Ever since I knew that I could spend a year in Europe as part of my degree, I'd decided that it was something I wanted to do. All of the courses I applied for involved me spending a year elsewhere, so surely with all this preparation, I would be ready for whatever would be thrown at me. Well 4 years down the line since I started looking at universities, I'm finally doing my year in Europe and was I fully prepared for everything in store? No, to be honest. Last December was when everything actually started. My supervisor emailed the contact at Julius-Maximilians Universitaet Wuerzburg, where I had decided to go, after saying I definitely wanted to do the year in Europe. Not expecting a reply quickly, just within two days, I'd had a reply saying ... read more

The Zentrum für Sprach made our marks for the Sprachkurse available to us last Monday. I hadn't been in any real hurry to go over and pick them up, partly because I already knew I had passed, but mostly because I was afraid that when I went, I would have to interact with the Zentrum staff in German and they would inevitably realize what a huge mistake they had made passing me and how they would rescind my Schein (pronounced "shine"). What finally got me to go over takes a little explaining. In truth, I had been craving the Schein for a long time. I really really wanted that Schein. Of course, from a strictly functional standpoint, the Schein sits as proof that I took the course and guarantees me the transfer credits when I get ... read more

Sunday, October 05, 2008 We have had only spotty internet access because of all the low bridges we have to go under. They have to clear the top deck of everything and lower all the antennas. Since the internet connection to the ship is wireless, we have no connection when the antennas are down. This will go out sometime. The ship is very comfortable and brand new. It entered service April of this year. Almost all cabins have large sliding glass doors that let in lots of air and frame the passing countryside. Forward are the lounge on the top deck and the dining room on the second deck. The sun deck is open the entire length of the boat but is currently not available because of all the low bridges. Everything folds flat so the ... read more

A lot of the positive feedback I've gotten about my travelblog has been about how some of the really stupid things I do are comical. Well, sadists rejoice! you are in for a treat because I may have made my biggest boner to date during this last adventure! Sit back, and enjoy my recounting of a trip that covers all the bases from slap-sticky harr-harrs to creamy sentimental gloop. I was sitting with a group of international students on the Alte Mainbrücke overlooking the Main. It was Stadtfest Friday, one of two days of a city-wide party involving music and laughter, and I was thinking about my upcoming trip to Berlin. Sometimes people tell you very wise things when you don't even ask, and, most of the time, because you didn't ask, you don't really listen. ... read more

I wasn't really planning on updating until the weekend, but I just had to write this up immediately because it was so awesomely unexpected. So I went into town today to look for a scarf, since as I learned this week, Germany gets cold--very cold, and very fast. Today was actually pretty nice, but Monday-Wednesday were bitter and ugly. Anyway, since I finally had gotten registered and matriculated into the university (that's another story entirely, but one I will spare you for the moment), I have a bus pass that--while is isn't technically valid until October 1st--looks close enough like a valid one that the bus driver nods me on every time. I thank the Italians for uncovering this unbelievably useful flaw in public transportation. Anyway, the bus arrived at my stop, and I descended. I ... read more

Went something like this... For the month of September, I take an Intensive German Language course. So on Tuesday, I went to a giant auditorium with a hundred-odd students of all sorts of national origins to take a test that would place us into a class of appropriate language skill level. I was aiming low. In fact, I wasn't sure there was a class so very very low that would suit my needs. My German language training to date: 25 hours of Pimsleur language tapes ("Wo sind die toillete?") and a week as a tourist in Bavaria ("Grüß Gott"). The test destroyed me. Oh, but the funny thing is, dear travelfellow, I knew not at the time how the test destroyed me. I would learn soon enough. An overhead transparency, in the center was our teacher's ... read more

Hey travelroos and travelrinas, So I just finished my whirlwind tour of Bavaria with meine Mutter. I guess I owe it to you to describe a bit of what we saw. First stop Munich, or as the locals call it, München. Munich is the self-appointed heart of Bavaria, and likewise, we pulled into the left atrium ruddy with a rich red oxygenated hue. Our modus operandi, which has yet to fail us, is to just walk around and look at things. On this mission, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel and took off zu fuß (on foot) to Marienplatz, a wonderful little walking area with shops and the Munich Rathaus, which is the word for city hall. Unlike the city halls you may see on public access TV in Glendale, AZ, this city hall ... read more

So it's been two travel-days (~7-8 weeks) since I last updated, and I've had a good bit happen. On the way over, my mom and I enjoyed a 10 hour layover in Philadelphia during which we visited my grandma and other old relatives. Since I had my saxophone with me, I performed the Ave Maria for them amidst the obligatory accompaniment of sniffling and passing-around of tissue boxes. We left almost as soon as we got there, but not before eating some of grandma's famous... soy nuggets? The flight over could have been worse; we watched Die Fälscher on my laptop and slept. We took the ICE from Frankfurt straight into Würzburg and walked to our hostel in the northeast of the city. It was something like 7AM by then. Würzburg was just opening up then, ... read more
