Prague was a beautiful European city. They have a famous astronomical clock and one of the most beautiful bridges I have ever seen. While there we did a walking tour and went for a beer tour/ pub crawl. From what we were told Prague is the beer capital of the world.... read more

Day 213 Thursday 18th August 2016 – Dresden to Prague Woke up kicking ourselves for not planning more days in Dresden as there was so much more we wanted to see and we both actually need to shop for more clothes. After this many days on the road most of what we are carrying is turning into rags and I think people are starting to mistake us for tramps. We sprang (fell) out of bed at 7.30 and walked a block away to a supermarket that had a small café inside and picked up a bread roll and a take away coffee for breakfast. Got a taxi ride to the bus station without any hassles and waited for our bus. The Dresden bus station isn’t a bus station as such but just a series ... read more

We woke to another beautiful day with bright sunshine. After breakfast we met Soma in the lobby for a walking tour to Lesser Town. We walked down cobblestone streets past shops and restaurants and stopped once again at the Powder Tower which was used to store gunpowder in the 17th century. It is one of the original city gates dating back to the 11th century. It separates Old Town from New Town. Our destination was the Charles Bridge which crosses the Vitava River, but on the way, we stopped while Soma explained the different types of architecture of some of the buildings, we passed opera houses, shops, coffee shops, museums and were given tips on places to enjoy a view, a snack, or a meal. We reached the Charles Bridge and it was already bustling with ... read more

Today after breakfast in the hotel, we met our local tour guide, Renata, promptly at 8:30 to begin our morning tour of the City of Prague. First stop was at the Prague Castle, which is said to be the largest ancient castle in the world. It dates from the 9th century and is the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic. St. Vitus Cathedral is one of the buildings of this complex which dominates the skyline. The inside of the cathedral was beautiful. This was more of an orientation tour giving us information should we want to go into the castle at a later time and a more in depth visit to the cathedral. We boarded the bus again and marveled at the long, long lines waiting to get in. Renata said they instituted ... read more

Yesterday we had a leisurely day getting ready for our long-awaited Danube River Cruise. We didn't have to be at the airport until 5:00 p.m. so we even had a chance to watch a Netflix movie. Of course we would try to fit one more movie in. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare, had something to eat before boarding our flight to Amsterdam where we then transferred to our flight to Prague. All in all I didn't think the flight seemed overly long--I was even able to sleep a few hours. We arrived in Prague about 1:30 p.m. and met our Gate 1 City Tour Guide where she promptly loaded us into a van that took us to the Hotel Imperial where we met the tour director for Gate 1, Soma ... read more

Today we took a tram ride to Wenceslas Square. It is a vibrant area of hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. There are also banks and local and international shops. It is the entertainment and nightlife centre of Prague, and the main shopping and commercial district begins here. Wenceslas Square lies at the heart of the New Town - the word new is misleading though, as ... read more

As expected we wake to 15C and rain. So it is off up the hill to Prague Castle, walking gingerly on the shiny damp cobblestones. The tourist groups are here early, especially our friends from the PRC in groups of 50 or so, always keen not to lose contact with their comrades so they tend to move as one fluid mass. The pouring rain stops the use of the selfie sticks though which is something. We join the queue for the cathedral which looks interminable but in fact moves quite quickly. The cathedral was begun in 1338 but not consecrated until 1929, which left us a little unclear as to what happened in the intervening 600 years! Maybe the numerous side chapels were consecrated. Anyway, some of the reliquary and side chapels are very impressive, especially ... read more

Today, refreshed from a good night's sleep, we explored Old Town with our guide Sean. Not a czech name you say. You're right, he is an American who has been living in Prague for the last 2 years to finish his masters degree in Central Europeen Studies. As with all tours they take you to the major sights and tell you the history. I never remember the historical facts but I do remember the stories and legends, and Sean told us quite a few. One of the must see attraction is the Astronomical Clock. The clock is a 600-year-old marvel of medieval engineering. The clock is mounted on the southern wall of Old Town Hall in the Old Town Square. The clock mechanism itself is composed of three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position ... read more

7am we head down to the Charles Bridge to take some photos in the early morning light and without the tourist hordes (we are not tourists, we are travellers, it is different). It is already hot but the area is still quiet. A few more people appear on the bridge, including the bizarre sight of a Mainland Chinese couple with a photographer taking photos of them, both in their wedding clothes. It is common Mainland practice to have your wedding photo taken on a different day and in a different place to your wedding, but it’s impressive to find a couple travelling this far. After breakfast, we get an Uber to Josefov, the old Jewish quarter in Prague. The ‘museum’ covers several synagogues, most now converted to museums, and the old Jewish cemetery. The most moving ... read more
