Geo: 37.9795, 23.7162Got our cute selves out of the bed at 3:29am this morning. Yeah that is too damn early. But we had a flight at 6:55, and HP lost the argument with Bird that we didn't really need to arrive at the airport two hours before the flight (in the end, just like the TV show "father knows best", HP knew best). We were sitting at the gate over an hour before the flight.Pleasant one hour flight on Turkish Airlines where we were served breakfast. When was the last time any of us had a meal on a one hour flight in the U.S.? Located the subway, and after an hour, we arrived at our station "Acropolis". Yep, the real thing. Arriving toward the top of the subway, we noticed a number of statues that ... read more

Day 182 Monday 18th July 2016 – Athens Our hotel does not offer a laundry service but gave us directions to a laundromat which was roughly in the direction of our destination today the National Archaeological Museum. We decided not to take our dirty clothes for a walk just in case we could not find it or it was too expensive, we eventually found it and it was cheap, great we will air our dirty laundry tomorrow. Next door to the Laundromat is a Refugee service centre and there was a queue of about twenty men going into it, and this has been the only sign of the refugees in this city that we have seen. We actually expected to see lots of refugees on the streets here begging but we have only seen ... read more

Day 178 Thursday 14th July 2016 – Larnaca to Athens We have a 1.00pm flight today so it is a nice easy start to the day, we had breakfast in the apartment and then packed and got a taxi at 10.30am to the airport. As we arrived we saw three dogs entering the airport and at first glance we thought sniffer dogs then looked at the people with them and they were tourist. It turned out they were dogs from the Nicosia Dog Shelter going to new homes, they were being put into cages in the terminal for their flights, first time we have seen dogs lining up for a flight. This is a quick flight to Athens only 1.5 hours making sure we got stamped in, we have been to Athens twice before ... read more

I see I have been slacking again on the blog front - sorry about that! Sunday I finally got to ride a Greek train, and it was a great trip. I was in a six-seat compartment - very old-fashioned, but a brand new carriage. The trip was long because the train really slowed down when it was winding its way through a couple of ranges of hills. I didn't mind at all because the scenery was fantastic. At one point we were passing through deeply-eroded limestone with plunging gorges and cross-capped pinnacles. Yesterday was taken up by practical matters, primarily getting the third rabies jab. True to form this proved to involve travelling to two widely-separated places and spending a lot of time waiting. Anyway, it's done. Number 4 will happen in Germany and it will ... read more

We split up today. Kevin stayed Round Piraeus and I took a Hop on Hop Off bus tour of Athens. It was good to have a look around having last been in Athens in 1979. It was disappointing to see graffiti everywhere and the scaffolding around the Parthenon. So glad that I saw it all those years ago. I got off and had a walk around the markets. Bought some delicious pistachios and then went into the fish market. Pleased to note that it did not smell. Fresh produce everywhere. The displays by the vendors were interesting with the fish bent in the middle and displayed "like soldiers" as one of the vendors explained to me. Aftr a walk around the surroundings streets I got back on the bus and eventually the boat. Piraeus. Kevin headed ... read more

Today marks the official end of our vacation as we are going home. It has been a good trip and we’ve had a lot of fun, but we are ready to come home again. We had practically everything packed last night so we didn’t have a lot of those tasks left to perform this morning. The trick was getting it into suitcases so they did not exceed 50 pounds each. Anyway, we left a 4:30 wake-up call with the hotel and had a 5:00 cab arriving to take us to the airport. With 8 time zones involved, that means we got up at 8:30 Monday night. We quickly got dressed and finished loading the last things in the suitcases, weighing the bag after each item to see if we could still add something else. When our ... read more

On Monday we had a long day touring Delphi and we had a busy evening preparing to depart the next morning, so there wasn’t time to properly describe that interesting day. Now we can give you an update about what we saw and what we did. We had booked both our Greece tours over the internet a few months before the cruise. We had used the Viator web site because we have dealt with them before and have been happy. Here in Greece the delivery company is actually called “Chatours”, but they are essentially a local branch and they performed to the same standards. Our tour was scheduled to pick us up at our hotel at 7:50. That had been one of several mandatory criteria we had for selecting a hotel in the first place. Anyway, ... read more

Today was one of the major activities of this vacation. We spent the day exploring some of the primary historical places in the Athens area. The weather wasn’t as good as we’ve had the previous several days, but it wasn’t bad either. We started with an early wake-up call and then went down to the hotel’s dining room for breakfast. We thought the booking had included breakfast but we weren’t certain. Turns out it was pre-paid in our room rate. We had bacon (English style) and eggs (scrambled), with juice, tea, pastries, and cheeses. There were some other choices too but we stuck to things which seemed pretty much like at home. Anyway, we headed to the lobby with full stomachs and we waited for our tour excursion to come pick us up – happened about ... read more

I didn’t know what to expect when we landed, nor did I have any considerations for what I really wanted to accomplish while in the capital city Athens felt similar to a tropical desert, but with many instances of brightly foliaged trees, bushes, and very active birds. It smelled tropical, likely due to the sea which you can see if you’re high enough in the city. Trees with wisteria-like purple blooms, bright pinks, magentas, reds, and then brown grass and sand and red stone. Trees ranged from large-trunked palms, to scrub (the common plant along the mountains), to some conifers along mountain basins. While riding the metro it was nice to see the European-style graffiti: brightly coloured with many intricate designs. I was always a fan of the graffiti in Italy, and had forgotten my affinity ... read more
