Wow what a crazy medieval city. The buildings are so wild I feel out of place. Weve met some real cool people in Belgium. Benedict, bought us a round last night at the bar. We met him for like 2 seconds and he grabbed us beer. We found a pumping bar @ like 2am. Full of French/English students from Brugge. All locals. We were loaded last night. Lots to do today. We found a cheap little guitar for 30 euro: SOLD. And iùm gonna smash before the airline can. BUt miss everyone back home: OMG the girls are georgeous in Belgium but really donùt talk to us. these keyboards really grind my gears. ùµ$^µùùµù"é&"é&é"&é. "If you iz watching dis in da UK, you may remember me from da telly. If you iz in Belgium... you iz living in a shit hole." - Ali G, Ali G Indahouse (2002) Buoyed by having successfully completed my Search for the Truth About the Fries, I decided to undertake a little quest to see if I could solve another one of life´s enduring mysteries: Is Belgium - home of the waffle, Tintin, and Hercule Poirot - indeed a shit hole as Ali G proclaimed? Inspired by the famous portly Belgian detective, and with camera, notebook and my trusty Acme Shit Hole Detector 2006 in tow I set off in search of the Truth. Leaving The Hague, I boarded my train and headed for Antwerp, one of the major centres for the world diamond trade, ... read more

It was my birthday on Thursday and boy did I have a great one! I got lots of phone calls and messages and felt very special! I had to work, but afterwards some of the girls from work took me out for drinks, and then I met up with Kath and Graham at London Bridge for a couple more and a fabulous dinner. This weekend saw me heading off to Brugge in Belgium with Ed, Matt, Monique and Chris. We set off from London Bridge on Friday night in a hire car towards Folkestone, to catch the train through the channel tunnel (or ‘chunnel’ to those in the know) to Calais. Catching the train was a surreal experience. Everyone drives on to the train in their cars, and basically sits in their cars until you arrive ... read more

Matt: Belgium didn’t really impress Ed and me the last time we were there, five years ago. Looking back, I remember it more as this hazy void between the beauty of Berlin and the debauchery of Amsterdam (or as nine hours of my life that I’ll never get back). And so when a few of our friends suggested that we take a weekend in Brugge, I was less than enthusiastic! My doubts eased however when I started reading some articles on the place. Brugge seems to be known for four of my favourite things: Chocolate, Canals, Cuteness and Belgian Beer. Picturing myself consuming chocolate while cruising down a cute canal, sipping Belgian beer (try saying that fast 10 times), I relented. Our journey started on Friday afternoon at Waterloo where we picked up our car for ... read more

The land of beer, fries, mussles, waffles and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! I have indulged. Stayed in Brugge which was such a quaint little town. The next morning we went to Brussels for the day. A lot of people told me that there wasn’t much to see but I have to disagree. It was exactly the weekend I needed, away from hectic London and tourists. I did all the proper sight seeing. And of course, plentiful of eating and drinking beer. Cherry and raspberry flavoured. Mmmm…. Before heading back to England we stopped at some world war memorial sites. It was pretty surreal to visit the actual trenches and battle fields. The trip definitely has given me the travel bug again. I plan on heading to Cornwall next weekend to get some sun!! ... read more

From sweaty to sweaters! We left Tanzania where it was so hot and humid that we were sweating constantly, and arrived in northern Europe where it's still early spring --- our clothing is barely cutting it here. In Amsterdam we managed to secure a hostel for one night, but the city (SOOO beautiful) was fully booked for the following night. We secretly believe that Amsterdam is the Vegas of Europe, with its red light district and cannabis cafes --- combined with Easter vacations for the continentals, the place was crawling with european tourists. It was wonderful just walking around the city, though, with all its canals, old buildings and bicycles EVERYWHERE. With more time (and a place to stay), it would be a wonderful city to explore. Alas, we checked all kinds of hostels and hotels, ... read more

I went to my first professional soccer/football game in Brugge this weekend with Krzys, Patricia, and Petrus. Petrus is from Brugge, and he hooked us up with some cheap student tickets. Thanks Petrus! I had a great time. I don't really have time to write about it, so just check out the pictures.... read more
