What better way to start a Danish adventure then with a six hour bus ride from Hamburg to Copenhagen (also included a 45min ferry trip across the sea!) The German autobahn on a good day can be challenging but on a day like today cars, trucks and the bus alike spent more time slipping and drifting then driving with haste. A dangerous trip when the roads are covered in dirt and snow, with more snow falling by the minute.
Arriving here in Copenhagen one thinks of fairytales and kings and queens, where Vikings once roamed and of Carlsberg beer. It is that and much more!
The icy Scandinavian cold winds blew through the city all day, with the temperature dropping often into the minuses and giving us a new blanket of snow fall. This adventure called for hats, mittens, scarves and that warm winter snow jacket which has still has not found its way to the back of the cupboard for another year.
Being a city more on the smaller scale Copenhagen is quiet easy to enjoy the sites the city offers by foot. Setting off on into the city centre there are several churches one can visit
or if it is universities you are interested they have that too, along with the old observation tower which belonged to the university before it became a tourist destination and exhibition space. Copenhagen is also home to the world’s longest shopping street
Strøget, stretching 3.2km long. One can spend hours here indulging in both Scandinavian and European fashion. Making your way across town you can see the current residency of the queen and royal family. On the hour tourists flock to see the changing of the guards, and for those lucky enough you can follow the 12pm change of the guard’s procession through the city before they take their positions protecting the palace. Only minutes down the road you can also see the Russian mosque, with its golden steeples visible from the royal palace. Moving out of the city centre you can find yourself at the old summer house of the royal family, which still has much of the old royal furniture inside including the thrones, and in the treasury crown royal jewels including crowns worn by the kings and queens of the time, rings fitted with large emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds, encrusted swords and guns as well has a large collection of old wines.
For those more interested in the tales of Hans Christian Anderson, you can take a walk through the military gardens and then find yourself on in the harbour area. It is here where the Little Mermaid (gift given by Carlsberg family) sits on her rock awaiting the tours in rain, hail or shine. Only 150meters further down you can also see a much larger statue of a Mermaid and polar bears. Christiania town – is one of the biggest if not the biggest tourist site in Copenhagen. This Free State within a state draws hundreds of tourists a day. The population of Christiania were successfully able to separate themselves from Copenhagen and operate as their own state, with their own currency. Tourists are allowed to walk through town, ad are strongly advised not to take pictures within Christiania town, and it is forbidden to take pictures down the main street, which is heavily signed and warns visitors not to break the rules. No tour of a European city is ever complete without visiting a local brewery! Carlsberg is the 4th largest brewery in the world and holds the record for the largest collection of bottled beers in the world over 16,500. This tour is a self guided tour which takes you thought the draught horse stables, and the history of use of draught horses and also has a Ferrier on site who changes the horses shoes before beer enthusiasts. You then pass through the outdoors bar and beer bottle collection to try an ice cold Carlsberg beer, before moving forward to the brewing process. The final destination is upstairs in the bar/chill out lounge, where again one can try several different types of taps beers!
