Blogs from Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany, Europe
Hi Everyone from Wurzburg, Germany! Sorry for no posts, but the internet connection has been the worst! This post will be short, but sweet. We are having a great time, weather is nice and we have gained probably 5 pounds each already! I will try to update when I can but if not, perhaps when we get to Paris.....or maybe after we get back to the states. We hope everyone is well! ShellRock... read more
The beds at our hotel, Der Gruener Baum, were nice and comfortable, but sleep still did not come as solidly as I'd hoped. At about 8am, when it was starting to get light and I was finally deeply asleep, the Cathedral across the street apparently went haywire. After maybe 15 *GONG*s I started to count them, after twenty more I was sure some madman had taken over the church. Of course when it finally stopped, I fell right back to sleep. This was our first morning at a German hotel and we were careful to choose a hotel that provided breakfast, because German hotel breakfasts are usually great! At our hotel, breakfast was served from 7am till 10am. We managed to get up by 9am and straggle down to the breakfast area by 9:30. We still ... read more
We manage to pull ourselves out of bed by 9:30am, just in time for a little cereal and a quick packing up. We left one of our duffel bags with Timmo. We would be meeting her at her parent's house just before Christmas. That meant that Renee and I each had our big backpacks, the kids each had their small backpacks, and one large rolling (thankfully) duffel bag with the kids boots, snowsuits, clothes, etc.). Theoretically, therefore, we were able to travel on our own now. Timmo hauled us off to the Erlangen Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and bade us goodbye. We bought the local family train ticket, which entitled a family of 4 to unlimited travel for 24 hours within Bavaria. The only downside was that it was a 2nd class ticket. Ahh, and now ... read more
Well, it's been a while since I had time to sit down and write another blog entry, and 4 weeks have passed since my 21st. So instead of the usual in depth rambling of what I've been up to, I've decided to make this one a comparison of student life in Germany and student life in the UK. After 6 weeks of being here, I've experienced a fair amount and after a nice trip back to York last weekend, it's made me think a lot about the differences between the two. Lectures (Vorlesungen) It's been 4 weeks since the official start of term, and the commencement of lectures. I was very confused with when lectures actually started as there is no centralised organisation for the department. The department is split up into the various areas of ... read more
Well just over two weeks have passed since my last blog, and since then I've started lectures (finally!), sampled some of Wuerzburg's nightlife and turned 21. Not too bad for having lived in Wuerzburg for just over 2 weeks. So what have I been up to? Well, what would be called 'Freshers Week' back in the UK never really happened. All that happens the week before lectures start is basically the introductory lectures and your usual library tour. I did neither. Instead I made the most of my freedom as well as I could. Lack of German bank card and still in the process of sorting out modules and adjusting to German life meant that only one night out could be done, and had to contact people in advance as to what was happening as I ... read more
Well, what can I say about Wuerzburg? It's one of those cities which come rain or shine (preferably shine) looks beautiful. Lots of old architecture; lots of little winding streets as well large sweeping ones; lots of Churches and a beautiful market square. Despite the slight rain when I arrived last Monday, I knew that I'd made the right decision to come here over Aachen. To top it off, the accomodation in which I'm living is a lot better than the places I've lived in during my time at York: a huge bedroom, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. However there is one downside to all this: social life. In Goodricke, there were 16 of us on our corridor, you couldn't go anywhere without seeing anyone and last year I was in a house of 6 ... read more
Culture Shock & A Random Trip To Munich
Published: October 12th 2009Europe » Germany » Bavaria » WürzburgI mentioned in my first blog that surely after several years of knowing I was going to do a year abroad that I'd be prepared for it. My answer was no and that is due to one reason: the culture shock. Yes, at the end of the day we are all Europeans but each country is different. After being at university for 2 years where you're no longer a little fish in a big pond by the end of it, leaving your friends and family behind to move to a different place and attend a different university is a big jump for anyone, in a way a bit like starting university over again. Factor in the fact that you have to speak and understand a foreign language makes it rather daunting. As I mentioned previously, back ... read more
Ever since I knew that I could spend a year in Europe as part of my degree, I'd decided that it was something I wanted to do. All of the courses I applied for involved me spending a year elsewhere, so surely with all this preparation, I would be ready for whatever would be thrown at me. Well 4 years down the line since I started looking at universities, I'm finally doing my year in Europe and was I fully prepared for everything in store? No, to be honest. Last December was when everything actually started. My supervisor emailed the contact at Julius-Maximilians Universitaet Wuerzburg, where I had decided to go, after saying I definitely wanted to do the year in Europe. Not expecting a reply quickly, just within two days, I'd had a reply saying ... read more
