Crazy weekend. I want to reenact it all for you, but I have to read 'Lola the Detective' for class tomorrow. Friday I bit the bullet and joined the gym. I knew it was a mistake the second I walked out of the office and into the gym. It reeked of sweat and the treadmill is so old that when I run, the belt grabs on the bottom and i actually take a step forward. It warms after a while though so I'll make it work. Also, a lot of the gyms around here train wrestlers so the only floor work I can do is on a matt that was like the mats for the wresters in high school, only they are taped to the ground and I'm sure rarely get cleaned. ANYWAY, its my ... read more

From a wet and Windy YUK to the southern tip of Europe, which was as wet and windy!! After the usual mad dash to organise the 100 things that got left to the last minute we made it to the ferry at Newhaven on the south coast of Mud Island on a miserable March night, howling half a gale and raining, we thought it can only get warmer the further south we go....not quite, but a good hope being as we were going to Africa!! A bit of background is that I have never been to North Africa (the Ugandan-Sudan border at Kidepo Valley National Park is the most Northern point I have actually travelled to...touching down at airports doesn't count!) and my brother hasn't ever been to any part of Africa (despite trying to ... read more

Whew what a long bus ride today. Luke and I got up in the dark. Its dark here at 8:00 in the morning. We found the bus station and managed to find a bus to the tip of Spain. From there we actually walked into Gibraltar. You have to go through a custom area and across the small airport to get out the the 'rock'. Its pretty wild to go from a Spanish speaking area to an English speaking one. Everything is pounds and british food etc. The main reason for coming was to see the apes or barbary monkeys, that live on the upper rock. We hoped to catch the cable car going up but it was closed due to high winds. Instead we walked..... oh yeah up hill.....around windy roads... with cars honking at ... read more

Just don´t go there! Its the first wrong recommendation Ive found in the Lonely planet guide. The hotel is really a rooming house. Our room was right over the reception-bar area where the tv sits up high against the floor boards so in our room we listened to the TV show until 12am at loud volume. Since there is an open middle corridor the sounds bang off the walls and you can hear people sneeze. Thats not that bad but next door was a woman with a toddler and a baby. At 4 am the baby started crying and didn´t stop until 8 am. I even knocked on the door because a screaming .. and I mean full volume infant screaming should wake up the adult in the room right? Either the 'adult' wasn´t in the ... read more

Hello from Marbella, Spain! Brad, Janie, Greg and I are here for a few days, enjoying the Spanish Riviera. All the vegetation is the same as in Mesa, just healthier and bigger. Maybe that's what it's supposed to look like at home! We drove to Gibraltar today, after sleeping 12 solid hours to overcome the jet-lag (kinda worked, kinda didn't). We had the greatest cab driver, a Gibraltar native named Douglas. He drove us all around the island, telling us stories of Gibraltar's history and what it was like to grow up there. We loved him , and he was worth every penny (or pence, you might say)! The weather was cloudy, and we couldn't see Africa, but we hope to get there in a few days. I think my favorite part was the macaques. They ... read more

The Rock of Gibraltar was once one of the Pillars of Hercules and was an important military stronghold for centuries as it guarded the entrance to the Mediterranean. Traveling to the border of the Spanish Frontier, we'll cross the airfield and have an excellent view of the Rock. You'll also see the Cross of Sacrifice as you drive across the airfield. We'll visit St. Michael's Cave, where you'll have time to explore on your own, the unusual stalagmite and stalactite formations. The small concert hall inside the caves is well known for its acoustical qualities, which you will enjoy as classical music drifts through the huge cavern. At the Apes' Den, home of the famous Barbary Apes, we'll see these unique creatures, which were thought to arrive on the Iberian Peninsula from North Africa. As we ... read more

Another dark and gloomy day. Who says that its always sun shining in Spain. We thought we would try to make the most of it. We headed out about 10:00 and drove down the windy coast. The coast around Tarif is very popular for windsurfers and kite flying as it is known as the windiest part of Spain. Today however the wind was calm, and the rain fierce. Steve drove white knuckled most of the way. We arrived in Gibraltar with a sense of relieve and did what most people do once they cross into the UK, and walked across the airport runway into the town of Gibraltar. Gibraltar is a very quirky town with its mix of African, Spanish and British residents. Gibraltar must also be known for having the most Duty Free Shops in ... read more

We had an overnight stay in Barcelona where we enjoyed Las Ramblas in all its glory. So so many people and street performers everywhere! In the morning we jumped on the open topped bus and had a tour round this fantastic city with the only downside the searing heat with no cover at all. Next stop was a place called Villefranche in the south of France. We jumped on the train for the short journey to Monte Carlo. One word to describe this place.....EXPENSIVE! Have a look at the pictures of Kelly in her Red Ferrari, don't you ever say I am not good to her. I did want to buy her this car but the Captain refused to take it back on the ship!!!... read more
