So we made it to Germany in one piece. Thus far we have enjoyed some banana hefeweizen beer and some bratwurst. We also visited the Schloss Heidelberg castle in 36 degree sunshine!...All preparation for the evaporation of Corey and Andrea in the Egyptian heat tomorrow. Of special note, we visited, of all things, a Pharmacy Museum at the castle. It was a surprisingly large museum and pretty cool. Andrea called it "the single most meaningful experience" of her life. I can only assume that meeting yours truly was the second... Today we are headed to the Rheine River to do whatever Matt deems to be worthy of a first trip to Germany. Leaving Afghanistan is somewhat of an Odyssey that can take several days. The 6 hour Lufthansa flight was awful. I had waited too long to check in online and when I did there were very few seats left, none on an aisle or window, so I was sandwiched in the middle row in between 2 American gentleman with absolutely no sense of personal space. Both felt that the armrests were their own personal property and used them as if they were sitting in a lazy boy chair. Both also slept somehow for most of the flight.
