I guess Nancy and I are toast ... in theory anyway. We were working on the second floor moving books in the stacks and noticed a fire alarm was going off. Of course we ignored it. After all yesterday workmen were testing the alarms, so why should today be different. The alarm sounded for ten minutes or so when we heard footsteps on the stairs. Honza came in saying, “Go outside. This is a serious fire drill.” I was not sure how to interpret “serious fire drill.” Did this mean there was a fire? That would be serious. Or did he mean this was a real fire drill? The latter was the case. We followed Honza outside to the parking lot. Well, as you probably can guess, we were the last out of the buildings. As soon as she finished breakfast Nancy headed to the nearest grocery store to buy a bunch of Actimel. We will keep one package for ourselves and give the rest for use by the sick CAT students. Actimel has the beneficial bacteria needed to recolonize the lower gut after flu like diseases or food poisoning, heavy antibiotic use, etc. I made the world’s record time in going and getting back. I left the room at 8:05 got to the bus stop by 8:14 (even with stopping to buy a bus ticket at Reception) and rode to the stop at the grocery store. I zipped up the hill, went straight to the bananas, weighted them correctly so the clerk would not have to look disgusted at me this time, then got 9 packs of Actimel. The lady ... read more

“I think I’m getting sick,” Chris said when we saw him this morning. When we returned to our room after working in the library this evening Chris was in bed with a terrible headache and a temperature of almost 104. Unfortunately he was right this morning when he said, “I think I am getting sick.” Nurse Nancy is trying to take care of sick people on our hallway. I believe everyone on our hallway, except Nancy, either has been or is sick with flu. The real campus nurse says she knows exactly how Chris is feeling as that is exactly the state she was in last week. The flu bug is laying this campus low. Classes, reviews for exams and examinations are all having to be rescheduled. No one has any idea where this bug came ... read more

Dave Thompson what kind of tree is this? It looks just like an evergreen (conifer) tree. It has the right shape and it bears cones. But it is naked in the winter and not green at all. Sunday while we were walking through the snow we ran across a cluster of trees. They looked like dead evergreens, but there was something about them that gave them the look of being alive. The limbs were totally bare, but they had a green hue to them. Also there were small cones that looked like this years cones. I broke a twig from one tree and it was green inside. “These trees are alive,” I said, “what are they.” “I don’t know,” Nancy replied, “I don’t know of any evergreen that drops it needles each year.” Is there a ... read more

See what a good nurse I am? Bill was back to 98.6 this a.m. and he was able to eat a breakfast of cornflakes with Actimel instead of milk, a slice of bread with jelly, coffee and juice Chris, who shares a room with Dejan, joined us this morning at breakfast. “How is Dejan?” Nancy asked. “He’s really sick,” Chris said. “But I am fine.” Soon we were joined by a young man from Italy. I do not know his name. He is here studying on a short term basis and will return soon to Southern Italy to begin his work as the pastor of a church there. He is a quiet person and this morning was quieter than normal. He became sick during the night, but had come to the dining hall to eat breakfast. ... read more

Friday March 4, 2005 There is a bug going around the seminary making lots of people sick with a stomach flu. Dejan Adam, our neighbor across the hall, is sick and Agnes, who lives on our hallway, is also sick. Agnes has really been sick all week. Dejan’s fiancee is coming to visit in two weeks and he has two papers he says, “I have to finish before she gets here. So, I will stay in my bed tomorrow and work on my papers.” Nancy has been editing his work. Today which is Sunday he is REALLY sick and it appears doubtful Dailey his Fiancee can really come. If he had gone to bed and rested, he probably wouldn’t be so ill. No one seems to take my advice to sleep, drink a lot of beverages ... read more

We see TV advertisements here attempting to attract tourists to areas and places we never see advertised in the States. There have been beautiful ads for Greece, Egypt and the Maldives since we arrived in January. Today, for the first time, I saw an ad for Crotia. The ad was built around theme “Come to Crotia where the Mediterranean is the way it used to be.” I expect we will see ads beginning for other areas of Europe as spring arrives. The Canary Islands are a popular place to visit in the winter. Several families here at the seminary vacationed there in February. No special visas are required and it is warm and sunny there. Warm and sunny are two words that sound very good just now as Europe is gripped in the coldest weather in ... read more

This morning I feel I could rub some of them on my skin and be glad. It is -18 C here today. In Spain it is -24 C this morning and in Bavaria it is -45C. These are the coldest ever temps in some parts of Europe. Portugal set a 64 year record last night. 18 days till Spring but it is the coldest part of the winter for almost all of Europe. I’m glad I love cold weather! It’s 6:25 in the evening and it just got dark a little bit ago. When we first arrived here, there was total darkness a little before 5 if I remember correctly. Since we are much farther north than our home in Maryland, we will experience much longer days as spring and summer arrive. I don’t know how ... read more

Our typical weekday is to get up about six-thirty and be ready for breakfast by seven-thirty. During that hour, as we get ready have the TV on to either CNN or BBC. The most important news for us is “how cold will it be today?” The cold air mass seems to have settled over the area, determined to stay as long as possible. After breakfast we go to chapel at nine and then to the library to start work. Most days we are scheduled to cover the circulation desk for a period of time. Sometimes only thirty minutes while someone eats their lunch. At other times we are scheduled to cover the circulation desk for several hours. There is a computer at the circulation desk. When there are no students or faculty members requiring our attention, ... read more

Everyone on the campus was sad today as a greatly loved student, Sashi, completed his studies and left today for his home in far away Nagaland. One of our friends said she cried over the weekend every time she thought about Sashi being gone. Nagaland is a territory of a number of indigenous tribes that straddles the borders of India and Burma. Sashi lives on the Indian side of the border and is a staff member of the Oriental Theological Seminary there. He told me they have about fifty students. Nancy and I got to know Sashi through his work in the library repairing older, damaged books and preparing new books for placement on the shelves. Sashi had a quick smile, was extremely friendly, was always willing to help others. He loved people here and people ... read more
