As mentioned in the last blog entry we are now in Greece, but still have the goal of getting to our winter berthing place of Fethiye, Turkey. We have plenty of miles to go and it is now September 16th so we started our journey. We know that there are many wonderful places to explore in Greece, but this season we are “just passing through”. There were only a couple of places that we knew we had to make as intermediate goals on our way. With our having lived for 26 years near Ithaca, NY we decided that we needed to at least make a stop at the island of Itaka in Greece. Another goal would be the westernmost entrance to the Corinth Canal as there is a timing issue you ... read more

We got to Kioni in good time and so found a great spot on the town quay, with a fair bit of space for more boats. Kioni is a quaint little town with a lovely harbour. But, there is only space on the quay for about 25 boats - at a push! Well, by the end of the afternoon a whole load of boats had come in and 3 flotillas to boot! There were about 65 boats tucked in, or should I say SQUEEZED into every nook and cranny! The flotilla leaders were top n tailing some of their boats and there were loads rafted up together with lines to the rocks on the other side of the harbour. In the late afternoon we decided to have Fredo Cuppacinos at the cafe across the harbour. As ... read more

Day 60 I got to sleep in till 8am this morning! It felt SO good, but my body wasn’t use to it so I was up just before my alarm. I waited to use the washroom to wash up, then changed and packed for the day. I grilled onions with butter on the pan, for Isabelle and I to add to our leftover lunch from last night’s dinner; I sliced my pieces of lamb into bite-size pieces then added the onions into it. I packed some bread, a carrot and an apple with it for lunch and ate it on the bus. We met the group down at the docks at 9am, Hettie was our chaperon for the day because our prof was busy. Our first drive was about 10 minutes to the Tholos Tomb that ... read more

Week Two Monday to Friday Sept 21 to 25 We have had a couple of days in Lefkas for Sheila to return home via Athens and James and Elizabeth to join us for couple of weeks. We left Lefkas on Monday at noon after stocking up on supplies, getting fresh towels etc. After an hour going south along the Lefkas canal we headed for Meganisi and Spartakhori/ Port Spiglia. We had the best wind of the holiday so far with about 17 to 18 knot winds with the genoa part way out we had a lovely run down for about 3 hours before getting the motor going to head into the harbour. There was a certain amount of wind but the lazy lines meant we didn’t have to worry about the anchor in fairly close quarters. ... read more

I went here, to the Island of Odysseus, to walk to some mythic sites, hiking along the roads to the beach (pictured) where Odysseus supposedly landed at the end of his journey, but though it was pretty (again, the photo, but that is a misleading angle), it was full of lounge chairs and a bar that unsurprisingly exploited the said footnote. The 15 hour ferry left Greece from Patras, picked me up in Ithaka, and went to Ancona, Italy, where I took a train to Rome. The seas were rougher than normal and I was deathly ill, probably from the ice cream I had the night before, and then having to sprint around the mouth of the harbor to catch the boat in the late morning, so I splurged, switching from a space on the deck ... read more
