Under complete duress we now have to leave France for a few months. It has come around far too quickly and we really do not want to leave here. The countryside, towns, food, wine, weather and people - French and other - have all been wonderful (a few minor events aside). We truly believe that this area is going to make a great home. A recommendation to any campers, caravans or chalet hirers - we are leaving one of the best sites we have ever been on. We have been living in a tent now for nearly 3 months and I can pretty much say that because of the camp site and the owners, it has been one of the best experiences I have had. The owners are welcoming and friendly and the facilities are well ... read more

We slept through breakfast and checked out about 11:30. After we explored our own chateau, it was time to find a cappuccino, a baguette and explore more chateaus. Our first stop of the day was Chateau Chenonceaux. This remarkable castle has a tangled history of love and betrayal. It was given to Diane de Poitiers, mistress to Henri II. Diane’s power over Henri’s heart infuriated his reigning queen, Catherine de Medici. However, after Henri died during a joisting tournament in 1559, Catherine had Diane thrown out of Chenonceau. , Inspired by her native Florence, Catherine added the two story gallery that spans the river. In honor of my father, I found the mechanics of the chateau to be the most interesting. It has a rotisserie that automatically rotates three different stakes, perhaps roasting up to 30 ... read more

By 4:30, we were traipsing around the François I hunting Chateau, Chambord. The famous façade is highlighted by its four monumental towers, and the gardens and forest surrounding the palace number more the 13,000 acres. The chateau has a beautiful terrace which provides 360 views of the gardens, a Louis XIV apartment and a double corkscrew staircase, (I think it is a D’ Vinci design) allowing Renaissance guests to ascend the grand staircase without ever meeting descending quests. After our visit on the interior and short walk around the grounds, we decided to view the palace from the moat. We rented a row boat and took turns paddling around the picturesque grounds while the sun moved closer toward setting. Once back in the van, we headed for a place to put our weary heads. Loire Valley Castles As I leave tomorrow for our Ireland/Scotland/England vacation, I wanted to update this with my pictures from this past weekend!! So we boarded the bus at 7:45am (you can imagine my excitement at 7:45am) - but in French time, it was more like 8:15am before we got moving. The weekend would be usually half an hour behind when we were to be doing things. Anyways, it would be a 4 hour drive to our first destination: Chenenceau. I spent most of the ride there chatting it up or listening to my music and staring out the window. We were also given a movie to watch - it kept me from sleeping. We got to Chenenceau around 12:30pm or so and toured around for 2 hours. I won't go into describing the Castle considering ... read more

The day after Christmas, my mom and I headed off to Angers, where I studied abroad for a semester in 2003. It was nice to show my mom where I first lived abroad. We had a lot of fun in Angers...although we decided that we shop more in small towns where there isn't a lot to do! We also went to Saumur during out little stay there. Saumur is a really small town about twenty minutes from Angers on a regional train. It's quite a beautiful city. Enjoy the pictures!... read more

Morning broke as it always does in France, bright clear and quiet. We were on our way home and work was beckoning next week. We work early and ate our breakfast in the local Campanile pondering on what we planned to do over the next few days. We were trying to make the most of what was left of our short break before returning to the toil and hinderence of work. There was so much to see and sometimes it is hard to make a decision. Much depends on taste and time. It is easy to fill a fortnight up with places to see and things to do and then to realise there is so much more left that you could have taken the time to see. . We knew we were going to drive up ... read more

The day after school was out we went on the first of two summer vacations...this one to the French Atlantic Coast. Staying at hotels with three kids was turning out to be quite expensive as hotels charged by the bed rather than by the room. We learned about Pierre et Vacnaces, a resort company similar to Club Med, but without the food, thus costing much less. So we decided to reserve a room at the Port Bourgenay Pierre et Vacances resort at the Vendee region of France. It turned out to be a great place, and we would stay at another Pierre et Vacances resort on the French Riviera in April 1995. 11 June 1993 Friday. We left early from our home in Overijse, Belgium and three hours later were checking into the Sequoia Lodge at ... read more
