Day 16 - We are heading up FRance with little idea where to go to next. We have just looked at the map and picked a road heading home. The weather had turned. Now we no longer face 34 degrees of heat but need to put our jumpers and coats on. It is dull and the rain has started to creep in bit by bit. We have very little in the way of plans. We have done what we wanted to do and we have seen what we wanted to see . All in all we did them too quickly. We will hit the north of France too soon at this rate. How about heading for the seaside ? How about heading for the battlefields ? This was the way our conversations were flying between us. ... read more

After breakfast we set off and were overtaken by 2 boats, which we followed through a series of locks every half a km or so. These locks could fit 3 boats in it so we all went in together. We got to the la Peyruque lock at 12pm and only 2 could fit at a time so the 2 in front of us went ahead. By this point it was 12:15 and the locks shut between 12:30 and 1:30 for lunch so the lock keeper came along and told us to tie up and he’d be back after his lunch. Consequently, our lunch stop was just before the la Peyruque lock. The lock keeper didn’t open the lock until 2pm, so that slowed us down and after going through the lock, we cruised along and enjoyed ... read more

After another late breakfast of a croissant, we headed back into Medieval Carcassone to go to the Basilica St-Nazaire. The stained glass windows inside it are supposed to be the best in southern France. We walked back to our hotel to prepare for checkout, had a light lunch in the bar and then waited for our taxi to arrive to take us to the boat base in Castelnaudary. The driver spoke no English and took us along all the back roads, rather than the motorway so it was a bit of an adventure. Finally we arrived at the Le Boat base at Castelnaudary to complete the paperwork and have our 1 hour briefing. The base is in a large basin of water, several hundred metres across, with a canal entering it one side and leaving it ... read more

Life at the chateau has been pretty tough, it is not that big as chateaux go, 6 or eight bedrooms, but a great kitchen which used to be the mini baronial hall, lovely pool and grounds in a the lovely little village of Salles sur l'Hers, Did a few km on the bike through countryside made famous by van Gogh, most recently to url=https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Mirepoix/@43.089216,1.87377,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m5!1e2!3m3!1s2601788!2e1!3e10!4m2!3m1!1s0x12afaa2cb3b6c569:0x9e50dc56c7a98564!6m1!1e1Mirepoixwhich has a beautiful mediaeval square, My Frnch is improving beyond all expectations and even if I am averaging between one and five words in ten depending on how quickly it is being spoken. I find I can say "oui, oui"and "d'accord" at the appropriate time and the locals are very patient. Traveling by train from Toulouse to Castelnaudray I was chatting with some French who were on ... read more

Canal Du Midi Carmen directed us to the Europcar office at the railway station in Montpellier and told us where to go, but it was a one way street. We could see where to drive to but couldn’t get across to it. Di finally got out and asked questions and we followed those directions which brought us back to the same place and then we saw the narrow entrance by some rocks. We finally got in, checked in the minibus, loaded up our luggage on the shuttle, farewelled the little minibus and were off to the station… hopeful that nothing was left behind. At the station we found a restaurant upstairs with lift access to the platform we needed and bought a coffee and something to eat from a French girl who spoke English with a ... read more
