Hello There!

Last June, I graduated from Biology/ Enviro Chemistry at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.
I was working a job unrelated to my education, with little hope of career advancement. I worked with some amazing people, and I will miss them!

Although I have returned from my "epic" voyage across Western Europe and Morocco, I will keep up with this travel blog, for life is a constant journey, and if one so chooses, it can be filled with joy and adventure.

One Year ago today: My own personal “Survivor” and why this is the closest I will ever get to being on the show. A year ago this week, Linda, Jonny and I were holed up on the outskirts of Algeciras, Spain. Now, Algeciras is a pretty scuzzy place. I’m talking don’t go out at night scuzzy. We found ourselves staying on the side of a hill, under a small burr oak tree, near to a bunch of ruined homes, warehouses and other trash strewn about. We couldn’t be sure we were alone either as every now and again we would catch glimpses of locals wandering the hillside, poking around our tent. What this meant was that we could never leave the tent and our belongings alone. Someone would always have to be with the tent. Under ... read more

Hello all! So this past week marked by departure to France anniversary. One year ago, I was in Paris, France, living the good life - no responsablilties, no work, no problem! I only had to answer to myself; I only had to worry about the core survival basics - finding food and cooking it deliciously, finding shelter and having enough social interaction to be content. All of the above-mentioned tasks could be quickly fulfilled, leaving plenty of time for adventuring. During my first week in France, I met great friends, and quickly improved upon my language skills. As I made my way south by train, I was mesmerized by the French paysage - soaring mountains, beautiful wildflowers, sculpted monasteries, and magnificent little country cottages. I had arrived in Heaven on Earth. The open road soon narrowed. ... read more

She had massive pollen sacs on her legs; Her hairy body allowed her to work on this cold, cloudy day. Her hive is awake, alive. We need provisions, they say collectively. The Queen is hungry, so too are the larvae. The drones need energy for their first mating swarms. The floral diversity abounds, the young worker can afford to be choosy. The clovers I took won't matter to her, But for me, a soothing and delicious tea! We are both after the same commodity, in the end, nectar.... read more

I wrote this around May 1st, 2009, while I was hitchhiking towards Llanez, Cantabria. I was headed to live with a family for a week, to help them build a cob house. Cob is a earthen composite material made of clay, sand, straw and mud. It is extremely ecological in that walls can be built of the very material from which the building site is excavated. Here is a revelation I had while waiting for a ride... How generous the people of the Earth can be, if you just put yourself out into her! Kindness pours in, happiness is exchanged. For human contact is vital, to even the most solitary beings. I believe a person could and will go crazy in a desolate setting. The touch of a loved one, the laugh of a friend, ... read more

This poem was written approximately April 12th, 2009, while I spent time with friends in Sesimbra, Portugal Rays of light travel along a cloudy sky, deeply penetrating beams, across the countryside. Passing through the air, striking molecules aplenty, Only to land on my body, and warm me to the core. What a splendid day in Sesimbra, en la praia escondida. Down the slopping hillside, loose rocks underfoot, encountering fields of sea roses, rosemary and lavender. The slow taste the dust, kicked up by enthused youth. An afternoon of activity, followed by fine Portuguese cuisine and la hora de siesta. After a day filled with fun and excitement, it is time to rest. ... read more

A poem Big green bins full of rubbish; Step on the pedal and look inside. A whole treasure chest of enchantment, Even an old, rotting hide. At first glance there's nothing, Just some big heavy bags. But upon further inspection, my we're lucky lads! A sack full of buns, pastries and cakes. So much food you could almost fill a lake! Next we uncover numerous bouquets of flowers; Someone must have died. But wouldn't such objects of such beauty be better off up high? Instead, we throw them away, toss them aside, Until some lucky vagabond hunters gives those lids a pry. ... read more

A note on Hitchhiking!

After 8 months of travel, I have decided to come home. Don't get me wrong, I adore travelling, with the constantly changing environments, ability to meet new and very interesting characters, the exposure to new cultures, etc., it can be EXHAUSTING!! Seriously, I travelled largely by hitchhiking, which can be described as the ultimate test of ones' patience, not to mention faith in the kindness of complete strangers. Picture it, standing or sitting for hours on end, waiting, waiting, WAITING! Watching one person (Read empty cars) whiz by you spewing toxins and noise your way can be tough. Especially if you are travelling solo, as I did for the final three weeks of my travels. It isn't very encouraging seeing this one person one car trend, especially in Morocco and Portugal, countries most people would associate ... read more

Our First Experiences in… The Western Sahara In early March, we found ourselves headed towards the Western Saharian province of Morocco. We set off from Tiznit in the early afternoon, under cloudy skies. It was one of our poorer efforts in hitchhiking in Morocco; we waited fully two hours before we found the right ride. A Casablacan couple with a rather large and luxurious suv finally picked us up, and drove us some 30 kilometres in total, 15 of which were completely out of their way. The drive took us p about 500 metres, into the foothills of the Anti Atlas, and as we got out of the car, we were greeted by a fierce and wintery wind. It harshley reminded us of our last days in Europe, back in January. We settled into a ... read more

Currently, I write this from Sesimbra, about 40 kilometres south of Portugal´s glorious capital and largest city, Lisbon. I had previously spent a week in the south of the country, in the Algarve. Many of you may be familiar with Portugal; we have quite a large number of Portuguese descended residents in Toronto (and Cambridge). It is a country living in the shadow of it´s larger, and more economically influencial cousin, Spain. Portugal is still struggling to find it´s identity within Europe and the World. They have recently (in the 70´s) emerged from the shadow of dictatorship. The country was closed to the outside world. They are now faced with problems such as movement from rural areas to cities, and as a result, farms that have been within families for generations are falling into disrepair due to ... read more
