I've mentioned it a few times on this blog but I really do have football to thank for introducing me to many of the travel destinations that I've visited in my time. The Champions League in the early 2000s for example, is what brought La Coruñato my attention; and a few years prior, the German city of Rostock was introduced into my consciousness from playing FIFA 98. Over the years, I then learned that the historic maritime city of Rostock was part of the medieval Hanseatic League and was an important port city back in the day; indeed the port is still the lifeblood of the city in modern times. I had also heard that it was quite a pleasant place. It was never really a priority to visit however; until Britta and I decided to ... read more

Back when the Cold War was raging and JFK came to the town divided by a wall and announced, “Ich bin ein Berliner” we all knew what he meant, claiming that our spirit was with theirs. The translation however was closer to “I am a jelly donut.” We arrived in Warnemunde and had a long day ahead of us. But Sharon decided to jettison me and make me take the one-way three hour train ride to Berlin alone. The Showroom was packed when I arrived. I received a “D” for my train car, and a Yellow-8 sticker for my bus once I get to Berlin. I had trouble seeing what my sticker was, since I couldn’t look at Sharon’s and she wasn’t there to look at mine. I got a seat by a window on the ... read more

Just to add a different dimension to this blog, German has its fair share of comical sounding words so from time to time I'll share my favourite ones with you. Today's German comedy word: Knoblauch = garlic 30.08.2015. The day of embarkation. It is also our wedding anniversary. It was grey, overcast with that threat of a down pour. Can I just clarify that that last statement has nothing to do with it being our anniversary. I was just providing an update on the day's weather!! It is also our good friends Donny and Marie's Ruby wedding anniversary so congratulation to you both where ever you are in the world! Our train to Warnemunde was at 09:44. The street to the train station which yesterday had been a hive of activity and business was strangely quiet. ... read more

Helloooo!!! I have finally managed to get onto a computer here. It took me ages to organise a time where I could get an internet card & write my first message from another country! Well, it's been a busy week with drills, inductions, getting lost etc etc. The first day was a bit of a blur with all the info I had to take in. I was given what has to be the hardest 'crew station position' ever! We all have one on board & have to go to it before going to the muster stations where all the passengers would gather in an emergancy. I got lost of course & walked the ship 5 times, & even then officers who tried to help me didn't know where it was! Needless to say my friend Vinnie ... read more

So, Nikki had an awesome opportunity to go on a European cruise for practically nothing (except her plane ticket to England, where the ship left from). Her best friend since she was like 6 years old, Alyssa, works with her husband for Norwegian Cruise Lines. The cruise left out of Dover, England and spent 12 days visiting all of the capitals along the Baltic. The best part is that Germany was one of her stops! It was technically listed as Berlin, but she actually came into port in Warnemunde, about 2 hours north of Berlin. According to the GPS it was a 6 hour drive from Mannheim to Warnemunde. We couldn't find anyplace in town that was affordable so we ended up staying in Lubeck, which was along the way, a little over an hour from ... read more
