The Tour Group, which I spent 3 weeks touring Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and now France, after only an overnight stay in Paris, had left. Why none of them extended beyond the one day in Paris is beyond me. So left on my own, in a hotel in the fringes of Paris, I had to use the Subway or bus system, on my own, to navigate my way around this huge city. The subway maps were about the size of a large Pizza full of different lines running hither and thither, with hundreds of dots with long strange French names. It was a bit of a challenge for me, being from a relatively small city with no subway system. However, I have been to Tokyo in the past, where sometimes, you needed to cross ... read more

French Satire I saw my first french equivalent of "The Today Show" this afternoon and thought I'd post to tell you about it. It was really amusing and quite indicative of the french sense of humor (rather acerbic and witty) so all in all a good portrait of popular culture here. The show is called "La Semaine des Guignols" (A Week of Puppets) and is a satirical news presentation that mocks french politicians as well as taking pot-shots at other world leaders. The "actors" are clay puppet caricatures of the leading french politicans and their wives. On today's show we saw the following topics: -The politician Devilliers (extreme right wing) spouting off about the penetration of black Senagalese into the bosom of France, daring to assimilate into the french culture and evolve into 'real human beings ... read more

Do you know that myth that everyone likes to spread in the United States, the one that asserts that the American people are disliked in France and pretty much everywhere else in Europe? Don't believe a word of it. I thought I had better arrive hear and spend some time before I could legitimately repudiate it, but I am pleased to say that after a week here I have yet to receive a comment about "fat, stupid, rude Americans" or anything of the like. Give the French peole credit- they can distingbetween our people and our government, and are sophisticated enough to realize that while a majority of our population elected Bush, he is not universally supported. (And besides, I don't think the majority of Republican supporters at this period in our history are choosing to ... read more

Never took advantage of the opportunity to try one of Frances most famous Haute Cuisine, while there. Perhaps the reason is, while in High School, I worked as a yard boy in one of the gardens on the mountains of Honolulu, which was rain forest country. I picked up snails the size of ping pong balls by the buckets. It was not an appetizing experience, and the stench of what dead rotting snail flesh smells like is still unforgettable, many, many years after. As our bus entered France from Switzerland, I noticed the change in scenery immediately. No longer was there, the dramatic mountains of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and colorful quaint country villages. France seemed relatively flat, yet green. The small towns were too similar, it seemed to me, like our own old small American ... read more

First things first, I am so sorry it has been a long time between updates - but internet is not so easy to access when in a campervan, staying in caravan parks. Well, once i finally receovered form Cardiff, i made my way and finally arrived in Paris with my head full of all the negative things people say about the place - they are rude, service is terrible and Paris is dirty!!!! Well what a surprise I got!!! Paris was clean, I met some nice people who helped me decipher the metro, the hotel staff where friendly, and I dont think I met 1 rude frenchman! I think those that said those thinks havent spent much time travelling (or in London!!!). I obvioulsy saw all the usual sights - Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Jim Morrison's ... read more

Dear all, Here begin the diaries of Nina in my state as willfully unemployed. Unfortunately I'm not yet bludging off the state, (though I'll be sure to grab a dole form from Centrelink as soon as I get home), but am gallivanting through Europe. For those who don't know, I finished work in Thailand August 25 and left dear Thailand on September 5 for the surprisingly sunny shores of Europe. I've already spent a day in London and a couple of days in Paris, and am now in Liege, Belgium. I'm in Liege another week, before a triumphant return to the gai Paris (to my friend's apartment with a view of Sacre Coeur!), and then I sidle down to Roma, via the slopes of Grenoble/Lyons (a Belgian friend lives there) and the catwalks of Milano (where ... read more

Seriously... no! No no no no... I do not see what other ppl see in Paris that's so "oh my goooood"... only the snotty ppl and expensive prices! and maybe that's why Paris is known mostly by its fashion. Alright, alright... there're lots of GORGEOUS sights!! and there are some streets that are so full of... I don't know, it's not full or art that you can see, but art that you can feel! and those were the parts I liked the most.. I felt soooo good on those areas.. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's been weeks since I started this entry and never finished... have I mentioned "procrastination" is my middle name?! Anyways.. I got some random confusing thoughts on Paris that I wrote while I was there at a Starbucks and then on the train to ... read more

Intro and overview by Matt before the details: Here are a few anecdotes about our travels that I think I'll title, "An American in Paris" 1. All you can drink free booze on international flights might sound like a good idea at take off. But I assure you, when you take off at 6PM and land at 10AM six hours later with 8 drinks in you, it's not a good idea. 2. Shopping in Paris is pretty easy, except they do not have a Wal-Mart, which is what we really needed to load up on supplies. Every store is smaller, with smaller sections. In fact, the smallest section of them all is the deodorant section. If you've ever traveled to Paris, you know what I mean. 3. Paris is great, except for all the Parisians. This ... read more

It is hard to believe that I have been here a week! just a week? already a week? I don't know. Sometimes it feels amazing here and other times it feels all weird. The first couple days weren't so bad: I was met at the airport by a french friend, she took me to her appartment and I felt very comfortable over all. She (Heloise) also took me to her friend's, where we just hung out. Then I moved into my own dorm room, located on an International campus. I spent the weekend trying to buy all the necessary things (I already spent immense amounts of money and I bought nothing extraordinary!). I also went to a modern art museum, Centre Pompidou (it's free the first sunday of each month, which is very cool). By Sunday ... read more

Our agenda for Thursday was all set and we were prepared for an early one. Except our alarm didn’t like the idea of having to wake up at 5am so it slept in… and as a result so did we. We eventually woke up at 11:20, over 7 hours later than scheduled. The reason we wanted to wake up so early was so we could go and watch the sunrise over the Eiffel Tower and get some good photos before the tourists rolled in by the bus load. But with that idea scrapped out the window, we awoke to daylight at 11:20 and hurried to get ready in order to check-out on time. Getting ready in record time and packing our bags, we were ready to leave the hotel at 12:05. We kept our luggage at ... read more
