France & Spain Sept – Dec 2022 Wednesday 14th September 2022 We are off!! At last!! We had decided to drive to Spain a) because Chris wanted to see his brother in Chassignolles, France b) his cousin Lynn was in Montpellier and c) hire cars have suddenly gone ridiculously expensive in Spain! We left early so that we had chance to visit another of his brothers in Lewes and duly arrived at the ferry port, Newhaven. Uneventful crossing – it was just so nice being back on a ferry! Watched the sunset over the sea just before we docked at Dieppe where we drove to Ibis Budget Hotel (secure parking with hotel if booked 10 Euros) 124611 -124808 197miles Thursday 15th September 2022 Left hotel and had uneventful drive to Bonneval where we parked up outside ... read more

Quite sad to leave our lovely site at Limeuil as we have really enjoyed our stay there. Found out later than the 2022 ACSI inspection has awarded them the best located site again and that is no surprise is it really is in a wonderful spot. Across the bridge from a beautiful village, access to two mighty rivers, the Vezere and the Dordogne and close to so many of the gorgeous villages of the Perigord region. Our drive was exceedingly scenic though the first part to get us out of the river valley was somewhat windy. Once away from there though we were on good, nearly always straight roads through lovely scenery. The further along we went the more scenic the route as we climbed up and over the Massif Central range with wonderful views across ... read more

I am standing alone on the top of d'Arguilhe. I can see 360 degrees all round and it is a long way down . 368 steps I think that wind their way around the Puy. The ancient remains of a volcanic plug. One of a number in the immediate area . In fact, I can see another two of them as I look around . One has a statue of red sandstone the Notre Dame de France . The furthest away is an abbey of some description . Each seems to want to outdo the other . I am supposedly near to the angels up here on top. Angels who will look after me, sing to me and care for me especially if I have crawled up the steps on my knees. I am supposed to ... read more

Today we visited. Puy de Dome, we travelled up on an electric train to a height of 1463M (4769ft). There was snow and the views were incredible. Then drove through the National Park to La Bourboule and up to Le Mont Dore. Up in the Ski Lift to the Puy de Sancy 1886M (6195ft). Beautiful, lots of snow and bright sunshine. On our return to the bottom of the lift we walked up to the source of the Dordogne - a babbling stream !!! We returned to Royat and viewed the extinct volcanoes Les Roche Tuillere and the Sanadore - spectacular. This is truly, an interesting area.... read more

We left Saint Mere Eglise Friday and travelled down to Le Mans for an overnight stop. Long tow to Royat near Clermon Ferrand on Saturday, set up and it snowed ! Central heating was not working also had a bit of a chilly evening. Sunday - Only 3C today but managed to fix the caravan central heating. The tow up to Royat yesterday was somewhat complicated through very narrow village roads as the main road was “route barree” still we arrived on site with a bit of unexpected snow.... read more

Tuesday 16th April Today we left the Alps and travelled west across the Rhône and into the centre of France – the mountains of Le Massif Central. It was interesting to watch the scenery changing. Now we have old volcanoes as the mountains – rounded, not as high, eroded. It is still easy to see the shapes of the old volcanic cones. Many of the higher parts are still covered with snow. Pine forests and fast mountain streams, endless hills with the roads winding between, meadows and dark stone buildings are all features. It is very pretty, even though the spring has not yet sprouted the new leaves on the deciduous trees – the snow has only recently melted away from the meadows, and persists in shaded parts of the higher farms, as well as on ... read more

After an amazing 5 course Basque dinner, I'm amazed that we were able to make the walk. What an amazing meal (pictures to follow). Ruth decided this morning that she would rather ride with Pat than walk with us. Of course our feelings were greatly hurt and we didn't quite understand but decided to just let it go. The walk today was truly one of the highlights of the trip! Perfect weather ... 13 at the start (brrr) ... but the sun came out and it was perfect. The scenery was stunning without all the dead corn and sun flowers but quaint little hamlets with perfectly maintained Basque homes (we learned that the Basque people tend to be more conscientious about the maintenance of their properties than the rest of France). The new addition was the ... read more

Here we are .... one stop from St Jean Pied de Port.. I have a little battery power left on the laptop and some notes from the last few days so here it is. Tiff sez ... All of our accommodations come with a private bathroom. It's a good thing because it takes us half a day to figure out how to flush the toilet and turn on the shower. Often the shower head is on the end of a coil. I forget to grab it before turning on the water once it immediately uncoiled drenching me and the entire bathroom. We try to wash our clothes in the sink which may or may not hold water. Can you get carpal tunnel from wringing out wet clothes? And I certainly could have gone all the trip ... read more

I am really behind for a number of reasons. First I was dealing with 4 30+K hikes back to beck and I was tired. I did take a van one of the days. Second ... and more importantly ... the internet connections have been miserable. Third my computer screen is cracked ... don't know how but I can not touch the screen without losing the keyboard and the battery is low and won't charge fast. Excuses ... excuses but here's the lowdown on what's been happening. We arrived in Nogaro and they were having car races and fast and fancy cars all over the place. I'll post a picture of that Tiff is asking Santa to send her for Christmas. Even with all this action on a Saturday night the town was as dead as Sun ... read more

This is another combo post. Rich and Tiff arrived after a long 35K walk to find the rooms had been reserved but not paid. Some frantic calls to Denis fixed the problem but it wa touch and go for a while. The most interesting thing about the trek from Condom to Eauze turned out to be the walnut tree that decided to bomb Tiff. Hit her right in the hairline and was a real shock. The rest of the trip was more dried up corn and sunflower fields ... some were being cut and some being plowed but that's been the scenery for the majority of the walk. The dinner in Eauze featured the best duck that Rich and Tiff had eaten on the entire trip. Tiff had the leg and Rich had the breast that ... read more
