Today was one of the major activities of this vacation. We spent the day exploring some of the primary historical places in the Athens area. The weather wasn’t as good as we’ve had the previous several days, but it wasn’t bad either. We started with an early wake-up call and then went down to the hotel’s dining room for breakfast. We thought the booking had included breakfast but we weren’t certain. Turns out it was pre-paid in our room rate. We had bacon (English style) and eggs (scrambled), with juice, tea, pastries, and cheeses. There were some other choices too but we stuck to things which seemed pretty much like at home. Anyway, we headed to the lobby with full stomachs and we waited for our tour excursion to come pick us up – happened about ... read more

I didn’t know what to expect when we landed, nor did I have any considerations for what I really wanted to accomplish while in the capital city Athens felt similar to a tropical desert, but with many instances of brightly foliaged trees, bushes, and very active birds. It smelled tropical, likely due to the sea which you can see if you’re high enough in the city. Trees with wisteria-like purple blooms, bright pinks, magentas, reds, and then brown grass and sand and red stone. Trees ranged from large-trunked palms, to scrub (the common plant along the mountains), to some conifers along mountain basins. While riding the metro it was nice to see the European-style graffiti: brightly coloured with many intricate designs. I was always a fan of the graffiti in Italy, and had forgotten my affinity ... read more

Hello from Athens. This is from a hotel in Athens and not the floating hotel we’ve been staying in for the past 4 weeks. By now the Royal Princess is back at sea beginning a cruise back toward Barcelona and we are land-lovers again. When the alarm went off this morning we were happy to discover we could indeed get everything stashed in our remaining “carry luggage”. We went up to the Horizon Court for a final ship-board breakfast and the first person we saw was our usual dinner waiter Jesus. He quickly cleared a table for us and we went through the buffet to get our food. He brought us our drinks and kept asking if we wanted anything else, but we were quite content with all the food we had gathered already. Then our ... read more

Today we packed in as many sites in Athens as possible. We started off with the Acropolis. They're just about finished cleaning the Parthenon, and - wow! - it is just gleaming. Then downhill to the Agora, the old civic centre. Here there is one of the best-preserved temples in Greece, the Hephaistion. Fortunately for us temple-lovers it was turned into a Christian church early on, and so remained intact. Then a pair of museums: the Acropolis Museum, which contains all the sculpture found on the Acropolis (except for the tasty bits "borrowed" by Lord Elgin and others), then to the National Archaeological Museum which contains every other Classical masterpiece found in Greece (or so it seems). I kept running into marvellous works I've encountered before in books or lectures. We rushed through both museums; I'll ... read more

The flight from Copenhagen went smoothly - I was surprised there was no passport control on arrival. The wonders of the EU! I was driven to the hotel by a very chatty young Greek who told me of his adventures visiting Istanbul. Several good tips. The group met in the bar - there are 14 of us including the leader - and we boarded an enormous bus to drive out to Cape Sounion, the southernmost tip of Attica. There is a temple to Poseidon on the hilltop. Scenic as all get out. We stopped at a seafood restaurant on the way back. Huge quantities of fried calamari, shrimp and small fish, then a grilled whole fish. Back to the hotel, and I went straight to bed.... read more

For once the mammoth wasn’t up first and by the time he had tied his scarf and pretended to wash behind his ears Zoe and I were waiting at the door for him. Woolly says – Well I do like to look my best and having rubbed a sock behind my ears and removed some excess jam I hurried to catch up with the girls. A quick pit stop for breakfast and we set off to Syntagma Square for the truly unique changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The Evzones is the name given to several of the historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army, now days it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard. Prospective Evzones are initially identified at the Infantry Recru... read more

Woolly says – Having prised everyone out of there beds with only a few moans and groans which I choose to ignore we picked up our breakfast rations and headed for our second day on the city tour bus. Our ticket gave us a free day so it seemed only sensible to make the most of it. Hopping off at Syntagma Square and the home of the Presidents guards was a passing blur as we have that scheduled into tomorrows plan, our idea was to walk through the Botanical Gardens, we were denied. Police road blocks and guards blocked our way, I continued to trot along in the hope that eventually we would be able to make a right turn and get ourselves on track, this seemed to be somewhat of a problem. How our small ... read more

Saturday: We slept in … until 7:00 AM when we realized we had to be packed and have our bags out in front of our door for pickup at 9:00. We made the time and then checked out of the hotel and wandered the streets, homeless and alone! Actuyally we visited a replica of one of the temples – the colors were beautiful, vibrant and alive – and went to one of the biggest stores in Athens (Attica) and looked at everything we didn’t need. We did stop for a coffee at a nice street café and had a quick bite at a café on the main square. It was a little quiet as the transportation strike was still underway. Everyone who is responsible for driving or handling public transport was on holiday. We had no ... read more

Friday: John left early to take a last visit to the Acropolis, walking through the Plaka and Agoura and up the Sacred Way to the main entrance. Peggy relaxed and then visited the Acropolis Museum again to take in all the beauty. We met up late morning and walked back into the Plaka to find additional gifts for the family. Visited a nice jewelry store where Peggy got a little charm for her bracelet and chatted at length with the manager, Stavros, who we had met a few days ago. He and his family have been in business in Athens for 45 years, which puts it’s birth at the last visit Peggy had to Athens when she did her junior year abroad. The shop may have changed but the byzantine and Hellenistic designs have not. And ... read more

Woolly says – Up early I stood tapping my paw impatiently waiting for the women to sort themselves out, I had a great plan for the day and it was imperative that we got moving quickly, so many places and so little time! Having finally got everyone out of the room instead of heading in the direction I had planned we turned in the opposite direction.....STOP I shouted but having raced to catch them up it appeared that breakfast was going to be the first port of call.....well they should have said! It was only a brief stop but worthwhile and with tummies appeased Zoe and I happily followed our enthusiastic guide towards the Archaeological Museum. Woolly says – the building was impressive so goodness knows how wonderful it would be inside, I scurried up the ... read more
