This city of Prague (Praha) seems to rival others in terms of the immense expanse of glorious ancient beauty in architecture, influenced by countless dynasties, rivalries, war and change. Fortunately it is all there before us to see, feel and enjoy. The old city and the area surrounding the great castle across the river just ooze with history. Just walking the Charles Bridge over the Vltava River (built by King Charles iv, starting 1357) after leaving the castle, says it all, baroque-style statue after statue (replicas now), depicting important parts of the city history. I found it very difficult to absorb it all and settled for simply enjoying the ambience of this magnificent city which was so intertwined with religious conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and her Protestant challengers centuries ago. Now the Church's influence ... read more

Yesterday's task specific functional trek was the toughest yet. The distance wasn't a big deal, but the 90 + degree weather was hotter than we have experienced to date, and much of the 22 km we walked required crossing steep ridges and valleys. Despite our sore quads today, the end was well worth the effort as we enjoyed a delightful visit to Svaty Jan Pod Skalou (St John Under the Cliff). We took a train to Karlstein, and from there walked through the forest across a number of steep ridges and gullies til we ended up at this amazing church and tiny hamlet nestled in a valley between sheer cliffs on 3 sides with a beautiful mountain stream running alongside. The history of the church dates back to the 7th century when a hermit monk, Ivan, ... read more

The second leg of our quest-trek during summer 2015 focuses on teaching at Anglo-American University i(AAU) n Prague, Czech Republic and continuing our Camino training schedule. This is the 8th year we have come to Prague to teach at AAU, and the 14th time we have visited this beautiful city. Every time we come we discover something new, and we expect the same this year. We have rented a terrific apartment about a 20 minute walk from campus (or 2-stop tram ride for those rainy days) that is conveniently located between 2 huge parks. This makes for easy early pre-breakfast training walks as we have enjoyed exploring these lovely parks along with the other areas around Prague with which we are already familiar. AAU has recently moved into a newly restored castle built originally in the ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205On the way to Cesky Krumlov from Bratislava we were fortunate to find our way to the Brno Autodrome which regularly hosts Moto GP and World Superbike events. Just as we arrived a club ride day track session was getting started so we had a bit of fun watching the bikes take to the circuit at great speed.. A stroke of luck in a trip that does not always run as smoothly as we would like it to. Booking an apartment in the middle of the old town of Cesky Krumlov seemed like a good idea at the time. However the only road in was right through the middle of a small cobbled town square and over an extremely narrow bridge. I really don't know how we managed to arrive without hitting a pedestrian. ... read more

My third stop of my travels was Prague. Getting to Prague proved interesting as the trains in Germany were on strike so I had to take a bus to the border where I then got on a train to Prague. After that little bit of excitement, I made it to Prague and got off at the wrong train station. Not to worry though, the metro ran to this station as well so I was able to make it to my hostel without enduring an extra cost or much of an inconvenience. Once I made it to my hostel and checked in, I went on my customary walk of the city to try and get my bearings. My walk took me across the famous and beautiful Charles Bridge and into the Old Town. Prague being the medieval ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205We caught an early morning flight from Stuttgart to Hamburg, Germany, with a two hour layover, then another flight to Prague. We arrived there by noon. We boarded a train and then a bus to the city center where we had rented an apartment with friends, Gary and Sally. Luckily we ran into them coming out of the apartment since we knew the address but not the apartment number. After settling in we ventured into the city center to see the sights. Everything we wished to see was within walking distance of our apartment so there was no need for public transportation. Our apartment was half a block from the main city square. We began our exploration of Prague at Wenceslas Square. It's the major square in Prague where much of the action occurs. There ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205I think I have adjusted to the difference between Greece & Czech Republic. Greece is brash in its beauty. The scenery can be awe inspiring and a large majority of the young women have a unique beauty which they wear so well. And some of the men just make you weak at the knees! In the Czech Republic the beauty is more subtle and sometimes partly hidden. The women can be handsome and chic. The men occasionally the same but not so much. The scenery is pretty and the villages quaint. As you drive the motorway the landscape is mostly flat with rolling hills in the distance. You see nothing but vivid green broken by the occasional yellow of the canola fields and the terracotta of the village rooftops. A tall spired church or town ... read more

Hi Everyone, Week 16 was in Prague for the World Hockey Championships. We got to watch the semi-final of USA vs Russia in the stadium, plus Canada vs Czech from outside in the fan zone There were thousands of Russians turned out to support their team, and it was great fun to start a Canadian chant only to have a hundred people chant back. Too bad for Russia that Canada beat them 6-1 in the finals :D Otherwise, Prague is a great example of a Medieval city. If you're not going to many European cities, it's a good place to start. I've you've been around Europe before, it might be a pass. Cheers, Joel... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today I had a very leisure day, I started by taking the metro out to the Church of the Sacred Heart at the outskirts of the city. It's a nice church with a unique construction and next to it there is a small image series dedicated to the Prague Uprising during World War II. Close to the church is the Zizkov Television Tower which also has a pretty unique construction, neither of these two are by any means a must visit but if you have the time to spare while you're here it's not to bad to take a look at. Afterwards I returned to the centre of Prague and made my way over to the Convent of Saint Agnes but it only seemed to be some kind of art exhibition there ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This morning I returned to Prague after two wonderful days in Bratislava, just as on my trip between Prague and Bratislava I was fortunate enough to get some good company on the way. This time in form of a Canadian girl studying in Holland. We chatted about travelling and life and all things imaginable. It's always nice to meet other travellers on the road and exchange experiences. When I arrived back in Prague I didn't really have that much to do or see left after my initial days and I instead just turned to aimlessly walking around. I came upon the New Town Hall which is quite nice but not nearly as nice as the Old Town Hall as well as the Church of Saint Ludmila which I can definitely recommend. I ... read more
