January 1 - 4 I spent much of New Year's Day on an ICE train and we topped out at 251 km per hour. I spent the last few days of my break with Inna, who worked at camp with me this summer, and her husband Alex in the small town of Hermansburg. It was a really relaxing time which was really nice. On the 2nd we went into Celle which was a cute little town with a lot of really old buildings. What is really cool about the buildings is that they were all decorated and many had a Bible verse as well as the date that they were built painted on them. On the third we took a very cold, long walk to Muden for tea. It was like 10 km round trip and ... read more

What a wonderful way to end an 18 month European adventure...... Christmas Eve bought an abundance of excitement and German Culture. With a lonesome flight from Belfast to Hanover without my trusty travel companion Mimi by my side - we were quickly reunited at Braunschweig train station before heading off to the family home in Wolfenbuttel, with Mimi's mum Annette, Dad Hartmut, Uncle Klaus, Aunty and Cousin Matthias. A little sin absolution, with a traditional Christmas Eve service in a stunning old church, which was all in German and most interesting. Back home for one of my favourite experiences with a fantasy of real candles sprinkled throughout the Christmas tree being light for our evening of singing Christmas carols and opening presents. Not to mention my reborn love for Marzipan and chocolate........ The German hospitality of ... read more

We arrived in Hannover on the 18th after four days of cycling on the Fulda and Weser Rivers from Kassel to Hamlyn and over the Oldenberg to Hannover. We are staying with Andreas S in Hannover whom Ray met during his time here during Expo 2000. We meet up with Andreas in Hamlyn who cycles with us to Hannover. En route to Hannover we lunch at a Waldhotel named Holzmuehle - a hotel in the forest named woodmill, visit a museum in Coppenbruegge, and two cloisters, one with a broad view of the area south of Hannover. ... read more

Dawn Writes: We spent the morning recovering from the German/Irish karaoke fiasco of 2007 and then spent the afternoon shopping. Sarah also took me to get my nose pierced which seemed like a good thing to do on vacation until Sarah translated for me that there was the remotest of possibilities that my face might become paralyzed. Well I’m known for being a risk taker (hee he) so I did it anyway. My face is fine, the right half just doesn’t move anymore. Afterwards, we were off to Sarah’s parents to meet her family. We were of course offered more German beer which we were too polite to decline. After some small talk, beer and pleasantries, out came the Ouzo (the European equivalent of Zambooka). I don’t know how many bottles we went through but I’ll ... read more

Dawn Writes: We put our annoying tourist shoes back on and Erik took us to Celle, a beautiful old small town about 40 minutes from Hannover. I spent the day taking pictures of Sean and Erik taking pictures and they didn’t let me go into a single shoe store! Bastards! And of course we had more food and more beer! Later that evening back in Hannover Erik and Sarah took us to their favourite Irish bar for some German karaoke and Irish beer. Erik and Sarah, or as they’re known here Frank Sinatra and Celine Dion, had no problem karaoking (I don’t know how to spell that) but Sean and I would be needing a lot of liquid courage… which of course was in no short supply. We had way too much to drink and at ... read more

This is our last day on the Weser and as advertised it is the prettiest. During a stop in Bodenweder, a gentleman who turned 71 this week, talks to us about the town, the cycle route along the Weser, the town's history as the home of Baron Muenchhausen (of which there are many stories/legends of which he tells us some) and of his experiences as a child during the war and as town mayor. He also is the retired pharmacist of the pharmacy named Muenchhausen as it stands in front of the Baron Muenchhausen fountain. ... read more

Dawn Writes: We left London to fly to Hannover. Wish we had more time to spend in London, we didn’t get a chance to see everything we wanted to. Had lots of fun lugging our luggage (our new cheap luggage) through the London train system. I look forward to my next opportunity to do that again! Had a pretty uneventful flight which is a good thing, I guess. Arrived at the Hannover airport where Erik (Sean’s brother) and Sarah (Erik’s girlfriend) were waiting to greet us. We made a quick stop at the sex shop located in the airport and we were good to go! OK we didn’t really, but we could have because it’s right there in the airport. It must be for the tourists who are too shy to bring their toys through customs??!! ... read more
