I wake with a knot in my stomach. Today we're booked on a tour which includes a boat trip. The last time this happened Issy ended up wanting to kill the captain, most of the crew and half the other passengers. Hopefully this time will be slightly better. Issy decides she wants to conserve her energy for the tour, so I set off for a quick wander around Lourmarin on my own. I go into the twelfth century Chateau de Lourmarin. Some of its rooms are set up as they would have been a couple of hundred years ago, and others have museum pieces on display. It's very attractive, more akin a large house than a castle, and provides good views from the second floor over the village and the surrounding countryside. I walk back through ... read more

An absolutely excellent idea to visit Cassis by train. Arrangements went like clockwork though have to admit I had very carefully noted bus and train times. We scootered to Ollioules station 1.5 km away and then waited 20 minutes to buy our train tickets as for some reason the 4 customers in the queue in front of us must have been making the most complicated journeys and took 10 minutes each. The queue was out of the door by the time we got to the booth where I purchased our return (Oap rate €10 each) tickets to Cassis, all conversation in French, in 1 minute flat. We went on the top deck of the train, as a double-decker train was a real novelty, and arrived in Cassis station 25 minutes later. The shuttle bus was waiting ... read more

I always love Fridays. It’s the last day of the week normally at work and I have the weekends to look forward to. And a long weekend every week at that. Today started with a Labrador dog sniffing round our plot and thinking of depositing a present along the way. He wouldn’t move and kept sniffing round our electric hook up cables. In the end we accidently moved the cables and they hit him where it hurt and he took off without leaving us something to remove. We had moved to Cassis a little further along the coast. The plot was a reasonable 80 square metres and the sun was shining. Our plot was half in the sun and half in the shade which is quite a good arrangement. If it gets too hot at least ... read more

Monday, September 7, 2009 Marseille, France I am attending L'Alliance Francaise Marseille - Provence for four weeks. I began French classes today. Well at least I thought that I would begin them. In preparing for this trip, I had neglected to send via FAX my placement test to the school here in Marseille. So when I arrived on Monday morning, they looked over my written placement test and decided that I would be in the class that is for beginners. This class is a Wednesday through Friday class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. However, there seemed to be a miscommunication with the secretary and she whisked me away into a classroom and asked me to take a seat. It didn’t take long for me to realize that she had mistakenly added me to the very ... read more

The train ride from Paris to Aix-en-Provence on the TGV (fast train) only took 3 hours! My friend Kari is studying for the semester in Aix and so we were finally able to line up our weeks to see each other for vacation! I arrived to beautiful blue sky in Aix and only needed one layer under my peacoat while I waited for Kari at a café, it was glorious! A beautiful French-looking blonde suddenly tackled me and there was Kari’s smiling face! We spent the day walking around the cute little streets of Aix and then Kari and I went over to her host-mom’s house for an aperatif. Her host Mom is a cute little French woman named Ginou. She warmed up some little puff pastries for us and we drank some cassis, lemon cello, ... read more

After a fascinating couple of days in beautiful Grenoble, we found ourselves on a train once again. This time to Cassis, on the Mediterranean where we have been for the past four days, camping. Cheapest food and drink we have found yet and 70+ degree weather! Tomorrow morning we are off to Levanto, Italy, where we will stay for a week or so, again with the camping. The location will give us direct access to Cinque Terre. Soon after we will be spending a few more days in Paris before heading back once again. Could someone at Blue Sea let Susan know if she still has a job when she gets back? Also Don needs a place to stay for a couple of days until we find a place!! ;) The Mediterranean sun is out there, ... read more

Sweet Sweet Cassis Europe » France » Provence Alpes Cote d Azur » Cassis By kamaaole kama heleJuly 23rd 2007Matthew and ErinSWEET SWEET CASSIS Getting to Cassis wasn't as easy as we had hoped, but when we finally did arrive it was definitely worth the effort. It was a beautiful port town in the shadow of an old castle perched atop a cliff. The ocean was cool and refreshing, and the beach was packed with charred european bodies (quite entertaining). The side streets and alleyways were filled with great shops and amazing little restaurants... read more
