Cheers, Lauren en Andy... read more

In Perpignan to be exact. Actually in North Perpignan to be exacter. To be exactest I am in the Ibis hotel in the middle of a hotel district, which has all the charm of a parking lot really. Arrived just after half seven after another 8 hours of cycling (115 miles) in 30+ degrees, saying my final farewell to the Pyrenees with another couple of climbs. Andorra is genuinely just one long hill, topping out at 2,400m with an amazing 30km descent into Ax les Thermes once you're over the French border. My triumphant 100km descent into Perpignan didn't quite pan out as expected, partly because I didn't pay enough attention to the profile of the map beforehand, but primarily due to a strengthening easterly breeze. In the end I was struggling to keep pace with ... read more

Hello, 8/26 - We left Barcelona in the afternoon. As we rolled along next to the ocean we saw very small towns right by the sea. They looked like perfect little rural villages. We had planned to go to Montpellier and then onto Bordeaux. But these little villages looked so cool, maybe we should just be spontaneous and get off at one and try to find a place to stay? I think I see one with a hotel/restaurant sign over on that bluff... Just as we were walking off the train, I decided to be dumb and quickly ask the guy across from us: do you think we could find a place to stay in this town? He couldn't speak English but flagged down two younger girls walking down the aisle. They told us we should ... read more

Monday 20th July - Carcassonne - Vernet-Les-Bains Rather than take the autoroute via Perpignan, I elected to take a direct route folllowing La route de Carthars and over the Col de Jeu. Brilliant ride, although after yesterdays excursion the M25 would have seemed interesting so I may not be at my most objective. Once on the move the weight doesn't bother me too much and as long as it is dry you can still have fun. With the wind noise under control there is little to complain about the bike, save for a switch like throttle at low openings (necessitating over use of the clutch) and the most ridiculously inaccurate fuel gauge in the automotive world. You'd get a more accurate reading sticking your tadger in there. Would that make it a dickstip? (as opposed to ... read more

January 18th 2009

So the time has come: tomorrow I'm leaving Perpignan for good, with a whole load of mixed feelings! I've been back here for two weeks following the Christmas holidays, in order to sit the January exams. The first week was more or less exam-packed, leaving little time for anything else, but the second week has been much more of a whirlwind of packing, doing lots of 'last...' things and generally tying up loose ends and saying goodbyes. Oh and another exam, just for good measure. And as sod's law would predict, we've found some gems tucked away in this small city, which we wish we'd dscovered earlier. One such place is the appropriately named Cosy Club. After months of whishing we could find a nice little place for a drink and a chat, we finally found ... read more

December 20th 2008

So, here we are, the 20th December 2008, which has arrived impossibly quickly, and tomorrow I'm flying home for Christmas. To all intents and purposes, my time in Perpignan is done. All that remains is to return for two weeks in January to sit my exams. It's kind of strange. I can't wait to go home, I'm so excited about seeing my family and friends again, but for all its irritations, I will miss Perpignan, especially all the wonderful people I've met here. This week feels like it's gone quickly, but yet Monday seems like a long time ago. It's just been a blur of clearing out, packing, socialising and sitting the odd exam, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. So until Thursday, none of us were properly excited about Christmas because we had the ... read more
