My 1 Euro Pıcture
You would not pay a euro aka 1.28 USD for thıs...I am a sucker Part of Day One
I finally flew on the famous Ryanair Airline where my flight was a penny and with taxes totaled $30 from London to Berlin. My flight was at 6:25 am and public transport doesn't open before 5 am. My friend Drew was supposed to catch a flight to Lisbon, Portugal and got to the airport early with check in 2 hours prior to boarding and gates closing 40 minutes prior. He waited in a long queue and then they cut him off saying that there wasnt enought time to get everyone on the flight. Sooo I "slept" at the airport all night it was horrid, I made sure to sleep next to the Ryanair desks and clamor to the line at 3:30 vs 4:25 when it opened. Too bad i slept through my alarm or it didn't work or something....cause I woke up at 4ish and freaked out and then didn't see anyone in line.... and then I looked on the board and they changed the check in to the other side of the desks. I look on the other side and there are hundreds of people in line...naturally i get into the wrong line, discover my mistake
Vıva Brasil!!
Football ıs nuts ın Berlin and race to my right line which luckily was shorter than the rest....
Day One
I get off the plane and then BOOM World Cup fever....I grabbed a train from the airport to my host Gabrielle's place, he wasn't home so I started to wander around the city tried and aimlessly. I took the train to the eastern side of Berlin to see the Berlin Wall museum which dumped me off in the middle of nowhere in a sketchy part of town. I will not lie, I was tired and frustrated from a lack of sleep by this time and a man giving me creepy looks didn't help. I started tearing up when finally I made it to the Berlin Wall which did not impress me, it actually scared me. The housing around the area are rundown communitst buildings, everything is torn up, and there are empty lots everywhere. I finally headed back to my new CS hosts house whose an italian guy named Gabrielle. His apartment was awesome and he gave me dinner on his balcony... automatically my day became better.
Day Two
In Berlin this company offers free walking tours throughout the city, after
Breakfast Wıth Gabrıele
Thıs guy ıs so dedıcated to Couchsurfıng travelling on my own I figured this would be a great way to interact with English speaking people. We walked all over the city and learned about the history. We went to the spot where Hitler killed himself and were invited to dance on his deathsite...imagine a whole tour group doing that! I hope we don't go to hell for doing that, I better redeem myself at the nearest catholic church.
We also learned about the buildings in Berlin which are random mix of new and old. After WWII the city didn't have any money left to rebuild itself. Many of the older buildings you see in the city have bullet holes in them still. Soon after the end of the War...the Berlin Wall went up and the communists marched on in the city, they built huge ugly buildings next to the older buildings. The wall finally came down in 1989 but the city is still rebuilding itself and have just now made strides in becoming a new Berlin. But the whole city should pretty much be wrapped in 'Under Construction' tape.
Day Three
I watched a World Cup Match today in a park which the city calls FanMile. Literally a mile long stretch with four megatrons to watch the game as well as activities and food. Brazil versus Ghana... if you didn't know who was playing that day all you would have to do was look outside your window and you would see jerseys, paint and or flags decorating buildings, bodies, anything that a logo could ever be attached to in support of a team. Brazil won, the drunken fans were going buckwild with singing and dancing and etc. I think I'm becoming hooked to football.
Day Four
I ate breakfast with my host Gabrielle and he had to leave early so this was my last time seeing him. He gave me the European Air Kiss...so fabulous I could totally get used to this.... I went to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum. I wanted to take a picture outside next to the checkpoint station. There was a woman holding an american flag with the full on military regalia from the sixties. She charged me one euro to take a picture with her. So dumb because it was a german woman and I had to pay to take a picture with someone playing dressup with clothes from my own country...I really wanted to whip out my passport and see if I could get a free pic for being american....
Next up is Innsbruck and Vienna Austria!
