Short drive today from one town / one campsite to another. We didn’t rush to leave but still arrived at our campsite, Alte Waldmuhle in Wertingerode by 11am. Weather glorious Reason for visiting this town is to take a ride on the Harz mountain steam railway. Kisbee was excited to be taking another trip so soon and we drove into town and eventually found the station, for some reason not where the Tomtom or Google maps seemed to think it should be. We booked our tickets for tomorrow to go to the top of the mountain, Brocken, and back ..€41 each but sure it will be worth it. We had a wander round the station as one of the steam trains was in. This is a regular scheduled timetable which goes all round the mountains. Our ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony-Anhalt » Arendsee September 29th 2016

Checked out of the hotel and back on the road again. Had some time before our appointment so thought we would check out Arendsee on the way. Nice little town right on a lake. We got to the mill just as a couple of people from the Muhle Society turned up. It was pretty hard with communication as their English was as good as our German. They went and got Bernhard Sasse who knew a little bit of English. He said he met Bernard when he first came over and made the mill known to the family back in NZ. They opened up the mill and got it working to show us how it all worked. It certainly shakes, rattles and rolls. Next thing, there were a few more people turned up and also a reporter ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony-Anhalt » Salzwedel September 28th 2016

Salzwedel, a very pretty, very old town. This still has its city gates and parts of the city wall still intact with streams running around it like a moat. We went to find the Dassler windmill in Meseberg (about 60kms from Salzwedel). Didn't think to look at the Sat Nav while driving around Meseberg, because once we found where it was and were driving towards it, it was showing on the Sat Nav as Muhle......duh! As it's listed on the historical places, it has an address. Spent quite a bit of time wondering around taking pictures. Went back to Salzwedel and tried to find out from our hosts if it was possible to phone Bernhard Sasse as his name and phone number was on the plaque outside the windmill. They don't speak much English but they ... read more

We arrived in Germany early yesterday morning after a night flight and after assorted trials and tribulations in Frankfurt Airport...you gave away our rental car because our flight was an hour late?? and circling the airport 3 times in the car we finally got because we couldnt get back to Hertz to get a gps because Rita couldnt get the verizon international plan to work on her phone (and who would think to bring a paper map or handwritten directions??) By 10:30 we found Meir's hotel and the 3 of us were on the road to Weimar, about a 2 hour drive north. We checked in to a small Pension and decided to dive right in to the purpose of this trip and go to the museum and grounds of Buchenwald Concentration Camp. The ride up ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony-Anhalt » Langenstein July 4th 2016

I've already gotten behind in writing. I'm sharing our experience visiting the Memorial at Langenstein Zweiberge 2 days ago. My father was here from 2/17/45 until the end of the war. It was a sub camp of Buchenwald, more than 2 hours north of Weimar. This small camp, 2000 inmates, was working to create a weapons production site under the ground by digging tunnels into the mountain. Once some years ago I learned that my father had been 'liberated' from this place I ddecide I would come here if anything was left to see. Some lucky googling got me in touch with the new director of the memorial and we had an appointment to meet with him. After a 3+hour ride that included blocked roads and getting lost numerous times (Google maps is definitely not updated ... read more

Europe » Germany » Saxony-Anhalt » Eisleben December 28th 2014

Europe » Germany » Saxony-Anhalt » Lutherstadt Wittenberg September 22nd 2014

From Berlin to Koln 19 to 21 September 2014 Driving out of Berlin with showery rain we drove south on the A115 and then on a secondary road towards Lutherstadt Wittenberg, a UNESCO World Heritage town. Thus area was where Martin Luther joined the local monastery and contributed much towards developing the region in the 1400s such as starting a school for all children, building several churches, expanding the monastery ans generally improving the lives of others. We later visited the town, Eisleben in which he was born and died. He traveled extensively throughout his adult life. His father was a copper miner. As we walked around Lutherstadt Wittenberg, we noticed extensive renovation to many of the buildings, but the notable one was the Castle Church which was massive. We couldn't go in there as they ... read more

It was sad saying Auf Wiedersehen to Berlin, but fortunatly in German that expressing means "till next time". The ICE to Lutherstadt was not too bad at all, just 40 mintutes. Tomorrow I am off to the once again growing city of Dresden. The city here looks like everything is being built, the castle church is being fixed up still, the church is being fixed up, Luthers house as well is being fixed up. The reason is in 2017 the 500th anniversery of the Reformation will be happening thus the work needs to be done early. Looking on the outside of the church it is understandable. Oddly enough, until 1993 the Soviets had a "western" outpost here in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (it is important to know the difference between "Wittenberg" and "Lutherstadt Wittenberg"). Bus to Berlin 1pm June 27 2014 There is one more thing to recommend at Quedlinberg and that is the Cheesecake (kasekurchen) shop below the castle. We missed it yesterday having arrived just after 6pm closing. We there today for its opening at 10am. They kindly allowed us two half slices which in truth was ample. There was a kaleidoscope of flavours supplemented by new cheesecakes being cooked in the entrance. They were neatly packed for us and became our incentive for getting to the bus stop. Our bags are no lighter and the thought of cheesecake spurred us on. Umm it was good. If you ever get to Quedlinburg I recommend you indulge.... read more
