We had such a great time in Moissac but it was time to hit the trail again. The day after Moissac we had the option of 19K fairly flat (except for the end) or 21K not so flat. To convince Ruth and Pat to hike with us (how's that for an excuse) we took the flat route. What a great choice that turned out to be. The first part (the flat part) was on the Garonne Canal. The canal was started in the 19th century as part of a bigger effort to connect the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. The canal features 53 locks that are still functioning. The canal was abandoned for commercial use because of easier and cheaper ways of moving goods. Tiff sez ... Pat's favorite walking day - almost flat and paved. Also ... read more

I'm a couple of days behind ... We're on our rest day in Moissac so it's time to catch up. I was finally able to hike yesterday and we had a moderate 26k jaunt that Tiff and I did while Pat and Ruth wimped out and only did about half. It's OK though cuz Tiff and I had a nice day together. Tiff sez ... day before yesterday ... Last night's entertainment was Pat trying to seduce Tiffany's new German friend Claus (you had to be there). Since we all walked today, Tif gave Ruth one of her hiking polles so she's no longer "bi-poler". We did only 10 miles today ... never thought we would saying ONLY 10 miles. Yesterday.... You know how Marsha (Tiffany) likes to change names. She has changed the "Le Puy ... read more

We leave Moissac tomorrow morning. I hope that we can beat the heat since it's been in the 30s. We got kicked out of the first room at the hotel this morning and had to move to a suite. We had an espresso machine (it ground the beans and everything) 2 balconies and this really strange shower with jets all over the inside. I had a hard time getting it to work. Had another great meal with duck and chicken (I have never eaten so much duck!) and generally enjoyed Moissac. I did have a bit of concern ... I was chewing the duck and all of a sudden had something really hard that I almost chewed ... I lost a crown so no more beer until I get that one fixed. Tiff sez ... The ... read more

Today Rich did 12k in preparation for tomorrow's 14k leg. All went well so it will be walking for Rich for the duration ... hopefully. Had a great hamburger for dinner last night with our new friend Klaus. Tif sez ... We are now half way done - 225 miles (and of course Tiff has walked it all). We are basically walking in the same direction so one half of my body is quite tan (I need to walk backwards on the last half of the trip to even things out). The 10 euro trip between stops on the shuttle stops here ... the trip today was 50 euros shared by Pat, Ruth and Rich. Looks like Tiffany will start having company on the trails from now on. Tiff did meet a new friend Klaus from ... read more

Tiff was off on a 30+km adventure yesterday and Rich was able to meet her on the downhill coming into Cahors. Tiff sez ... "Deja vu" is an expression coined by a Le Puy hiker who just did the last 3 days of trails. Even for city slickers the novelty of country landscape is growing thin. By this time on the trip I thought my view would be mostly Rich's derriere (see how French is just rolling of my toungue!). Actually, Rich was able to escort me the last 4km into town so he's getting better. YIPPEE! So after the 30+km day today, we have a 14km day and then the rest day which I'm sure that we need to regroup, do some laundry, and just generally unwind. Rich is really looking forward to walking the ... read more

I've had trouble charging the computer but that problem is resolved (I hope!) These are the daily posts from Tiff ... I'll add some pictures in a separate post when I get them sorted. The 9th I still can't get over last night's accommodations which were like a palace. Bathroom even had a claw-foot tub for 2 (need I say more?) Today Pat's bladder (on her pack) sprung a leak and dripped down the back of her pants. We heard about it from other hikers in at least 4 different languages. She probably shouldn't have responded oui oui! Got lost finding tonight's hotel again but were helped by some real eye-candy policemen. Pat pleaded for them to arrest her (I really hope they don't understand English!) The 10th I had a hard time keeping up with ... read more

A bit of angst today wondering if we were going to get transportation but it finally worked out. Rich and Pat transported while Tiff and Ruth braved the trail. Tiff sez ... Iagine using a stairmaster at its hardest level for an hour and that was the beginning of our hike today. UGH! Then everything was great until we purposely got off the trail to find our accommodations. Our instructions called our hotel a "hidden gem" with the operative word "HIDDEN". We ended up asking eight people for directions! I'm sure French teachers are cringing but hey, I tried. Well, it turned out to be a real gem too as you can see below. I feel like a princess. We'll sleep well tonight.... read more

Rich had a nice chat with his Aussie friend Leah until she took off to meet her husband Michael and hten had a nice ride to Conques. He did see Tiff and the SWs about an hour and a half out but missed their entry into the town because he thought they were coming in the same direction he did. Oh well ... the beer and people watching was fun.Conques is a beautiful little tourist trap dating back to the 10th century with the original cobblestone streets and beautiful churche s. None of it was obviously bombed in the wars since there was nothing of strategic importance. Many people will call this the end of a Camino stage but we'll charge forward. Our Aussie friends gave us a tube of Voltaren so Tiff is not "wobbling" ... read more

As I mentioned yesterday, Rich and the 2 sister wives took the bus and Tiff made the 33KM trek to Golhinac. She went charging out of the hotel at 7:30 and arrived at the hotel at 5:30. Way to go Tiff! She sez ... I hiked almost 23 miles by myself today. It's comforting to know that I enjoy my company even if nobody else does. Actually I was joined by 2 dogs on the last 7 miles. I named them Ruth and Pat and told them all about the book I'm reading. I realized that I was following the dogs and not paying attention to the trail signs and panicked. I didn't know if I was going to end up in the hotel or a kennel. I bet on the dogs because whoever did the ... read more

Someone once said that the "Rain in Spain falls mainly in the plain" and whatever that has to do with a trip in France is a mystery but Tiff and Ruth embarked on a 16 KM quest to find out. There was not much rain really but Tiff got to wear her floral pink poncho and she and Ruth posed with (probably) St Roch as he was on his pilgrimage. Except for today the weather has been perfect and the temperature has been about the same as Tiff's age (you do the math). Tiff is getting a massage tonight ... strictly for research of course! Skies should clear for the 32 KM trek tomorrow that Tiffany will do solo ... I can't and the sister wives chickened out.... read more
