It's been a quieter week this week, the weather turned a bit grey and windy for a few days (it even rained once, for about 20 minutes!) and my body decided that despite the fact the temperatures were still in the high teens, it was time for the obligatory winter cold. Today though, things are returning to normal, the sun's back out and the temperature's back in the 20's, and my cold's disappeared with the grey weather. I also had to go and see a dentist, because I had a filling that was cutting into my tongue, so after finally managing to persuade a grumpy dental receptionist to book me in, I was seen on Tuesday. Now, I'm not usually scared of dentists, but when this guy said, right I'm going to put your mouth to ... read more

I finally got all my paperwork sent off/handed in to all the right places this week! At last! With that out of the way, it was a case of turning up to lectures (I have finished an entire pad of A4 already - I think I used 2 during the whole of last year, they really make you write here! Although my doodles, which get ever-more abmitious with every passing modern history and Non-specialist Spanish lecture may also have something to do with my rapid paper-consumption), and then planning things for the evenings. On Tuesday we went to Tio Pepe's (where else?) for a pub quiz arranged by the English department. Despite the presence of tutors, which was a little strange, it was a good night, and a great oppurtunity to socialise with some French students. ... read more

Well Hello! So here I am, enjoying some late afternoon sunshine in Laroque des Albères, France. It has been a busy few weeks since my last official update, so here goes. We've (Cassandra, Amanda, Rowan and myself) been pretty much working straight for 6 days. We took last Sunday off since it was due time, and, since the night before we hit up our wondrous little town (kicked out for closing time at 10:30 p.m.), we decided to take a walk into town and buy some croissants. Well. We decided to walk opposite our home, since we had a fleeting thought of perhaps hitchhiking to the sea. Buses don't run on Sundays here, so we gave it a go. The first car that picked us up drove 3k out of her way and right to the ... read more

On a high after such a great weekend, the start of the new week brought me back down to earth with a bump. There was erasmus paperwork demanding to be taken care of, post offices who refuse to sell you stamps (don't ask!) and almost a whole day spent entirely doing two horrible translations. However, on Thursday, in the erasmus welcome meeting (yep, a welcome meeting after we've been studying here for 3 weeks) I finally got most of my paperwork and my timetable sorted. I hadn't got much planned for the weekend, but since Rosie's mum had come to stay, on Friday evening Fi and I went out for dinner with Rosie, her mum and all her housemates. We continued on to havana club, where the atmosphere let us down a little after last week, ... read more

So yea, I am at my new 'home' for the next three weeks. There are dogs and cats galore (the house owner is the animal queen). It's a house straight out of the mediteranean, texas roof, palms and cactuses etc. We are on a smaller sized property but still 3 acres, surrounded by olive trees. The sea is about an hour's walk away, and there are mountains directly behind us. The farm is organic and permaculture (look it up, I'm not an expert yet). It is a smaller scale operation sort of just getting off the ground. It's all very interesting and beautiful! I am less remote here, so I should be able to get some pics up soon, and make some phone calls. Yessss. More to come a bit later, I have some kitchen clean ... read more

Yet another week gone, I can't believe I'm writing up another blog already! The week got off to a fairly ordinary start, with lectures now seeming routine. In-between starting to sort out the mound of erasmus paperwork that has to be sent back to Sheffield and trying to get to the erasmus office during its opening hours (not easy when they are open for a total of four hours over two days), the working week passed in a flash. I had moments of homesickness, but by the weekend, I was on top of the world again when I heard from my mum that she and my little brother Rory have got flights and a hotel booked to come and stay at the end of October! It was difficult to get it all sorted, but I now ... read more

Mas de la Fargassa So I am in the Pyrenees mountains of Southern France, in a homestead much removed from the world . I like it . There are 10 woofers here ; that is, organic farm labourers like myself. We come from Germany (3), America (2), Holland (1), Britain (3) and myself. We sleep in tents or caravans, shower once every three or so days and eat magestically. Fresh fruit from the fields and trees, cheeses, breads and nuts - it is all fantastic. But it is quite hard work ! Yesterday we picked raspberries. Sounds easy enough, but try not eating any as you go ! Next we prepared lunch and I was given my daily job : salad green collection (much much more than romaine lettuce go into our salads). It gives me ... read more

Another entry coming at ya! So begins my second week in France. Time seems to be standing still up in the mountains. The week was busy with various projects; berry picking, weeding of the gardens, eliminating a toxic herb (South African Rag Wort) from the properties and clearing land for future farmsteads. Oh yes, and making delicious dinners. We really work for our food. But it is delicious; fresh berries, apples, plums, chestnuts from the trees, cheeses aplenty, homebaked breads and other great meals. All vegetarian of course! We really have an international (or should I say commonwealth) crew. Five brits, one kiwi, two americans, two belgians, three germans, one dutchman and two children. They all bring something to the table, so to speak. The next stop is La Boulou, a bit further from the mountain, ... read more

So another week has flown by under gorgeous blue skies - I still can't believe how hot and sunny it is, and nearly into October. I still carry an umbrella everywhere, even though it hardly ever rains - I guess it's a British thing! It was my first week of lectures, and after the headache of trying to put together a timetable out of modules offered by several different departments, we set off, not sure what to expect. Some of them were really good, especially medieval literature with an amazing lecturer, who is so enthusiastic about it, and was really welcoming to us erasmus students, where other lecturers seemed to see us as a bit of a nuisance. However some classes we actually had to escape from, such as a spanish grammar class where we were ... read more

Well, here I am, one week in, gazing out of my window at a cloudless blue sky. I can safely say, as first weeks go in any new place, this one's been pretty good! I arrived at Perpignan station last Sunday evening at 10p.m. to find absolutely no taxis. Inside the station, everything was shutting down and I couldn't find anything that might offer taxi numbers. The reception at my hotel was due to close in half an hour, so after waiting several more minutes in the dark, I phoned the hotel. The lovely man there said he would call a taxi straight away, and 20 minutes later, I was lying on my bed in the hotel. The next day I set off for the boulevard Kennedy in search of the accommodation agency I'd reserved a ... read more
