This morning we were off to Prague with a 7:20am flight meaning our taxi from Paris pick-up time was 5:30am. An early wake-up call! It was only an 1.5 hour flight to Prague. We were able to check into our hotel right away and since we were both feeling pretty darn tired; we took a nice nap. It was much needed and refreshing. Now honestly, I will tell you on the drive to the hotel, our walk to the metro, and our first few streets of walking after we got off the metro, were not giving me the “I love this place” feeling. But, as soon as we made it into the old town and began wandering down some of the smaller streets, the love began. It is really beautiful here and has a different look ... read more

It's been SOOOOO cold! And today is supposed to be a MAXIMUM of (brrrr....) minus 12! Fortunately, a bit of snow here and there, and the Christmas - New Year festivities have distracted us from the fact that it is dark at 4pm! We got our first snow late November, and despite forecasts of a white Christmas it was not to be. Even so, Christmas in Prague is beautiful. Christmas Day was an American-Australian affair (Dan, Eliza & Michelle; then Barry, Sarah & us). What that means is we had a big 7kg Turkey with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, but also had bon-bons and a game of cricket in the street. Then just after new years, the snow set in for a week, leaving Prague looking incredible. I don't care what my American friends say; ... read more

What a trip! Prague is the most beautiful city I have ever seen, in terms of its archetecture. The castles were amazing and the Opera House was unforgetable. We spent three days there and stayed at a pretty affordable ex-Comunist apartment. You had to light the stove with a lighter and the bathroom had an old fashioned water heater, in which you needed to manually turn the gas on. The Turkish cousins proudly said they were used to these conditions. The only thing I was afraid of was the elevator but I just avoided it. The Opera we saw was Tosca and it was fantastic. The opera was small enough so we had a great view. The city itself had many things to offer. The food was good and was famous for the goulash. The beer ... read more

View Prague from the 'Eiffel Tower' on Petrin Hill The Prague Hotel Toovey has now been open for 18 months, and after a slowish 2007, the No Vacancy sign was permanently lit all summer. At one point Steph calculated in between Feb and mid July we had been without guests 37 days! (And 2 weeks of that we were away in Egypt and Morocco!) Before summer started we had Glen (Anth's bro) in February and Steph's mum in March/April. Then Michelle, Scott and Chloe (Steph's sis, bro-in-law and beautiful niece) came for 2 months over May-June. Anth's mum, dad and sister Kim for 3 weeks in July, followed by Steph's dad for 3 weeks in August. (We also fitted in our sister-in-law's parents for 3 days.) And it was great seeing our families, even if we ... read more

I was about to start this blog with an apology that we haven't blogged all winter (I felt so neglectful) but then it dawned that pretty much no-one had actually commented (or noticed?) the lack of blogs. Or maybe you had noticed, but were still in the denial stage - in which case of course you wouldn't have complained about the lack of blogs because complaining would be acknowledging, which kind of goes against the whole point of a denial stage doesn't it? OK, probs not. Maybe you were just enjoying some blog-respite while getting some sun and watching the cricket... Whatever the reason you haven't commented on the long blogless European winter we've chosen to ignore this and blog-on. And since summer is nearly over in Australia and the mercury is about to start heading ... read more

It's official. We totally love Prague in Summer (and I'll throw most of the shoulder seasons into that!) Don't know whether it is the energy that comes from sun and green after so much cold and brown, or all the excitement of discovering we can drive to about 7 countries in the time it used to take us to Albury but we were feeing good! And while we did do a lot of travelling (see other blogs), day to day life in Prague made an awesome filler in between. Between April and September we visited England, Denmark, France, Norway, Latvia and Croatia (including Slovenia and Bosnia). All of them individually fun in different ways, but mostly it was cool to experience so many different cultures and environments in a geographical area not too dissimilar to Australia. ... read more

Happy (belated) Easter everyone. So after way too long in a hotel room we are finally in our house. Like everything else in this country, rent is cheaper than Australia which probably means this is the nicest place we will ever live - a slightly depressing thought. From the bedroom we've got an amazing view of Charles Bridge (Karlov Most in Czech) which is much prettier now it's spring and the trees are green and the sky occasionally blue. However if the trees are bare we get a view of Prague Castle out the lounge room window! What's really cool is often there's fireworks over the bridge and we can sit on our bed and watch it. I should also mention the spare bedroom has the same view, so if you're planning a trip to Europe... ... read more
