We arrived in Nantes on Bastille Day (July 14th). We picked up our hire car, a dark brown 2 door Lexia which we called Chocolat! I was the driver and Sal the navigator because it is very expensive for drivers under 25 to hire cars. Driving on the right side was a challenge but with Sal's excellent navigation skills we were soon on the expressway to Brittany. We were greeted at Kerambris, just outside of port Manech, by Yveline, a soft spoken and gentle french women who is all kindness! Our home for a week was a beautiful farmhouse which has been in Yveline's family for 300 years. Yveline was very helpful in telling us (in french :))about the best places to eat and some great walks. THe food in Brittany is great - lots of ... read more

Today was probably one of the best days of the trip so far. We spent the entire day visiting Mont St. Michel and the beach town of St. Malo. We left around 7:45am and took a 2 hour bus ride to Brittany, another country of the Loire Valley. The drive was beautiful...tons of land with cows, sheep, and the most beautiful flowers you could ever imagine. I still can't get over how gorgeous the hydrangeas are here! They look like huge pieces of cotton candy in every color you could imagine! Mont St. Michel is an ancient castle, well city I suppose, built on the island in between Brittany and Normandy. It's HUGE! It also dates back to the year 706...it was eerie standing in someplace that old. The architecture was amazing...even though I think I ... read more

This week in Nantes wasn't exciting until Wednesday. I had friends come down from England and visit for a night, and the next day we all drove up 2 and a half hours to Keriven. It is near the English channel. Keriven sits on a Gigantic lake, 15km. Years ago there used to be a village where this lake is, lac de Guerledan, so they used to drain the lake to clean it and you can see what once was a village underneath. They have now figured out how to efficiently clean the lake and therefore don't drain in any longer. Since the village is still underneath, the lake must be very deep for all the water sports and fishing done there. Where we stayed, at a cottage, they have photos of what it looks ... read more

Welcome to St Just, the only continuous building in my life since I was five years old and hence my only home and source of many, many happy memories. It was here that I wanted to get married (but let it be clear that I am so grateful for that wonderful day in Port Fairy) simply because it symbolises almost everything about me. Cherry orchards, coffee and fresh baked croissants, frisbees lost in hedge, swimming in ‘leech-infested’ lakes and great, amazing, wonderful, fattening food. It has not all been roses; many poor family dynamics reared their ugly heads almost instantly but I am grateful that my wife has lent me new eyes. Now I can see myself doing stupid things and others doing the same and hopefully that is the first step to change. A ... read more

Out and about in the rain Bonjour mes amies et families. Well, we continue to enjoy ourselves despite seeing the most rain in the past five days that we have seen in the past 10 years when visiting France! It has been hard to believe at times that we are in Brittany and not somewhere where they have monsoon. This very lovely area of Brittany is called Cornouaille, and it is representative of our own lovely Cornwall, the difference being the lack of crowds and free parking wherever you go. The French do not seem to want to rip you off - unlike at home where the minute you stop you are either being photographed by a traffic warden or charged fiver for the pleasure. Parking here is in pleasant car parks with plenty of ... read more

Bonjour Bloggers, Well it is hard to believe that we have been away from home for a week now, how time flies when you are having fun. The weather has not been so clement on this trip and yesterday and today we have had a lot of rain. However, it is beautiful to see the storms gathering and rolling across the horizon. I have attached some photos to this blog for your perusal. We are having our usual good time on the farm. Our hosts, as always, making us feel so welcome and at home. The dogs have again adopted us and have moved in with us whenever they can get away with sneaking in. Although, Ian thought it was a bit much last night when Orkney the spaniel decided to get in bed with ... read more

The holiday begins We set off at 7am to catch the ferry from Dover to Boulogne. We now travel with Speedferries. It takes 50 mins to cross and is really cheap. A great service. If you buy the Supervouchers you can travel at any time and it costs £62 return well worth it. We arrived in Boulogne at about 1pm French time stopped for bread and were then on our way. The roads in France are superb forget M25 snarl ups they don’t seem to exist here. Apart from our regular picnic breaks at the Aires which are about every 15 miles on all motorways we did not stop until we reached Mont St Michel. Mont St Michel is a world heritage site and somewhere we have always wanted to visit. Believe us it was ... read more

Cancale cuddles. It was clear and sunny but the freshness of the May coastal breeze was undeniable. I was glad for the double fleece layers that I'd insisted on bringing with us and was cursing the fact that I couldn't find my hat. The first view of the sea was sublime. We had to drive down a small winding road which descended towards the beach. On the left hand side were houses and on the right some parking places. Surprisingly, of the twenty or so parking places, most were empty. We found a good spot, which inevitably involved some reversing and checking for possible 'getting-out' problems, and walked down the slippery road towards the sand. It reminded me of the little fishing villages that are redundant in the Southwest of the UK. Lots of little Grandpa ... read more

I took the train from Paris out to Brittany. I spent a few days in Dinan, where two hours would have sufficed, but it was a matter of hostel availability. Dinan was alright, I was just terribly bored and terribly allergic. The hostel took like and hour to walk to; lots of hills and field and forests. Nice scenery; but so doped up on double doses of allergy medicine q12h I couldn't wait to get out of there. Things improved in St. Malo and I wish I had been able to spend the time there instead. Nice seaside town with allergies much improved. I spent one day going to Mont St; Michel, which is better from afar, like in the pictures. Up close it is super crowded and you kind of trudge up with back ... read more
