We made it! It has been way too long since I've been able to hop the pond and see some international sites, so I am very happy to be visiting Greece with my cousin Christina. We will be sticking primarily to the interior and Athens on this week-long trip and I'll post pics as I can. For our first day off the plan we got into our hotel after a long ride from the airport. Because I couldn't travel for so long we splurged on a taxi vs using the local bus and I'm glad we did as we got to the see the city, the olive trees, and a bit of how traffic works here (it isn't too terrible, really). We are jet lagged for sure, but got out for a long walk, some dinner, ... read more

We finally have a lot of photos and several stories to share, so this will be a longer-than-usual post. Maggie arrived in Pireaus, Greece, near Athens, on Tuesday, January 11, though they did not disembark until the next day, January 12. The first leg of the ship's journey was filled with ups and downs. On the positive side, she's meeting all kinds of shipmates and making lots of friends - Diego, Victor, Colby, Lyzette, Madeline, Caroline, Salma, Alex...and the list goes on. She's also getting to know the crew, and they are getting to know her as well. She's got crew friends on her hall, in the dining rooms, on the deck, etc. She loves that they call her by name and she's working hard to get to know all their names as well. She's getting ... read more

Most of us think about feta when it comes to Greek cheese. And it is Greece's most popular cheese. According to Greek myth, Aristaeus, the son of Apollo, learned how to make cheese from the nymphs, and later taught mere mortals the gift of cheese making. But we do know that Greek cheese has been around since the 8th century BC. Cheese remains an integral part of Greek diet and cuisine. Nearly every meal, from morning to night, and from appetizer to dessert may contain cheese, or at least some dairy. Greece is always near the top of per capita cheese consumption around the world. Feta has, as most of you already know, a tangy and salty taste, and is a protected designation of origin (POD) product. It is mostly ... read more

One of the few countries in Europe I have not visited is Greece. I have not really avoided it per se, as it was on my radar back on my first trip to Europe. But fate intervened, and I was called home due to the untimely death of my Father. In fact, I was going to meet a friend there, and travel around the country and a few of the islands. So, fast forward to today, Greece is a much different place. Economic problems, mostly the result of outsized inflation, pensions, and debt have made it the weak link of the European Union, and maybe the entire world! What better time than July, when the country is slowly and carefully reopening? Greece is the southernmost country in the Balkan Peninsula. The country is defined by its ... read more

Athens 22 to 25 June 2013 After a 5 hour ferry trip on the fast Sea Jet from Santorini, we arrived in Rafina (the smaller port of Athens) to find our Camper safe and sound. We paid 96 euros for 8 days of parking fees and in another hour we arrived at Camping Athens where we stayed for 3 nights. Athens has been populated for 7000 years so it’s a city of mixed standards. Unfortunately there is graffiti everywhere. The traffic is frantic on work days but we also experienced better traffic on Sunday and the public holiday on Monday. All 3 days we were in Athens it was 35-38 degrees and ‘cooled’ down to 23 at night. It’s reasonably dry heat. We hung our wet clothes out at night and they were bone-dry in the ... read more

Kah-lee-MEH-rah (good morning), Before I begin to tell you where I have been, let me explain where I am now. My dear friend Hassan is curled up next to the space heater that our host family has provided. He has kindly asked me to toss him a pillow and in my nature I have chosen the kitchiest option our flat could provide - an enormous red, heart shaped "I love you" pillow whose origins we cannot guess. The redness creates a strong contrast to the gray, black and white shades that adorn the rest of our temporary home. Come to think of it, as I have woven myself through the Athenian streets in these past few days, the whole color scheme has been that of a black & white movie. I think the local description for ... read more

After a few hours in business class on our ferry from Naxos, we arrived at the port of Piraeus, the central harbour of Athens! We got off the ferry and found out way to the taxi rank to get to our hotel. After explaining where we wanted to go and having several drivers simply walk away, we had a man tell us we could walk there in 5 minutes. I think they must have walked off because they didn't want the crappy fare but no need to be rude about it! So with that we grabbed our bags and kicked my phones GPS into gear and set off up the street. About 25 minutes and 10 streets later we arrived at our hotel, Faros II. This hotel was great, and the staff were really friendly. We ... read more
