So what were my first thoughts about the seaside town of Argeles Sur Mer? It is not the sort of place we head for these days . A sort of Skegness with sun or Blackpool with less tacky shops . Well that was my thoughts as we made the decision to spend a few days here relaxing by the Med. We needed to stop off to get away from driving . With the sun beating down at last it felt right to stop and take stock before moving on again . And of course after our aborted trip to Perpignan we still had a plan to see the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and we could do this easily from Argeles railway station . What we did not realise when we parked up at Camping ... read more

I had some leg cramps during the night. Thinking perhaps that was because I hadn't had my usual post-ride pretzels the day before, this morning I salted my coffee (cafe au lait, actually - I am still not a full-fledged coffee drinker, although I'm starting to appreciate its value as a pre-ride stimulant) before heading out on what I intended to be a leisurely, knee-saving ride. Ignoring the map and navigating purely by gut feel (recall I was starting from a different hotel than most of our group) I poked around town and eventually got on route - perhaps not via the most direct itinerary (or perhaps it was?) but I got to see a bit of the town and where people lived. Today's ride started off on the busy N16 which was full of commuters, ... read more

We didn’t decide what we were going to do today until we got up as we were waiting to check the weather. There was some blue sky but a lot of cloud so we decided we would visit the town and on foot rather than getting the scooter out. I checked the map on Google, thank you campsite for free good wifi, and discovered that it has a marina to the south of the town so we headed for there. First of all visited the market which was full of amazing things, none of which we had any desire to buy or any use for (though Bob was tempted by a 2 for 1 offer on a mop for only €10 !) The promenade is very nicely done. The houses along the sea front are all ... read more

Not a terribly exciting day today. The drive to Argeles-sur-Mer, near Perpignan and on the coast only a few miles from the Spanish border was not particularly scenic. We were trying to avoid driving through the middle of busy Montpelier, Beziers and Narbonne while staying off the motorways. The road we took directly west from the Camargue goes through very busy industrial areas, a few miles back from the coast and without sight of the interesting towns of Aigue Mortes, Cap d’Agde, Sete etc. which we have visited before, so were bypassing this trip. Once past Beziers we turned south and through the ‘Etang’ area which is full of custom made seaside resorts, Leucate, Carnet-Plage, St Cyprien, modern, neat and tidy but not scenic and very much not to our taste. We have driven this way ... read more
We stopped for lunch on the edge of a lake. No danger of swimming even despite the sign as there wasn't enough water !

BLOG 9 Monday 11 June – OK – here we are again..........still at the super-efficient German –run campsite at Sant Pere Pescador on the Bay of Roses surrounded by Dutch & Deutsch all with their multi-accessorised motorhomes/caravans.....if a gadget has been invented, they’ve got it. Each pitch is immaculate, lots of sweeping/cleaning, duvets are aired every morning and all meals are eaten at cloth-clad tables with flowers and candles. By contrast the pommy slobs (well one pommy and one Ozzie slob) go at our own pace. The morning was cooler with mixed cloud/sunshine. We got on the bikes and cycled into the slightly inland town – 3 k’s – mainly along a sandy beach-side cycle path. After a tootle around this small Spanish town , we found a bar....for coffee and very local white wine (reminders ... read more

Spain and its people were nice, the cities fantastic but the towns and villages were disappointingly uninteresting, certainly in the area we were in. We would be happier in France and so there we headed, to Argeles sur Mer which is of course on the coast and not far over the border. We first came to Argeles in 1997, it is known as Tent City on account of all the campsites and there are a lot, although they are now mostly filled with mobile homes. It is just a long nice beach and promenade with expensive bars and restaurants. However, our campsite La Chapelle was good and cheap and Michelle wanted to be on a beach. Neither of us could wait though to set off for the nearby village of Collioure, which not only is one ... read more
