13/6//23 l’isle sur la sorgue Woken in the middle of the night by a massive crack of thunder which was followed by heavy rain. And when you are sleeping in a motorhome you hear all the drops as they land on the roof I can promise you. Must have soothed us to sleep again as it was a bit later than normal when we woke. Had decided that lovely though Avignon is we didn’t want to do another city day, especially after getting a bit overheated yesterday. So we set out for L'isle sur la Sorgue, a pretty town about 20 miles due East. Sunday was a busy day. We left St. Remy early to make it to the fantastic outdoor market in Isle Sur La Sorgue. Parking was a bit of a mess, but after we luckily found a spot only a few minutes away, we walked to the bustling market place. Any kind of Provencial goodies you would want were sold a multiple stands here. I wish I'd brought a big bag to carry all of our purchases. After doing a lap around the enormous market which covered the entire town, we started on our second lap, euros in hand to pick out our picnic ingredients (and other souvenirs). We just wanted to share with you the wheels of this unique little village in Provence where we stayed for our week en Provence via a photo collection of the wheels that originally,date back from around the 17th century. These wheels assisted in the production of all the paper, grains and silks in the region. The tracery of rivers, all surrounding Isle sur la Sorgue were dotted with 77 of these working wheels , but now only 14 remain, they were and are ,all powered by one of the largest natural springs in the world . They add a unique charm and character to this 14th century village, that we came to really know after a week of our early morning walks winding in between the canals and narrow winding streets. This is a little special confessional blog from two people who love food and who have spent the last 8 months removing 35 kgs of fat from our bodies and now find ourselves in a foodies heaven!!! We are now pray daily that Africa will be our saving grace. Provence is absolutely nothing less than a food lovers heaven. At the end of our week of sampling copious varieties of terrines, tapenades, salamis, olives, 12 month old cheeses and breads, to die for, and all the seasonal fruits and vegies, plus the occasional glacee(French for the best icecream ever) plus a few little Ricards (ainisee) and le Vin --- on our last night in Provence we took ourselves off to a Michelin Hat world renowned Provence restaurant --- le Vivier...... for a super duper gastromomic ... read more
