only thing is you have to wait a bit while they try to drum up extra business on the pier as everyone gets off the boat. About 45 minutes later we were on our way to Olympia. Everyone knows Greece has been hit pretty hard by the GFC and it shows in places. The shops at the pier are full of course but as you travel through the towns, shopfronts are mostly empty, car dealerships have no cars there and there are even quite a few houses or ... read more

Europe » Greece » West Greece » Katakolo October 24th 2013

We arrive in the small fishing village of Katakolon just before 10am. The main reason for coming here is it's proximity to the ancient site of Olympia where the first Olympics were held. Nothing like the Olympics we know today. Firstly they were Pan-Hellenic and not international, which is just as well as I am sure the Jamaicans were as fast back then as now. We decided that we would not do Olympia as after Dubrovnik, Santorini & Athens we were a bit tour weary. Instead we had a leisurely breakfast before going ashore to visit the small town. It was very small consisting of one street and one small waterfront pathway. However, this one street consisted of a variety of small and interesting shops. All kinds of gifts shops from the usual low cost tacky ... read more

Yia su, which means hello, all. Got woken this morning by the cellphone tone and got the news of the earthquake in Wellington. It sounds damn scary and we hope all our friends and rellies have escaped with no damage to their houses. It's times like these we wish we didn't have a pole house on an unstable hillside. We're leaving Paleros a day early as we have to get out of the apartment tomorrow. So we are taking another taxi to the port city of Igoumenitsa, spending a night there and catching a ferry to Corfu the next day. We've been able to add an extra day to the hotel ... read more

Yia Su all I keep forgetting to caption photos but they pretty much speak for themselves so I don't think that needs a big apology unlike my mea culpa over the typos. We've been in Paleros for three nights and I'm writing this on the 5th night just before I hit the sack. It's a problem writing these after we've been out to dinner as I find the thinking a bit blurred at times. It's Gavin's fault. The local red wine here is cheap; it seems to be mainly available in one litre plastic bottles for a couple of Euro so it's not surprising that we connoisseurs pick up on that pretty quickly. Hence my fumblings at times on the "keyboard". Like all good capitalists we hired a taxi from Athens to Paleros. 400 euros for ... read more
