Canal Du Midi Carmen directed us to the Europcar office at the railway station in Montpellier and told us where to go, but it was a one way street. We could see where to drive to but couldn’t get across to it. We thought all locks were going to offer something like this but were disappointed the rest of the way.

Unfortunately a lot of the trails are gravel with plane tree roots jutting out of the soil. This means you need a very good saddle or a well padded bottom - we had neither. In fact our bikes with small wheels wanted to drop you in the canal when you hit a root that ran along the track.

The long twilight allowed us to cruise till about 7 o'clock when it was cooler and still get dinner ready so we could eat on deck in the evening light.
